Come With Sophie to Australia!

Hello everyone!

In late-March I flew from Vancouver, Canada to the beautiful harbour city Sydney, Australia. It was a 20-hour long flight each way, but it was certainly worth our time. Today I want to tell you guys all about my trip, and share some of my favourite photos!

We started off in Sydney, where we did some sightseeing and ate some amazing Asian food.

We journeyed towards Melbourne in a rental car and…… of course, got lost, but in a good way! We came across the coastal town of Malacoote, which is within a national park. There was a beautiful beach trail that was several kilometres long.

It was breathtaking. First we came across a pebbly path where the ocean waves crashes with the rocky shore……. but upon closer look, those were not pebbles beneath our feet, rather they were little sea shells! Millions and millions of them! They were beautiful.

We were in love with the seemingly endless stretch of beach. Being one of the several hikers on the trail, the universe felt so big and vast and quiet.

On Philips Island, we visited a chocolate factory! Being a chocolate addict, of course I was enamoured. We saw some little penguins as they journeyed from the ocean back to their homes on the shore (no pictures unfortunately, because the little penguins are afraid of flash!) We also visited a koala conservation and had fun spotting some koalas. (See if you can find them in these photos below!)

Once we were in Melbourne, I was fascinated by the State Library of Victoria which was BEAUTIFUL. All I wanted was to sit in the grand hall and write my novel for a day, but……… my fiancé pulled me away because we had much more sightseeing to do. Unfortunately I didn’t have a chance to catch any good photos (I know!? How could I not!????! REGRETS)

As a writer, I have a sharp eye for research opportunities when there is a setting that is related to my novel. In my current WIP Children of the Sun, one of the characters had been imprisoned earlier in his life. When I saw the Old Melbourne Gaol on the map of course I couldn’t turn away. Even though no part of my WIP takes place in a jail, I thought a tour of the prison would give me insight into how this character’s past shapes his current life. This was an awesome, inspiring, unforgettable moment during my trip.

We saw some awesome street art in Melbourne. Here are some of my favs!

Last stop was Canberra, the capital of Australia. It was a small, low-key city compared to the festive and artistic Melbourne, but the city definitely had its own character. In our hotel lobby I saw a brochure for the Deep Space Network, which is a network of 3 satellites that facilitate communications between Earth and space stations. One of the Deep Space Network sites is located in Canberra, Australia! I got SUPER excited because the DSN was featured in Never Forget, so of course I had to pay a visit!

Have you been to Australia? Any notable recent adventures? Where is the farthest you’ve travelled from home?

  2. Ahhhh, I love your pictures. I’m so glad you had such a great time and got to see so many cities, too! ❤ I would love to go to Australia someday…. but the long hours on the plane, well… that's what bothers me the most haha.
Thank you for sharing your adventures with us! 🙂

The photos are lovely– the beach looks beautiful 😍
The old Melbourne Gaol sounds interested and I’m glad you enjoyed your visit. I love that it made you think of your WIP and used your experience to help your writing and the same with the DSN!!
I’ve never been to Australia but it sounds wonderful!! 😊

    1. Haha yes part of my goal this trip was to plan my WIP during the off times, so I couldn’t help but notice opportunities to do research 🙂 it definitely made some otherwise ordinary-seeming sightseeing opportunities more relevant and exciting for me. Thank you Sophie!!

  4. Oh these photos are incredible Sophie. 🙂 ❤ It seems like you had an amazing time and I am a little jealous because I would love to go to Australia myself one day (it's a long flight for me too, I think similar to your 20 hours, and it would be so much money so I'd need to save up).
The street art pictures look amazing, and I love how travelling can inspire us when it comes to writing. You never know even though none of your WIP takes place in a prison maybe when you come to-re-write or re-edit it you'll find yourself adding it in! 😀
Great post, and thanks for sharing your amazing photos as well. 🙂 ❤

    1. It was a fun time 🙂 the cities we went to weren’t too different from back here in Canada, but there are definitely more beaches over there! Although it was a long plane ride, it was definitely worth it for me 🙂
I was doing some planning for my wip during my vacation, so I couldn’t help but think about my story and my characters during the trip. Even though there won’t be any scenes in the prison, it was fun to get into the mindset of my character, and like you said you never know if it would come up in a scene later on 🙂
      Thank you Beth!! ❤

      1. I feel like something like that you’d need to be there for a while to make the most of the 20 odd hours you spent in the plane, which based on your post seems like you did. 🙂
I mean maybe not for this WIP but there’s always the next one right?
        That’s all right! 🙂 ❤️

      2. Definitely 🙂 Now that I write, I find that every bit of interesting fact and story that I hear or experience have potential haha 🙂 You never know when something will be story-worthy!

      3. Exactly, it’s interesting where we find inspiration, a lot of time parts of my dreams end up being in stories (when I remember them that is) but a lot of the time it’s also things I see in passing.

      4. I love inspirational dreams but I really don’t recall much of them. However I heard that there are some techniques to remember our dreams though I haven’t tried any of them before haha 🙂
Yeah some of my story ideas come from the things that I see everyday too!

      5. Ohh, I may look up those techniques. I don’t remember all of my dreams but I remember enough of them for my waking mind to fill in the blanks and create a workable WIP idea.

  5. WHAA who is this guy who was imprisoned earlier in his life?? That makes me even more curious about your rewrite of Children of the Sun, lol.

Haha I can relate to the desire to sit in one place and write all day long. One thing I complained about on tours, is that you have to visit so many places in one day. So even if you like where you are currently, you have to leave in a short period of time. No lingering. D:

    1. Lol! You’ll see in the next draft! That is if you’re up for trading novels again 🙂
Yeah! I’m not too big on tours actually for that reason. It always feels too rushed and crowded. When I travel I like to do my own thing haha. As much as I’d like to have a lot of down time while traveling, I always feel the need to do everything and get my money’s worth XD However on this trip I was glad to have had the chance to do lots of novel planning.

      1. Of course I’m interested in trading novels again! I might not actually have anything to trade with you this time 😂, but I’ll still be glad to read and give feedback. But a caveat is that since I read the first draft, my opinions and impressions may be different from a beta reader who is reading Children of the Sun for the first time.

LOL one place I didn’t want to leave, were the water lily ponds in Hang Zhou. It was very hot, but the water lily ponds are famous and beautiful. Too bad we had to rush back up to the bus so soon!

      2. Yay, so glad that you want to read Children of the Sun 🙂 🙂 I’ll keep you posted about when I’m done this draft. I am aware that your opinion would be different from someone who’s reading it for the first time, so I think this time around I will be getting a mix of beta-readers, those who have read the previous draft and those who haven’t.
As for what to trade, I’d be happy to read one of your more recent novels if you are willing to share! 🙂

  7. I thought I had not seen anything from you for a while and just discovered that I was not following you. I am assuming this is a glitch as I surely didn’t do so on purpose!

Australia? Funny thing is that I was going to go there last autumn before changing to Canada instead. I will be in Montreal again in a month from now.

I still hope to go to Aus maybe later this year.

    1. Darren!! I thought we were friends!!! D: (haha I am just kidding :’) )

Australia was a fun place! Interestingly, I found that it is similar to Canada in many ways (lots of wide roads and big open spaces, trees, rock, water, etc) so maybe you didn’t miss out on much coming to Canada instead? 🙂 However I think it will still be fun when you visit Australia. Plenty of things to do and lots of nature to enjoy.

That’s great that you’re coming to Montreal again! Hope that you will enjoy the trip!

    1. That’s great that you’ve been to Australia as well! I agree that a week would be a short time to go, especially if your flight was as long as mine haha 🙂 Do you think you will visit again? Thank you!!

      1. I’d absolutely love to visit again. It is my plan. But probably not for another decade or two. What about you?

      2. Same here haha. Australia is just a bit far for me, so although it is a beautiful place I probably won’t have the chance to go until sometime later down the line 🙂

  9. I’ve never been to Australia, but this post makes me want to! Also, I feel like one of the benefits of being a writer is that nearly every experience helps us with our writing — and it’s cool being able to travel to a place specifically for research 😊 Your trip to Australia seemed wonderful!

    1. Absolutely!!! I love that part of writing. Being a writer definitely makes me more curious about everything haha, not knowing when I will come across an interesting nugget that will become a story 🙂
