The Sunshine Blogger Award #3

Hi everyone!

It’s such a tough and strange time out there- I think we could all use some sunshine right about now!

I’m just kidding. Keep calm. We’re all going to survive this… I think.

Thank you to Abi @ Scribbles & Stories for this nomination. If you haven’t checked out Abi’s blog, be sure to give her a visit. Abi is so sweet and kind and talented! In addition to being a book blogger, she also has her own Etsy store!

The Rules

  1. Thank the blogger who nominated you in a blog post and link back to their blog.
  2. Answer the 11 questions the blogger asked you.
  3. Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and write them 11 new questions.
  4. List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post/or on your blog.

What fictional food would you love to try?

I’m very curious about Cauldron Cakes! Apparently they were selling these kits at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (but I missed them!)

What real life food would you serve to your favourite fictional character?

Oh hmmm… well cooking isn’t my forte but one of my favourite dishes to cook is stir-fried tomatoes and eggs. It’s like scrambled eggs except you also add tomatoes to it, then season it with a bit of salt. And literally that’s it!! It’s super simple to make and delicious too!

Have you ever dog-eared, highlighted, or written in a book?

Don’t kill me everyone but

Yes. I’ve actually done all of the above LOL back in the day.

I’ve dog-eared books (usually books that I’ve bought second-hand) when I really couldn’t find a bookmark. I’ve highlighted my old Pharmacy textbooks when I was studying for exams. And I’ve written in books back in high school English class (my own copies! don’t worry, not shared or library copies haha.)

Now I read mostly ebooks and the few physical copies I own are precious to me, so I don’t do any of this any more!

What’s your favourite blog post you’ve ever written?

My blog posts are my children and it’s really hard to choose one haha. However of my recent blog post I liked this one about how I was chosen as a mentee for Author Mentor Match.

I had so much emotions going on all at once at that time, and I felt that I captured it all very well in this post!

Do you enjoy listening to audiobooks?

It’s complicated. I used to love audiobooks (see my old discussion post here) and then I fell out of love with them (see my new discussion post here) and now I’m… somewhere in between. It really depends on my mood and how much I like the audiobook narrator.

What is your favourite book cover? (Or covers, if you can’t just pick one!)

My answer for this changes so often haha. I think my favourite cover out of the books I’ve read this year so far is Daisy Jones & The Six. It’s just a beautiful portrait and looks like it could be an album cover for an oldies rock band (definitely fooled me for a moment there haha!)

If you had the option, would you choose to stay in our world or go live in a fictional one?

Usually I would LOVE to stay in our world, but these days it kind of feels like I’m living in a fictional (dystopian) world haha. At this time I would love to escape to Hogwarts.

What do you use to write your blog posts? (e.g. notebook and pen, laptop, phone app…)

I use my laptop, although sometimes I draft my reviews (and occasional discussion posts) on the Notes application on my phone.

Do you like movie/TV adaptations, or wish they would just leave the books alone?

I don’t mind movie/TV adaptations. Usually movie and TV show-watchers include people who don’t usually read books, and if these people enjoy the movie/TV show, they might start reading the book version. Even if they don’t ever read the books, at least the movie/TV format is able to tell the story to a broader audience.

I myself started reading Harry Potter after I watched the first movie (and loved it.) I also have a friend who never liked reading (and still doesn’t like reading) but she is a HP fan and listens to the HP audiobooks now.

Did you enjoy reading as a child? What age did you really get into it?

As long as I can remember, I was surrounded by stories. When I was small, I listened to Journey to the West (a famous Chinese folk tale for children) audiobooks and my grandpa read his own fantasy novels to me.

This is one of the older TV adaptations of Journey to the West that I loved when I was little!

When I was 8 years old, I started reading English books for the first time in my English as a Second Language classes. My ESL teacher gave us stickers and other rewards for each book that we read- I was ecstatic because I was surrounded by books AND I got prizes for reading them!

Which do you prefer – paperback, hardback, ebook, or audiobook?

There are definitely pros and cons to each format and I would be here forever if I talk about them all in detail haha. I like physical books because I like feeling the pages in my hand, and they let me take a break from screen time. At the same time, I love how portable and convenient ebooks are!

My Questions

(For a bit of fun, I’ve made them pandemic-themed. But no worries, these questions are can be done at any time. Who knows? The pandemic might be over by the time you do this tag!)

  1. If the situation becomes dire and you have to trade away your precious books in exchange for food*, and you can only choose 5 books from your TBR to keep, which books would you choose?
  2. If you can only choose 5 books to re-read, which books would you choose?
  3. What food can you never get tired of eating?
  4. What is your favourite thing to do in the comfort of your home, other than reading and blogging?
  5. What are your thoughts about exercising inside the house?
  6. If you wake up tomorrow and realize that your life up until now has been a dream, and that you are in fact have been living in a different country or fictional world your entire life, what country/fictional world do you want to wake up in?
  7. Which pet (real or fictional) would you choose to be your self-isolation companion?
  8. Takeout or home cooking?
  9. Favourite social media platform?
  10. TV shows or movies?
  11. Do you binge-read books or read a bit at a time?

*Note: I’m just kidding here. Last time I heard, our food supply is pretty solid and won’t diminish any time soon- so no real need to panic!

I nominate these awesome people!

  1. Juli @ Kozy Words
  2. Kristi @ Confessions of a YA Reader
  3. Deborah @ The Reading Chick
  4. Bludgers and Broomsticks
  5. Olivia @ Purely Olivia
  6. Margaret @ Weird Zeal
  7. Sophie @ Me and Ink
  8. Esther @ We’ve Got Pockets
  9. Jai Lynn
  10. Caro @ The Bookcheshire Cat
  11. Vanessa @ The Wolf and Books

And you!!

Let me know some of your own answers to these questions! How is the pandemic treating you? Stay well!

  2. I had no idea they sell cauldron cakes?? How could I have missed it? Oh well, I guess now I have an excuse to go back to the Wizarding World. I only ever highlight textbooks, but I’ve seen a lot of book who annotate their books and it looks so pretty that i might have to try that. Also, I just started listening to audiobooks last year but I’m in love with them now, they are so convenient!
    Thanks for the tag!

    1. Yeah!! I don’t remember seeing cauldron cakes when I was there but when I looked it up the other day it seemed like it was an actual product?! I’d have to look for it the next time I go haha :’)
I like how annotated books look too haha- very sophisticated! Glad that you’re into audiobooks. Yes they are really convenient and portable 🙂

  5. Thanks for the tag Sophie! It will be something fun to do to get my mind over the dystopia we’re living in now lol. The cover for Daisy Jones & The Six does look great. That book is on my TBR along with Evelyn Hugo which I still need to read. And I have done the same with books!! I love to write in books but I only do it in my own personal copies of my favorite stories that I would take to the grave with me haha! I underline, write references to other stories and even questions of things in the story that I don’t understand right then but hopefully will after I finish reading the book. I know it’s seen as sacrilegious, but I feel like marking up your books makes them all the more special to YOU and shows all your thoughts through all the times you’ve reread them. I have fun reading what I was thinking the last time I read a book. Sending healthy thoughts and vibes your way! Stay safe Sophie ❤

    1. Hi Jai Lynn! Yeah it definitely feels a bit like a dystopia right now hahaha :’)
That’s awesome that you write in your books!! I haven’t done it in a while but I agree that it feels like you’re making your book special by putting all your thoughts into it. When I read my annotated books again I am always pleasantly surprised by the thoughts in my head from before haha.
Thank you Jai Lynn. Stay healthy and well 🙂

  6. Congratulations on the award Sophie!! 🙂
And yes those Cauldron cakes does look amazing and things out of the HP world as usually pretty cool and magical!!
I’ve never annotated in a book but I think I would be interested in doing it to try it out so maybe for one of my favourites as I will probably have lots to say, haha!!
The Daisy Jones cover does look like an album from the 60s and I love that because it obviously suits the book so much!!
Haha I sometimes draft notes for discussion posts on my phone as well, I just have an idea and run with it and it actually helps a lot I find because I would have definitely forgotten my point otherwise!!
I really enjoy TV adaptation, I think because I fell in love with TV first and I love that I can share the book world with more people and see the different takes on things. There is always a lot of excitement with adaptations so I love that as well but it is hard when it is disappointing!!
Thank you so much for the tag and I look forward to answering your questions!! ❤

    1. Hi Sophie!
Yeah definitely. If I don’t write down ideas in my phone I am 99% going to forget them all afterwards hahahaha… It’s also why I like to draft my reviews on my phone right after I read a book 🙂
That’s great that you like adaptations! It’s so true that they are a great way to share the book world with a bigger audience.
Thank you Sophie 🙂 Stay well!

  7. Thank you so much for nominating me, Sophie 💛 We all need a bit of sunshine right now ☀ I would honestly love to try so many of the Harry Potter foods, like pumpkin pastries or chocolate frogs (though it would be a bit scary as the frog actually moves). I did get to drink some butterbeer though when I went to visit the studios in London, but I don’t think it’s my thing 😅

    1. Hi Caro! Yes some sunshine would be great right now!! Haha I agree that I wouldn’t be able to stomach a chocolate frog if it moves! I also tried butterbeer as well when I went to universal studios- it was all right but different than what I had imagined haha :’) Stay safe and healthy!!

  9. Ahh, you answered my questions, I’m so happy!! 😄 It was such good fun reading all your answers.

I can totally see why your Mentee post is your favourite – reading it I can totally feel how much passion and excitement went into it.

I remember your discussion on audiobooks! It was actually what inspired me to write that question, haha.

I definitely wasn’t expecting a whole pandemic when I wrote the question about living in a fictional world but I think I know what my answer would be now, too! 😂

I’m currently pondering which books I would exchange for food – it’s a really difficult one!

Thanks for answering my questions, I hope you had as much fun writing this post as I had reading it 😊

  10. Thank you so much for tagging me, Sophie! I loved reading this post and all your answers. I hope you’re doing and well and staying safe during this pandemic.💛

I agree, I would love to know what Cauldron Cakes taste like, haha! I’ve never thought about it but I have no idea what they’re even made of. Sounds like something I will now be curious about. XD Also, I agree with your answer about ebooks vs. physical books! I usually prefer physical books, but during the pandemic I’ve had to start reading a lot of ebooks since I can’t go out to the library, and now I’m so grateful for their convenience.

    1. Hi Olivia! I’ve been reading more ebooks as well during this pandemic- they are just so convenient. I’ve also made some headway in reading some of the physical books that have been on my shelf for a while 🙂
      Wishing you all the best!

  13. Omg Cauldron Cakes are an actual thing? I so want to try one, they look so intriguing!! I could never write in books or highlight them. But if it was for school notes that makes sense. And I quite like adaptations tbh. There are definitely some that I regret not reading the books for first but I love the chance to see the characters on screen. Some are fantastic too!! And sometimes, especially with TV adaptations, the ejd result is so different that I kind of want to see the original version on screen still but I absolutely adore the direction that they take at the same time. So basically it’s like two versions of a story you’re interested in 😅

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yes I agree about adaptations! Sometimes they are very faithful to the original story but sometimes they take a different approach, which isn’t a bad thing 🙂 When I watch a movie/TV adaptation that’s too similar to the book, sometimes I get bored haha XD But in any case it’s always nice to see the story and the characters on the big screen!

      1. Ooh that’s true as you know what’s coming. Although sometimes I also think ‘wait why did they change that?’ 😂
