Celebrating 3 years of blogging Q&A // Answering all your questions about books!

Hi everyone!!

Thank you ALL for participating in my Q&A and giveaway. (If you haven’t entered the giveaway yet, don’t worry you have until midnight today! Click here to go to the giveaway post!!) I was really excited to see all your questions come in. There were so many that I had to divide them into three posts. I’ll be covering all your reading-related questions today, and will be answering writing, blogging and other questions later on this week!!

Marie asked… You need to recommend one book, just ONE BOOK, no matter the genre, age range…. Which one is it and why? (I’m cruel. I’m sorry! ahah)

This is really hard!!! I’ll go with a gut instinct (which is a book I’ve been recommending to everyone these days) which is The Trials of Morrigan Crow. I loved that this book gave me all the Harry Potter vibes and transported me to a fun and magical place. Despite being a middle grade novel, this book delved into surprising deep and dark themes. I loved watching Morrigan grow up and find her identity, and I was rooting for her the entire way!

Forestofathousandbooks asked… What are three books that you think should be required reading?

The Girl Who Drank the Moon is a beautiful book about the devastating impact of lies and the power of truth. Other Words for Home is written entirely in verse, about a young Syrian refugee who struggled to fit in in the foreign country of America. The Book Thief is one of my favourite books of all time!! It described the day-to-day life of a young girl in the midst of a war and highlighted the importance of words and stories.

Caro asked… What are your go-to comfort shows/books?

I don’t watch shows anymore but I can absolutely share my favourite comfort books! In the contemporary genre, I loved loved loved the Heartstopper graphic novel series which I inhaled in a matter of days. I also really enjoyed The Kiss Quotient which is a funny, fast-paced and sexy romance featuring a character with autism. As for the fantasy genre, I loved the Lunar Chronicles series and Carry On which both kept me glued to the edge of my seat!

Zezee asked… If you were limited to reading only 3 books for the rest of the year, what books would they be?

Hahahaha…. this is hard! Although my TBR is miles long, being a mood reader I really don’t have a rhyme or reason to how I’m going to tackle it. For upcoming releases that I’m really excited to jump on, I’d pick Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow (third book in the Nevermoor series!!!) and Three Keys (the sequel to Front Desk!!) Counting Thyme is another book that sounds promising that I am looking forward to reading.

Esther asked… What are some books that you would recommend that are on Kindle Unlimited?

This is a tough question for me since I don’t have Kindle Unlimited. However I noticed that the Harry Potter series is on there as well as The Selection by Kiera Cass. If I were to get Kindle Unlimited, that would be where I would start first! (HP would be a re-read but I haven’t read The Selection yet!)

Esther asked… What is our favourite book from childhood? Adik asked… What was the first book that entered you to the world of books?

Could I pick two??! I spent my early childhood in China where I first learned how to read. Back then, I loved listening to the Journey to the West audiobooks and I loved reading Ne Zha picture books. Both were popular children’s stories from Chinese mythology! (I guess they were the equivalent of Cinderella or Jack and the Bean Stalk back in China?)

This is only slightly related but did you know that Ne Zha was recently remade into a really awesome Chinese animated film?? I loved this movie so much!! It’s on Netflix if you want to watch it!!

Margaret asked… If you could read any book again for the first time, which book would it be?

I would love to read Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom for the first time! It’s one of my favourite series that is on the top of my to-re-read list!

Olivia asked… How has your reading taste changed over time/been affected by blogging, or has it not?

I feel like as I get older, I’m reading younger and younger age categories. When I was in high school, I felt “too cool” for young adult, so I mostly read adult fiction. I was a huge fan of crime fiction and non-fiction at the time. Some of my favourite authors were Stephen King and Malcolm Gladwell.

I took a pretty long break from reading during pharmacy school. Well, I was technically reading… just lots of scientific journal articles and textbooks (bleh!!!) It was after I graduated and started working when I had the spare time to delve into books again. This was also the time when I discovered book blogging and fell in love with the world of young adult. I’d really have to credit the online book community for getting me hooked on YA!

This recent year, I got to know Middle Grade a bit more and I’m really starting to fall in love with this age category. I loved how MG books are fun, fast-paced, and SO cute, and it always impresses me how they can touch on issues like racism and death in a way that works for young children.

Juli asked… How has your system for rating books changed over time? Have you become more strict with your 5 stars, stopped using half-stars or anything like it?

Yes I did stop using half-stars!!! To be honest, part of it was because I was too lazy to make half-star graphics hahaha… (also they wouldn’t look great with my fish icons anyway!) Also I realized that I didn’t really need half-stars in my rating system. In most cases I am already leaning either the higher rating or the lower rating.

I think I’ve always been strict with my 5-stars, however I would like to think that I am not afraid to use the lower end of the rating system anymore. Of course there are only very rare situations where I give 1-star or 2-star ratings, because typically I only pick books that I expect to like, however I will use them if necessary!

Zezee asked… Which book cover would you like to redesign?

Usually I don’t have big qualms about book covers. I don’t love all book covers, but in most cases they are acceptable. After all they are designed by professionals! That being said I wasn’t a big fan of the cover for Permanent Record. It didn’t seem really relevant to the plot and… it’s just not that pretty?

Laura asked… If you could rewrite a book from a different character’s POV, which book and POV would you choose and why?

HMMMM I would love to rewrite The Toll from the POVs of Citra and Rowan only. I missed these two characters and I was so sad that I didn’t see much of them in this series finale!

Zezee asked… If you had the option to escape to another fictional world at this moment with your family and friends, where would you want to go?

I’d love to go to Nevermoor!

Charlotte asked… Are there any other fairytale characters that you’d have loved to see Marissa Meyer’s take on within The Lunar Chronicles? (As I know you’ve read them fairly recently).

Oh hmmm! This is not really a fairy tale character but I’d love to have Mulan included in the team of “princesses” (I put this in quotations because Mulan technically was never a princess, she was a Chinese warrior.)

Sebastian asked… Have you ever read manga? If the answer is yes, which series is your favorite? If not, you should try reading one, it’s so easy and entertainin!

Oh boy! I love this question so much!! I don’t talk about manga much on this blog but I used to be a huge manga fan. My favourite from back in the day was X/1999, a graphic novel about the end of the world in the year 1999. The series first began in 1992 however its last volume was published in 2003 and the series remained unfinished. I remember eagerly awaiting for the mangakas to release another volume… but was super disappointed when I realized it might just never be finished.

I loved the beautiful art style of this manga and the dark and twisted plot (probably one of CLAMP’s darkest series??) The mangaka group CLAMP is also well-known for other works like Card Captor Sakura and Tsubasa Chronicles. They also did the character design for the Code Geass anime!

Laura asked… What are 3 book-characters names that you truly love?

Dang. This is a tough question for me because I’m terrible with remembering book names haha. Thinking of the recent books that I’ve read, I like Khai (from The Bride Test), Luna (from The Girl Who Drank the Moon), and Willow (from Counting by 7s).

Let me know how you would answer some of these questions!

  1. I love that you put The Book Thief as one that you would like to be required reading. I second this motion! haha
But first of all, I am super late to the party and I just really want to congratulate you on three years of blogging! I loved reading the answers to book questions you got and definitely found myself in having read more YA due to the blogging community as well haha
Here’s to maybe 3 more years? I wish you nothing but the best, Sophie!

    1. Hi Kat!! Thank you! I’m glad that you are also a fan of The Book Thief. It’s such a meaningful book!
Cheers to another 3 years! I’m not going away any time soon πŸ™‚

  2. Congrats on three years of blogging! I finally was able to grab The Girl Who Drank the Moon this summer, and I am SO PSYCHED to finally be reading it.

  3. Half-stars give us more options, which means there’s more we have to think about. I look at the books I gave 3, 3.5, and 4 stars and wonder if they were really that different. But, I think I would want half stars if I couldn’t have them. It’s good to have the option. Maybe I should try not to use them, though… You got me thinking.

    1. Hi Goldie! Haha getting rid of half-stars really was a habit born out of laziness for me lol. I’m wondering if you put your reviews on Goodreads too? They only have full-star ratings, so back in the day when I used to do half-star ratings I’d always debate whether to round up or down lol.

      1. No, I don’t have a Goodreads account (I KNOW!). I do it via my local library. It’s easy for me to track the books that way.

      2. That’s pretty cool that you track your books via your local library! πŸ™‚

  4. :O that first question is hard! My gut instant was to go with Harry Potter but that doesn’t really need recommending – everyone knows about it – so I think I’d have picked Wicked Lovely because those fae need more love!! Also I seriously need to read Nevermoor soon. I’m hoping the library will have it when they reopen.I can’t believe that I’ve never read Carry On – that’s another that I hope to borrow whenever the libraries open. Or The Book Thief (although I have seen the movie of that one and am pretty sure the book could potentially make me cry – I don’t really cry at books but that one seems likely regardless). It’s awesome that the picture books that you read as a child have been turned into a movie! And terrible that they never finished the manga that you loved. I hate it when books just get dropped out of nowhere and you never get closure!! And yes I’d love to have seen Mulan in the group with the rest of the cast of TLC. She’d have been a wonderful addition!! She’s actually one of the two characters that came to mind for me when I thought of the question. If not her it would have been Jasmine thanks to my love of the live adaptation :L

    1. Hi Charlotte! Haha yeah I was tempted to pick Harry Potter for the first question as well πŸ™‚ Hoping that you will have a chance to read Nevermoor or Carry On – those were both pretty addictive and effortless books for me to read. The Book Thief took a bit more time to digest but in the end it was such a meaningful book. It definitely made me shed some tears πŸ™‚ I haven’t watched the movie but I should!
Glad that you’re a Mulan fan too πŸ™‚ When I went to Disneyland I was always a bit sad to not see much of Mulan there haha. I like Jasmine too but I haven’t seen the live adaptation yet (another movie I need to see!)

      1. I imagine a lot of people would be πŸ˜…
I think I’ll probably order both of them into the library when they reopen ☺️ yes I can imagine it was incredibly emotional. And I hope that you get to see the movie sometime.
Tbh I need to rewatch the Disney version as I haven’t seen it in years (I have spotted it on Now TV though so I’m hoping to soon) I was so excited for the new movie though as it looked awesome. Plus I have several retellings of it in my TBR. Aww that’s a shame πŸ˜” ah I definitely recommend it, it’s my favourite Disney live adaptation that I’ve seen so far.

      2. Yes the new Mulan movie looks awesome!! I was really excited for it and was sad when it was rescheduled because of COVID. However I think it will be released in July (in Canada and US at least?!) so I am looking forward to watching it soon πŸ™‚ I have Magnolia Sword on my TBR which I should get to soon!
I’ll have to put Aladdin on my list of movies to see (probably after Little Women!)

        Liked by 1 person

      3. It really does 😍 and yes I’ve heard the same thing about July. I haven’t heard about cinemas reopening here though so I have no idea what’s happening. Other things are starting to announce opening dates though so they may be open by then. Ooh yay I hope you enjoy it. That’s actually one of the books on mine too ☺️
I hope you enjoy them both πŸ’•

      4. Yes restaurants and gyms around here have started reopening so I’m hoping the theatres would reopen soon πŸ™‚ I don’t watch too many movies in theatres but I definitely want to see Mulan when it’s released!!

      5. Aww well I’ll keep my fingers crossed that they’ll open in time for you to see it πŸ’ž

  5. The Book Thief was my first favorite book of all time. ❀ It ABSOLUTELY should be required reading! I loved reading all of your answers Sophie, this was a great idea. πŸ˜€ I love reading manga and its funny that you mention it but I'm actually watching Cardcaptor Sakura on Netflix right now, lol. I used to watch it alllllllll the time when I was younger and watching it again all these years later just relaxes me so much. X/1999 sounds really interesting and I would love to see how CLAMP handled a darker story. I'm sad though that it might not ever be finished…. but I still want to give it a try!

    1. Hi Jai Lynn πŸ™‚ Yes The Book Thief is so awesome! Oh wow that’s so awesome that you’re watching Cardcaptor Sakura!! Is this the new adaptation or the older version?? This makes me want to watch it too πŸ™‚ I used to be a huge fan of this anime when I was a kid (except I had to go to my friend’s house to watch it since she had the TV channel hahaha…) Yes X/1999 is a much darker story than Cardcaptor Sakura. I could hardly believe that they were by the mangaka haha πŸ™‚

      1. I’m watching the older version, and it is bringing on so many FEELS. AHHHH, I JUST ADORE IT ❀ It is, legit, the cutest thing. You should totally watch it Sophie!! We can gush about it and its adorableness together haha! πŸ˜€

      2. I ended up watching the first episode during my lunch break just now haha. The English opening theme song gave me all the feels hahaha… Kero is so adorable!! This brings back so much memories 😊

  6. I loved reading all of these! Thank you so much for answering my question, and congratulations again on three years.πŸ’›I look forward to reading the other parts of this Q&A! Oh my goodness, I agree, The Book Thief should be required reading for sure. It’s definitely one of the best novels I’ve ever read and will always have a spot in my top favorites! I loved hearing about your reading journey and I find it really interesting that you read a lot of adult books in high school and now are into more middle grade. I absolutely love middle grade too, so thank you for always giving stellar MG recommendations!☺️This post was so much fun to read.

    1. Hi Olivia! Haha yes I’m getting so many votes for The Book Thief in the comments for this post πŸ™‚ It is definitely one of my favourite novels of all time too.
I’m glad that you like MG books too πŸ™‚ Thank you!

  7. Me too!! I’d love to go to Nevermoor. It just sounds so fun. πŸ™‚
I liked the cover of Permanent Record (never read it) but I do think it’s plain. The only interesting thing removing the plastic cover thing to see there’s just one face on it.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hi Zezee! Yes Nevermoor sounds like a fantastic place πŸ™‚
OH I only read the ebook version of Permanent Record so I didn’t realize there was the fancy plastic sleeve part of the cover. Dang! That actually sounds pretty cool!

  8. Ahhh I loved reading all your answers for these! πŸ˜€ I completely agree that The Book Thief should be required reading – I can’t even count the number of times I’ve recommended that to people, and they pretty much always love it. Heartstopper is definitely a comfort read for me too! ❀ And yessss I approve of your choice to reread Six of Crows! That’s also near the top of my to-reread list, and I can’t wait to revisit that world πŸ˜€

    1. Hi Margaret! Yes I haven’t talked to one person who didn’t like The Book Thief! It is such an amazing book and one of my all-time favourites πŸ™‚

  10. Congrats again on 3 years of blogging!! πŸ₯° I love Carry On as well and it’s a real comfort book for me too! And the Heartstopper graphic novels are simply too cute – I have found that most graphic novels are really comforting 😊 I personally still use half-stars but only when I have a really strong feeling that a book is closer to the higher rating!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thank you Caro!! Yes Carry On is such a wonderful comfort read. I also really love delving into a good graphic novel every now and then πŸ™‚ I can definitely see the value of half-stars and sometimes am tempted to use them myself!

  11. It’s interesting how you made the shift from reading more adult fiction to YA and MG; I feel like I moved in the opposite direction!
Also CLAMP manga is just so pretty!
I actually find I use my half-stars quite a lot but that might be because I’m quite indecisive.
Once again, congratulations on your 3 year anniversary!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hi Vee πŸ™‚ I am also very indecisive when it comes to giving books a rating. It actually helps for me to not give half-star ratings, because it’s easier to decide between, say, 3 and 4 stars compared to 3 and 3.5 and 4 stars haha.
