What are your hopes for your blog this year?

This year marks my 3rd year of blogging (Whoa! Time really flies!!) I have a reliable schedule going which really works for me, which includes posting twice a week and featuring authors in occasional Writers’ Corner posts. My personal life is pretty hectic right now, so my hope is to just continue what I’m doing and to continue blogging about topics that I love.

Who or what are you most grateful for in life?

I’m grateful for my wonderful family and hubby. I am fortunate in many ways and my life would not be what it is now without them. Thank you ❤️

If you could write a book with one of your favorite authors, which one would it be?

Oh boy!! This is a tough question!! I read almost all of Marissa Meyer‘s books and loved each and every single one that I’ve read. I admire her ability to create relatable characters and awesome character chemistry. I would love to work with her and learn about how her writing process works!

What’s one thing you’re leaving behind in 2019?

My travelling plans lol 😂

Describe your blog in three words

Creative, positive, fun!

What idea or concept do you think is still missing in the book community to be better?

I still see an overwhelming amount of positive reviews and hype out there. I think we all don’t want to be downers, but I would like to see a balance of both positive and negative reviews. I feel hesitant and nervous whenever I post a negative review, especially if it is for a book that is widely popular, however I think it is best way we can be honest. The truth is that we won’t like every book we read, and a book can be very popular and loved but still won’t appeal to everyone. I think seeing more negative reviews would add a healthy dose of realistic expectations even for the awesome books out there.

What would be an incredible but unlikely literary couple?

After reading Jo & Laurie, I really warmed up to this couple! However it was not meant to be in the original Little Women.

Name 3 books that you think deserve greater recognition?

I’ve been loving Middle Grade books this year, which I think don’t earn as much recognition or hype as YA books. Here are some of my favourites:

Which popular book do you think is overrated?

I loved Scythe and Thunderhead but I really couldn’t get into The Toll.

Stop time or go back in time? & Why?

I would love to stop time for two reasons: 1) I would get a lot more stuff done. There just aren’t enough hours in the day! and 2) Time just flies too quickly. I would love to enjoy the moment more!

My nominations for the awesome bloggers out there:

Charlotte, Juli, Olivia, Vee, Jai Lynn, Katie, Sam & Caro.

My Questions

  1. What are your favourite books of 2020 so far?
  2. Where do you write your blog?
  3. Which type of blog post do you like reading the most?
  4. Which type of blog post do you like writing the most?
  5. What book format do you like the most? (e.g. physical book, eBook, audiobook?)
  6. If you could travel to one place in the world, where would you travel to?
  7. Favourite dessert?
  8. If you are stranded on an island, and you can choose to keep either your cellphone or a lifetime supply of books, which would you choose? (Clarification: Your phone has internet and cell reception but you cannot use it to get yourself off the island.)
  9. Which book do you remember most vividly?
  10. Would you rather eat good food or wear fashionable clothing?

Let me know how you would answer some of these questions!

  2. Thanks for the nomination Sophie! That’s so sweet.

I love that you shouted out some Middle Grade books. I think they deserve more attention from book bloggers too! I think there’s just as much to enjoy as in YA and *whispers* they’re often written with more attention to quality/literariness.

    1. Hi Katie 🙂 Yes I wish that MG books would get more attention since recently I’ve been enjoying them even more than YA.

  3. Thank you so much for the nomination, Sophie!💛 I really enjoyed reading all your answers to this- and I agree, your blog is definitely such a positive, uplifting, and cheery corner of the Internet. xx I love what you said about having more realistic reviews! That’s definitely an important thing to bring up, and I agree with you- I need to work on reviewing more books that I didn’t *love* in order to have a more realistic outlook on what I’m reading.

    1. Thank you Olivia 🙂 I find myself being more eager to post positive reviews rather than negative reviews as well so it is something for me to work on too!

  4. I would totally stop time, too. Right now I am getting really irritated by not having enough time to do all that I want.
I was just thinking about you the other day because I didn’t recall a post from you in recent days. However, now I think that it might have been me not checking my Reader as often.

Thank you for the nomination. Stay golden!

  5. Thank you so much for nominating me, Sophie! I loved your answers and I’d have to agree that your blog is such a positive and uplifting space. I’m actually thinking about reading Other Words for Home next week, during the reading rush, and I’m so happy to know that you love it! I’ve been reading more middle grade this year and I’ve been enjoying it immensely. I agree with what you said about reviews, I feel like I always review books I loved and I should definitely balance it out some with not-so-stellar opinions. Btw, I’d totally go with stopping time as well, it would be so convenient 😊

    1. Aww thank you for your sweet words Juli! I’m glad to hear that you’ve enjoyed some MG novels this year. I agree that it’s hard to post negative reviews and I’m definitely guilty of not being too eager to write them too.

  6. I loved reading your answers for this Sophie, and thanks so much for nominating me! 😀 I couldn’t agree with you more, I would love to see more negative reviews. No matter how popular or beloved a book is there is always going to be some people who don’t feel the same way. That’s not a bad thing! In fact it makes sense. There are so many different types of people out there and that’s what makes the world so fantastic and interesting in the first place. We all aren’t going to like the same thing. I know some reviewers are hesitant because they don’t want to hurt the author’s feelings too but as long as it’s done in a respectable and meaningful way the author will understand and take the criticism with grace. Being a writer is hard and one must head into the profession knowing that not everyone is going to like what you write. It’s part of the package but the upside is when you find the readers who really do like your work then that makes all the difference!! 😀 ❤

    1. Hi Jai Lynn! Yes negative reviews are hard to write and I can really see both perspectives as the reader and the writer. Everyone is different and no matter how popular a book is, there are bound to be people who don’t like it. And I think as a reader, there is nothing wrong with being honest about that. You are right though that it is important to phrase it in a way that is not offensive to the writer though.
As a writer it’s always hard to receive negative feedback, especially when our work is very deeply personal to us. However I think we have to keep in mind that it’s impossible to please everyone with our book, even for professionally published books 🙂 I agree that it’s good as long as there are readers who really enjoy our work!

  7. Aww thank you so much for the award. I really look forward to answering your questions and loved seeing your responses to the ones that you’d been asked. The travel plans answer made me laugh, although I am sorry that you’re not able to at the moment. Ooh I’d love to see what sort of book you’d come up with if you ever got a chance to work with Marissa Meyer. As you’re working on MG at the moment it kind of makes me wonder what her take on that genre would be too.
I agree with you about negative reviews. They’re just as important as positive ones although I also find them tricky to write. I guess a big part of it is how aware I am of the amount of effort an author must put into their writing and so I feel bad picking faults in their work. If I dislike a book I am honest in my reviews though and say exactly what did and didn’t work for me.
And I 100% agree with you about stopping time. Imagine all the reading that could be done 😂

    1. Hi Charlotte! Haha yeah I had to think long and hard about what I left behind in 2019. I would’ve loved to say something meaningful and philosophical but travel plans was the best I could come up with XD
I’ve seen a few YA authors dabble in MG so I would be curious about Marissa Meyer’s take on MG as well!
Yes negative reviews are so tricky. Sometimes I hesitate when I write these reviews because I don’t know if I just wasn’t in the right mood to read a book, and it might not necessarily be a bad book.

      1. I thought it was a great answer 😅 maybe it’ll happen one day!!
Ah I totally get that. I’ve had books before where I couldn’t get into them at all then picked them up again in the future and adored them. It’s odd how greatly mood can affect your experience.
