Today on Writers’ Corner, Christy J. Breedlove will talk about some of his experience with writing and publishing! Christy is the author of Screamcatcher: Web World, published April 2019.
1) Which author(s) influenced your writing style?
It was a combination of writers–Poul Anderson, Joseph Wambaugh, Michael Crichton, and Alan Dean Foster. I loved the humor and irony in their characters.
2) That’s awesome that you’ve published ten (or more?!) books already. How long does it take for you to write a novel? How many drafts do you write before you consider a novel to be polished?
I average about 2.5 to three months with a full first draft. I write fast. Yet it might take me a month to go over it about three or four times, discounting the publisher’s editing process.
3) Tell us a little bit about your novel, Screamcatcher. What types of readers would this book appeal to?
I was contemplating my dream catcher hanging in the living room one day and imagined that it was alive and filled with horrid nightmares of all those who had used it before me. I wondered that if it had a threshold or limit, how would it react and would a final sleeper cause it to implode or morph into something evil. What kind of a place would you find on the inside of a web world?
4) What are the sources of inspiration for your novel ideas?
Any kind of peculiar incident that happens to me or someone else, I take note of. I ask the question “What if?” I go from there and try and come up with the most unique plot–something that might have never been thought of before.
5) Are you self-published or traditionally published? Tell us about your experience.
Let’s see; I’ve been trade published about 11 times for the books. I’ve only self-published one book, which was a re-written reprint. My experiences have been about average or slightly above, except for the first two best-selling non-fiction books that I wrote many years ago.
6) What are the best piece(s) of writing advice that you have received?
I’ve watched every You-Tube instructional writing video put out by Anne Rice. She has that attitude “Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead!” Don’t stop until you finish the book.
