Winter is Here Write Tag!

GUESS WHAT!?!?? I started writing my WIP!!!

As you know, a few weeks ago, I was knee-deep in the researching and outlining process. Then life came along and whacked me in the face (#adulting), and I did NO work on my WIP at all for two whole weeks. I didn’t type a word, I didn’t open the document, I didn’t even think about it.

Then things settled down a bit, and I took a look at my novel and thought that I probably have lots more plotting and researching to do.

But instead…

I decided to START WRITING!

This outlining thing? I tried :’)

Anyway, I love coming back to writing after a while. It’s kind of like eating a bite of chocolate cake again after not eating any chocolate for a long long time.

Beauty!

I want to thank Beth @ Reading Every Night for tagging me! Beth is so sweet and she has an amazing blog – please do check it out if you haven’t already!

Also, credits to Kat @ Life and Other Disasters for creating this awesome tag.

Rules:

The Quick & Dirty:

Meredith_Rio_Edene

Meredith, Rio, and Edene are detectives at the Deviant Investigation Unit. They are responsible for investigating strange deaths in the city of Toronto.

Zenith_CarmenIt’s hard to be the only teenager on the Unit. On an online forum, Meredith meets fifteen-year-old Zenith, who is nice, funny, and seems to understand her though they never met in real life. Zenith lives with his mom, Carmen.

Which protagonist is most likely to break into Christmas song first?
Bonus: What song?

8ef8f42b6ed7be04e83aeb870d3cd222.jpg

As a single mother, Carmen finds it hard to make ends meet, even when she works 12-hour shifts as a nurse in a prestigious hospital. She comes home exhausted every day. It doesn’t help that Zenith started to wear black clothes and a lip ring.

However, every year in December, when snow coats the streets, when colourful lights illuminate store windows, when Christmas songs play on the radio, it is like magic. She can’t help but sing along, especially when it is Feliz Navidad.

It’s the first snow of the season, who would immediately book a ticket to a hot beach location?

4a55b02b7f5a6e6d504f7eb90be095c1

Rio dreams of living in Orlando… or San Francisco. Yes, San Francisco. He’s always thought of himself as a California type of guy. Too bad that the DIU can’t afford to send anyone on business trips across the continent. Maybe he will tag along with his brother (who happens to be a millionaire) on his next conference trip.

Which character believed in Santa (or a mystical equivalent) for the longest time?

There are a few things in life that Zenith counted on. Not his dad, first of all (that bastard.) Or his so-called friends (there are no such things in high school.) But he can count on Santa Claus, because every single Christmas morning, there is a gift for him underneath the fake Christmas tree at the corner of their apartment.

He has no clue how Santa gets there though, because they don’t have a chimney, but never mind that.

Who is most likely to build a blanket fort and go into hibernation with books, Netflix and tea/hot cocoa/coffee?

49fa1b66199c773b91ab8f4580b0f55d.jpg

Meredith loves her coffee, and she’d take books and Netflix any day, rather than talking to actual, living, breathing people. Other than Edene, and Rio. And maybe Zenith (then again if they ever meet in person she would be horribly nervous so maybe not.)

Who would be the first to start a snowball fight and then get really competitive about it?

a5feb37ec17fab7daebaf0bd34e6e6fc

Rio values a good joke over things like money and status (there is a reason why he isn’t the millionaire in his family.) As much as he dreams about California, he can’t wait to throw a snowball at Edene (who is way too uptight) and Meredith (who really needs to lighten up.)

And Meredith can’t just take it. She needs to show Rio that she’s the best snowball-thrower there is.

Who buys their Christmas presents super last minute?

Despite being on his resume, organization and time management are not Rio’s strong traits.

There’s a local snowman competition, who would be the best sculptor? What would they build?

366657301952377e6b872dc25e9d8e7b

In another life, if Edene hadn’t decided to go into law enforcement, she might’ve been an artist. She would build an abstract piece that symbolizes love, harmony, and the joy of Christmas.

If someone were to organize a Secret Santa event, who would it be?

Edene doesn’t hold a title like Manager or Director, but she is proud of her (unofficial) status as the Social Director at the Unit. After all, if she doesn’t organize the yearly Secret Santa at her workplace, who will?

Someone refuses to leave the house unless strictly necessary because of the cold. Who is it?

Meredith. It’s not worth it.

Who puts style before comfort and would rather freeze in fashionable clothes than be warm but not on trend?
Bonus: Add a winter aesthetic for the character!

Edene_fashion.jpg

Edene’s personal philosophy is to dress to impress. To be confident on the inside, you gotta dress the part on the outside. Never mind that she is in her thirties (and, her mother reminds her, still single). A woman can look and feel beautiful at any age. And you don’t need a man to tell you that.

What do you love about Christmas? Do you have a favourite Christmas song? Any Secret Santa plans this year? Do you like snow!?

For the writers out there: Do you outline your stories? If you do, how much detail do you go to in your outlines? (Every chapter? Every scene? Or just the general gist of the plot?)

hi Sophie! merry Christmas ❤ I never ever outline my stories. Once I did, but as I write it's so altered, that now i just flow and create the story as it unfolds ❤ wonderful post!!! I remember this style is called something, but I can't remember what

    1. Hi Malanie! I feel the same way about outlines! Although I enjoy the outlining process, I find that my story changes as it progresses anyway.

  3. Ahhh it’s so amazing that you started writing your WIP, Sophie! You have done so much writing the past few months while I’ve been doing absolutely nothing, I feel so, so bad about it now hahaha. ANYWAY that’s not about me, I am SO happy you’re writing and your answers here were so great, you make your story sound SO good with these answers. Meredith sounds like my kind of people, ahah – and your aesthetic is sooooooo pretty ❤

    1. Hi Marie ❤ Thank you so much! I am glad that you are liking how the story sounds so far! Now I have to make the actual story good (which is the hard part lol!)
I think everyone writes at different paces. For example, Stephen King publishes a novel every year or two. On the other hand, JD Salinger just wrote Catcher in the Rye in his entire life, however it is remembered by everyone. I think that quality is more important than quantity when it comes to writing 🙂 You will find the inspiration to write again. I believe in you Marie 🙂

  4. AAAH I love your answers and aesthetics and WIP description so much. Not gonna lie, the fact that it’s based in Toronto made my heart skip for a second (or two). I LOVE that place. Keep writing! ❤ I am sure you are going to tell great stories!

      1. I visited in May and November, but mainly stayed in Vancouver for the duration of my Canada visit. Still, Toronto is a great place. 😀 I am glad you found a way to include your hometown in your WIP!

      2. Nice!!! I am moving to Vancouver in January actually 🙂 it is a lovely place!
I always find it easier to write about my hometown since I am familiar with the city and also because I love it very much 🙂

      3. Vancouver is my favorite place in the world. I so did not want to leave and I spent all my time on film sets and met the best people. It was a dream living there.

      4. Film sets?! :O
Yes Vancouver is a wonderful place which is why I am moving there 🙂

      5. Oh yes! Vancouver is called Hollywood North. They film there all year round and it’s super easy to go grocery shopping and accidentally run into a film set. I basically spent my entire summer seeing all my favorite shows irl haha

      6. Nice!!! Lol I remember watching a YouTube video about how many films are actually filmed in Vancouver, except the city is disguised as other cities lol! That’s awesome. I’ll look forward to stumbling upon film sets 🙂

  5. Oh Sophie this tag is amazing! 😀 I loved reading all your answers and discovering more about your characters as well. Rio sounds like my kind of character, mainly because I’d love to live in San Francisco (I’ve never really been to Orlando so can’t say if I’d love to live there yet!) and just because if I could I’d be on the first flight out of here when it got cold. Also I really love your fashion aesthetic for Edene, as much as I love the sound of Rio’s character I feel like Edene would be the character I’d relate to more. 🙂
Your WIP sounds incredible, and it’s great you’ve started writing it as well. I’ll wish you luck it just in general! 😀 ❤

    1. Thank you Beth ❤
I am hearing diverse opinions about which characters people like, which is great! Yes I am with you and Rio about living in San Francisco at this time of year :')
I am glad that you like the aesthetic and Edene's character! I also relate to Edene because I like fashion and art, however I am not as organized :') What I love about writing is that I can relate to every one of my characters in a different way (so they kind of each have a bit of me in them if that makes sense?!)
      Awww thank you Beth ❤

      1. That’s all right! 🙂
Yeah I guess everyone’s going to love and relate to different characters aren’t they? Personally I just want somewhere hotter than the UK is at the moment! 😀
I wouldn’t say I was that organised either but there are times and certain things I get really really organised over so honestly it depends. 🙂 Yes I completely get that, it’s the same with my characters because all of them have a little bit of me in them as well.
        That’s all right! 🙂 ❤️

  6. I love your writing style in this post! I sounds so professional and sophisticated… is it the author voice in you that comes out when you talk about your WIP & characters? 😋 It sounds like your characters are really well-developed from the details you have of them. Your answer and description of Zenith for the Santa question absolutely cracked me up — I was literally smiling when I read that. 😄 I’m so excited to read more about your progress for your WIP (if you decide to share any more details, of course!) because your cast of characters sound amazing and hilarious and full of life!

    1. Aw thank you for your sweet message Zoie! ❤ It is encouraging to hear that you are liking my story and my characters so far. Yes Zenith cracks me up too :')
Yes I suppose this is my writing voice haha 🙂
As I continue to write more of this story, I will be posting some snippets, likely in January. Stay tuned 🙂 🙂

  7. WOW Sophie!! It’s so great you started writing right off! I personally am an outliner but it’s just the general points I need to hit to get to the next point. I always leave plenty of room to pants it but as I have a writing partner we need to be on the same page as to where we are going!! ❤ I love when you share about your characters and I feel like I get to know you so much through them… THIS IS MY KIND OF BOOK! And my writing partner's too, lol. That is so rare… Thanks for tagging me! I will have to see what I can share myself!!

    1. Hi Dani!
That’s awesome in that it seems like you work very closely with your writing partner. Do you guys each write a different POV, or how does it typically work?
That’s great to hear that you are liking the sound of this book so far! Looking forward to hearing more about your project as well 🙂 ❤
