TBR Lows & Highs

Hello everyone!

Last week I saw this post at Sofii @ A Book. A Thought. about this fun way to clean up the TBR, and I thought- WOW I really need to do this!!

My Goodreads TBR only got longer after I started book blogging… and I am definitely adding to this list at a quicker rate than I am getting books off this list haha. Also, over the last few years, my taste in books really changed, and I find that books that I once wanted to read I really have no taste for now.

According to the rules below, I will select 5 titles that I will be purging from my TBR. And here is YOUR chance to convince me to keep any of these books!! I will tally up the votes at the end of the week and add the most popular “low” book back onto my TBR. (Thank you to Sofii for this great idea!!)

(Also, to be absolutely transparent, I’ve taken the opportunity to clear some of my “definite no’s” from my TBR already which did not make it on this list haha. The books on my “low” list below I actually don’t mind popping back onto my TBR if I am convinced. Yes I am ruthless when it comes to decluttering.)

Rules

  • Link back to the original post at Howling Libraries
  • Sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, ascending
  • Find 5-10 (or more, if you feel ambitious!) titles to purge from your TBR (the “lows”)
    • ALTERNATIVE OPTION: Find 5+ titles that are at the BOTTOM of your TBR—books you want to read someday, just not right now!
  • Post those 5 books in the list, with a brief explanation
  • Next, sort your Goodreads TBR shelf by date added, descending
  • List the last 5 (or more!) books you added to your TBR, with a synopsis or your brief summary of why you added it (the “highs”)

The Lows

I know this was a wildly popular book back then and I did hear quite a few good things about the book, but after reading the Goodreads summary for Ender’s Game again, it just doesn’t sound like something I would enjoy…

To be honest, this sounds like a fascinating book to me still. But I am very intimidated by its length (925 pages!!!) In the recent months I’ve been reaching for lighter, quicker reads, so I might not be feeling like reading 1Q84 for a very long time.

I’ve heard mixed thoughts about All the Light We Cannot See. Although for the most part, people seem to enjoy this book, I’ve also heard that the pacing is quite slow… and from my experience, slow-moving books tend to put me into reading slumps lol. Also, historical fiction is not one of my go-to genres.

Shatter Me is a pretty popular series that’s been sitting on my TBR for a while, but I never started it, and now the 6th book is coming out soon and I feel like I will never be able to catch up to it? The description does sound fascinating though.

I am a huge HP fan, but… I couldn’t really get into the Cormoran Strike series. I remember reading book #1 of this series which didn’t really make an impression on me.

The Highs

I haven’t read any of Naomi Novik’s books before (I know, who am I??!) but I’ve heard great things about this author!! Definitely looking forward to reading Spinning Silver!

After reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, I am super excited to read another book by the same author! Plus, Daisy Jones & The Six sounds fascinating!!

LOL. Guys, please don’t hate me, but….. I actually haven’t read Pride and Prejudice yet??!! I did try to read this book way back in the day, but that was during a time when I didn’t appreciate fiction as I do now. I am really looking forward to trying this book again.

I’ve only heard great things about Sadie so I am SO excited to read this!!

I’ve heard mixed reviews about Ninth House so I am going to go into this book with measured expectations, but I’ve loved all the books by Leigh Bardugo that I’ve read so far so I am still very excited about this one!

What are some of the highs (and lows) of your TBR? Any of my “low” books you thnk I should keep on my TBR?

  1. The only thing I can say about 1Q84 (since I haven’t read it yet) is that the translation you’re showing is actually 3 books in 1. I don’t think they published them separately unless you read Japanese. That being said, I’m not sure if the translation is divided into books where you could stop and read something else and come back later? I’d be interested to know since it’s on my TBR as well…

    1. Oh I see! No wonder the book is so long haha. The fact that it is actually 3 books in 1 sounds more manageable 🙂

  2. Sophie, honey!! I’m SO glad you started doing this, I hope we can both clean our TBRs and get rid of certain books 🥰
Personally of your Lows, I LOVE the Shatter Me series, it’s quite a cliche, but the characters are gold, so I hope you enjoy it if it continues in your TBR, I can’t stop recommending it, I love those books & I LOVE Sadie SO MUCH, it’s super heartbreaking, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
I hope you have a beautiful day and that you’re having an even better month! ❤️

    1. Hi Sofii!!
Up until now I’ve only been adding and not removing from my TBR haha, so it’s about time 🙂 Thank you for inspiring me with your post!!
Glad to hear that you enjoy the Shatter Me series. I love books with great characters, and recently I’ve been addicted to a few series in the fantasy/sci-fi genre, so I might give this another shot 🙂
I am really looking forward to reading Sadie and can’t believe I haven’t read it until now XD
      Thank you!!

  3. Sophieeeee!! This is a great idea 😀 1Q84 is on my TBR list and man I know, it looks super intimidatingly LONG. For real. I do think you should give it a go though, I’m going to try to this year! It was very highly recommended to me. Also, sidenote, we have very similar tastes in your High pile! I personally loved Ninth House but I do know there were some mixed reviews and I’m curious to see what you think of it. Also we can both feel bad because I haven’t read Pride and Prejudice either!! We are in the same boat lol

    1. Hi Jai Lynn!!
Wow that’s pretty awesome that we have some similar books on our TBR haha. Since both you and another blogging friend mentioned 1Q84 I will keep it on my TBR 🙂 It sounds like a pretty good book, and it’s reassuring to hear that it’s actually 3 volumes all in one book (at least the Japanese version.) Looking forward to hearing your thoughts/process on this book!
Yes I’ve heard a few mixed reviews about Ninth House as well, so I am keeping my expectations realistic haha 🙂

I bought All the Light We Cannot See on a whim and almost immediately regretted it because (at the time) I never read historical fiction, especially anything to do with WWI or WWII. It remained on my shelves unread for ages. I finally picked it up, I think I was doing a readathon and it was the only book that fitted a particular prompt maybe? Anyway, I LOVED it. I was almost in tears on the train finishing it. I would highly recommend giving it a shot! I recall it having a lot of pretty short chapters too so it’s easy to speed through.

I haven’t read any of your other ‘lows’ but I have to agree with you on the Cormoran Strike series – so disappointed with the first book!

Sadie and Ninth House are also on my TBR but I’ve already read Daisy Jones and it’s great, I hope you like it!

    1. Glad to hear that you’ve enjoyed All the Light that We Cannot See. Maybe I will give it a shot one day 🙂
I’m really looking forward to reading Daisy Jones. Good to hear that you’ve liked this one as well!

  6. I couldn’t get into the Silkworm, either.

    1. Yeah, that’s what I’ve been hearing about the Cormoran Strike series. Glad that I’m not missing out on much by giving this book a pass XD

  7. I haven’t read any of your lows (and haven’t even heard of one of them) so I’m not too sure what to suggest. I personally would probably pick either Shatter Me or The Silkworm but although they’re on my TBR I’m not really in a rush to read either. I’m also kind of worried about the Robert Galbraith book as I watched the adaptation of Casual Vacancy and really couldn’t get into it but I loved HP so much and do enjoy thrillers so I want to give it a chance.
High wise I’ve read one and loved it – Ninth House. I have seen the mixed reviews though so I hope you like it too. And the rest are on my TBR too. I actually hope to get to them all this year.

    1. Glad that you liked Ninth House!! Yes I’ve heard some mixed reviews but I’ve liked all Leigh Bardugo books that I’ve read so far so I’ll give this one a chance 🙂
I think I will let Silkworm go haha, at least in the short term, since I find that the series is darker and more slow-paced than the HP books (which is probably a given since it is adult) and these days I’ve been feeling like taking on fast-paced reads 🙂

      1. Thank you (: I hope you end up enjoying it too 😀
Ah right, probably a wise decision then. I should clear my TBR tbh but it’s so long and jumbled that I can’t face it :L I’ll probably do it once I’ve read a bit more off of it, especially the books that I’m most excited about.

      2. Haha yeah the TBR is always a struggle for us readers 🙂 I like to cherry pick what I’m reading next based on how I feel XD

  8. Ahh I loved Daisy Jones so, so much, I can’t wait for you to read it ❤ and I get it about Shatter Me, long series are intimidating. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on that one though, should you decide to start it 🙂

    1. So glad that you liked Daisy Jones Marie!! I’m looking forward to reading it soon 🙂 I’ve heard some good things about Shatter Me so I might pop it back onto my TBR haha.
