Winter is Here Write Tag (Never Forget Edition!)

Hello everyone!

Wow, can you believe that there are just 4 more days until Christmas, and 11 more days until the end of the year!? What is this!? *Cue shock*

Thank you Beth @ Reading Every Night for tagging me (this was way back in the day), and to Kat @ Life and Other Disasters for creating this awesome tag!

I’ve done this one a while ago (precisely ONE YEAR ago to be exact!) but I’m thinking, since a year’s gone by and I’m working on a new WIP, and I haven’t actually done a single write tag for this WIP, and I’m kind of missing write tags, and I need something to kick me back into writing gear, well, now is about the time to do this again.

  • Thank the person who tagged you but also link back to the original post!
  • Provide a short description of your WIP/story!
  • Don’t use the same character for more than 3 answers!

What is your WIP about again?

My WIP is titled Never Forget. It is a science fiction novel that takes place in the 2050s.

It is 2050, ten years after the collapse of the World Wide Web. Virtual reality video games, self-driving transportation pods, and automated military jets have long been taken off the grid. Landline telephones and the post office are back in service. Welcome to the Digital Dark Age.

Remington Wu, a Chinese-Canadian barista who makes a mean morning espresso at the local cafe, hides two secrets: the ability to remember every detail of his mundane life with machine-like accuracy, and a peculiar hobby. In his spare time, he scours pawn shops for remnants of the technological boom of the 2030s, and he is determined to find signals of the lost Internet from his apartment rooftop. When Remy connects an old modem to his phone line and sends a ping, his pen-pal baby sister Chloe shows up on his front doorstep, along with the pastel-haired, axe-wielding Ria who only Remy can see.

Which protagonist is most likely to break into Christmas song first? Bonus: What song?

In the other 11 months of the year, Remy is a Grinch: While making the effort to be nice and polite like a regular human being, he would rather hole up in his one-bedroom apartment and surround himself with his gadgets. But as soon as December 1st rolls around, Remy becomes a big Christmas marshmallow. His coworkers often catch him humming along to Let it Snow while pouring coffee or toasting bagels.

It’s the first snow of the season, who would immediately book a ticket to a hot beach location?

Ria. Because why would you freeze to death when there are much better places to be?

Which character believed in Santa (or a mystical equivalent) for the longest time?

By day, Hannah wears stud earrings and an intimidating frown to her neuroscience classes, but by night, she is a firm believer of everything supernatural. Santa Claus might not be the plump, bearded, chimney-climbing man that we think he is, but it is possible that the ghost of St. Nicholas exists in some shape or form.

Proof? She bakes gingerbread cookies every December 24th and they are gone by the morning. (No, she doesn’t eat them. Yes, she lives alone.)

Who is most likely to build a blanket fort and go into hibernation with books, Netflix and tea/hot cocoa/coffee?

Mimi loves all things comfortable. Coming home from a photoshoot, she peels off her make-up, washes out the product in her hair, and curls up on the couch with her favourite things.

Who would be the first to start a snowball fight and then get really competitive about it?

Did someone mention a fight? Whether it is with an axe, a dragon or a snowball, Ria is down for it. And Ria never loses.

Who buys their Christmas presents super last minute?

Christmas shopping stresses Mimi out. It’s the over-crowded malls with way too many options. It’s that all of Mimi’s friends are rich enough that they have everything they need, though they still want more and they are super ultra picky. And Mimi’s a Master Procrastinator so she leaves them for last minute.

There’s a local snowman competition, who would be the best sculptor? What would they build?

Back in elementary school, Hannah was the one who made everything into an art project. Her city planning project had the most beautiful elephant-shaped styrofoam shrubs. Her French picture book project was a 30-paged graphic novel about the descendants of angels who hid themselves among mankind. It follows that Hannah’s snowman sculpture would sprout bat wings, wield a sword, and sport combat boots.

If someone were to organize a secret Santa event, who would it be?

Chloe loves organizing events and she loves sharing gifts. What is more awesome than a gift-giving event?!

Someone refuses to leave the house unless strictly necessary because of the cold. Who is it?

Remy puts on his winter parka whenever the temperature dips below ten, and even his mittens can’t keep his hands from shaking. He can’t imagine what life was like back in the days when there were subzero temperatures in winter.

Who puts style before comfort and would rather freeze in fashionable clothes than be warm but not on trend? Bonus: Add a winter aesthetic for the character!

Mimi, but only because her job as a runway model demands it. Her manager would throw a fit if she were caught riding the Loop* in a hoodie and sweatpants!

*The Hyperloop, also known as the Loop, is the predominant mode of transportation in the 2050s. At the speed of 1200km/hr, the Loop can deliver passengers across continents and oceans in a matter of hours.

A Noveling Update

Soo…… As you guys might recall, in November I won Nanowrimo (yay!) although I was only about 80% done my novel. Because I was so close to the end, I set myself a goal to finish by the end of December. And I thought it was a shoo-in. If I could write 78K words in November, 22K in December is no biggie, right?

What happened, you ask? LIFE. Life came around and smacked me on the face.

Well, not in a bad way. The truth is that December is a busy month, filled with social events and the Christmas and end-of-the-year frenzy. Not to mention that there are lots of crazy and hectic things going on in my career (again, not in a bad way.) I also decided to revamp my exercise routine and give rock-climbing a try (it’s really fun!)

But because of all these things, I kind of fell off the bandwagon when it comes to writing. It doesn’t help that I have no idea how to end this novel. (The villain is too villainous! The protagonists don’t stand a chance!)

However much I hate to NOT meet goals that I set for myself, I think I’ll have to let this one go and aim to finish Never Forget in January.

Are you ready for the holidays? Do you get your gifts way ahead of time or are you a procrastinator (like me?) What are your favourite winter activities?

  1. Ugh I love this tag!!! It’s so cool to learn more about your WIP (and congrats on winning NaNoWrimo!!) I think I’m ready for the holidays, and I definitely like to buy my gifts ahead of time. This year I tried to buy everything from destinations/places I’d traveled with that person, or from a local small business. I also commissioned some artwork from a friend of mine at college, so I’ve been planning that since, like, October. Guess I’m a bit overprepared!!

    1. Thank you Annie!!
That’s awesome to buy presents ahead of time. It’s definitely the more organized way to go haha 🙂 it sounds like a good idea to buy gifts during your travels!

  2. Yay! I am glad you decided to do the tag again 🙂 It just now reminded me that I could probably do this for my own new tag as well haha I am sure you will find a way to end this novel eventually! I wish you happy writing ❤

    1. Hey Kat!! Thank you! These tags are so fun to do and my answers completely changes depending on my current wip haha, so I thought it would make sense to do this one again 🙂 I would love to see your answers for your current wip if you’re planning to do this tag again! Happy writing to you too 🙂

  3. Lovely answers for this tag, Sophie, I always love to learn a bit more about your WIP 🙂 I hope you’ll get to finish it in January, with everything often happening in december it’s a bit hard to focus on your writing and 22K is a whole lot to write in a month haha. Happy writing!! 🙂

    1. Thanks!! Looking forward to seeing your answers 😀

  6. Oh great answers for this tag, definitely appropriate as it’s now Christmas/wintery again (I have a ‘Write’ tag which I originally wrote last year when I was first tagged too, but as my WIP has changed so much in that time even though it’s the same WIP I may need to re-write it as well).
I loved learning more about your characters, based on your answers I definitely identify with Remy the most, mainly because like him I refuse to leave the house when it’s cold unless absolutely necessary. 😀
December kind of hit me in the face too, and life in general. January will be a month of catching up for me as well so i’m sure we’ll both meet our goals, you with Never Forget and me with everything else! Great post. 🙂 ❤

    1. Hi Beth!!
Yes a lot can change in between edits of a WIP so I am not surprised if you would have different answers for this tag than you did previously!
My favourite thing to do is to stay inside when it is super cold too haha. It doesn’t snow much where I live however there is a lot of rain xD
Sounds like December has been a busy month for you too. I was hoping to get more writing done this month but looks like it’s not happening haha. I think sometimes it is enough to have tried our best 🙂 Especially since it is the holidays coming up, it’s important to relax and have fun!! Haha yes we will save our goals for January 🙂 ❤

      1. When you consider I first drafted it a year ago now it’s even less surprising I guess. 🙂
Nah I don’t have a lot of snow, and to be honest I haven’t had much rain this year either. Probably means January is going to be full of both. 🙂
It really was, but now Christmas is out of the way it should be better. Hopefully you’ll be able to get more writing done in January (that’s my plan at least!) 🙂 ❤️

Wishing you all the best in 2019 ❤ 🙂

  8. Wow! I’m intrigued that the villain is too villainous and the protagonists don’t stand a chance. 😃

    1. LOL I guess that means the story is a good one right? However i am feeling stuck on this part xD
How is writing going for you?

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Lol I’ve been stalled on my story thanks to spending so much time on my blog and other things lately. :/ But well, there is a time for everything!

Yes, that is a good sign for a story. One may call it a “black moment” in the story arc, the place where there seems to be no hope.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Yeah I’ve been stalling too. There is just too much going on!! However I feel guilty for not writing more especially when the climax/ending is supposed to be the part that I am most excited about :/ do you ever have this problem?

        Liked by 1 person

      3. Yes, I still feel guilty about writing so slowly. But I’ve come to accept that I have to slow down, if I want time to do other things in my life, such as blog writing, reading, and going to the LGBTQ+ groups and events. I was a very fast writer during my gap years before grad school, where I finished writing 11 novels in just two years. However, my life was getting a bit monotonous, though I kept denying that I was growing bored with the sameness of my life routine. Nowadays, my writing pace is much slower, but I’m actually much happier, because I get to have a much more varied life.

      4. That’s a great point Sieran! It’s important to have balance in our lives 🙂 Thanks for reminding me!
I guess this month I’ve been re-focusing on my blog, work and friendships. It’s not only about writing anymore! That’s probably what’s slowing me down and you’re right that it’s not a bad thing 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Yeah I think it’s because I’ve experienced the other side of the fence (extreme focus), that I know how precious and important this side of the fence (having a varied and balanced life) is. 😁

Hey not quite related, but I once heard of this mini story:

A child stares up at the sky, aspiring to become a pilot.

The pilot looks down at the ground, and wants to come home.

(It was phrased more elegantly than this, but you get the idea!)

      6. Yeah I guess so 🙂 the grass is always greener on the other side right? And I guess we should enjoy life as it is while keeping in mind our aspirations for the future.
I’ve been writing a bit again! On the 24th I wrote 1000 words and yesterday I wrote 200 haha. Not much but it feels good to be writing again 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      7. Yeah I wrote for seven minutes yesterday, and wrote for another seven minutes the day before. XD Felt better than nothing. I’ve been really focusing on my blog, since I completely neglected it during Nanowrimo.

        Liked by 1 person

      8. That’s good! I’ve also been writing a bit every day. These days just 200-500 words/day haha but it’s good to get the creative juices flowing. I don’t know how I managed 1667 words on weekdays during Nanowrimo haha xD

        Liked by 1 person

      9. Here is a more eloquent way of saying it (and is closer to the original):

A child looks at an airplane in the sky, and dreams of becoming a pilot.

The pilot looks down at the earth below, and dreams of coming home.

      10. I like this quote! 🙂

  9. Well this is amazing post!! Such a unique way to find out more about your characters– and as always I love finding out more about your story.
So many details– a runaway model, very interesting– and all the characters seem so different so I would love to see how they all interact.
That does sound like you have had a very hectic month– December is always a busy month but yours seems especially so. And rock climbing sounds very cool– it is nice to try out new sports, I wish I did it more.
Ooh.. the villain is too villainous– my favourite type of villain. 😂 I hope you/your protagonists find a way!!
Some times you need to give yourself more time to complete things, good luck for your writing!!
I think one of my favourite winter activities is eating haha– always so much nice food in December. But I do love a good snow day as well. 😊

    1. Aww thank you so much for your encouraging message ❤ you are right that sometimes it is all right to take more time to get things done. I will keep that in mind!
Yes I love all the great food at around this time of year. It seems like there are chocolates (my weakness!) and other treats wherever I turn!
How is your December going? Wishing you a merry Christmas and happy new year 🙂 ❤

      1. You’re welcome!! ❤ Yes 😊
Yes full of nice treats– chocolate is definitely my weakness too. If I get a box of them– once they are open they are hard to resist. 😂
My December is going alright thank you– quite a lot of blog prep for January!! 😊
Thank you very much, I hope you have a great Christmas and a wonderful new year too ❤

      2. Haha yes! If there is a box of chocolates in front of me I wouldn’t be able to resist taking some haha 🙂
That’s awesome that you’re prepping ahead of time, blog-wise. Does this mean that you’ll have some posts up in January? 🙂

      3. I’m honestly so bad haha 😂
Yes I am feeling very organised which is nice for a change 😂 Yes I am starting back in January– it seemed like a good month to start. It has definitely been a while since I last posted. But I am very excited to 😊

      5. Yes the new year is always good for that! 😂 Thank you– yes absolutely I love it when you are excited for a post when writing it!! 😊

  10. The fact that you wrote 78K in November is already a crazy achievement — I think taking December off definitely wouldn’t hurt in helping you recover from the whirlwind that was Nanowrimo 😊 I planned to jump back into writing in December too, but I overlooked the fact that December was even more of a crazy month for me in terms of studying for finals, meeting up with people before the end of the year, and just holiday events (not that I’m complaining, because December is my favorite month of the year 😁🎄). I hope the holiday season has been going well for you so far, and I hope you’ll get around to finishing Never Forget in January!

    1. Aw thanks for the encouragement Zoie ❤ Yes I had been planning to do lots of writing in December too but it is a hectic month. It sounds like a busy time for you as well, especially with exams and holiday events, so it is reasonable to take a break for a bit and to come back in January (for both of us!)
Thank you and happy holidays to you as well ❤
