NaNo Day 22 Check-In // The Rising Author Tag!

Hello everyone!

How is it going? Wow is it already more than halfway through November? And do we only have a week-ish left of Nanowrimo? I can hardly believe it because this month passed in a blink!

Today I will be doing the Rising Author Tag which I saw on Beth‘s blog! (Do check out her post because her WIP sounds absolutely fascinating!) I haven’t done a tag in a while and this one seemed to overlap with what I wanted to write about in this post, AND it looked like fun, so I thought I’d give it a try ๐Ÿ™‚

Rules:

  • No tagging back
  • Tag four people
  • Thank the person who tagged you
  • Come up with 10 new questions

What is your current WIP about, and whatโ€™s its status? (ie. plotting, writing, editing, etc.)

The novel that I am writing for Nanowrimo is titled Never Forget. I’ve shown a blurb several weeks ago, but I decided to rewrite it based on the feedback of some friends. Hopefully now it is better ๐Ÿ™‚

It is 2050, ten years after the collapse of the World Wide Web. Virtual reality video games, self-driving transportation pods, and automated military jets have long been taken off the grid. Landline telephones and the post office are back in service. Welcome to the Digital Dark Age.

Remington Wu, a Chinese-Canadian barista who makes a mean morning espresso at the local cafe, hides two secrets: the ability to remember every detail of his mundane life with machine-like accuracy, and a peculiar hobby. In his spare time, he scours pawn shops for remnants of the technological boom of the 2030s, and he is determined to find signals of the lost Internet from his apartment rooftop. When Remy connects an old modem to his phone line and sends a ping, his pen-pal baby sister Chloe shows up on his front doorstep, along with the pastel-haired, axe-wielding Ria who only Remy can see.

Do you plot things out and/or outline, or just figure it out as you write?

I am a proud plantser!!!

Plantser
plantยทsโ€‹er | \หˆplan-tsษ™r \

Someone who is not either a planner (outlines all aspects of their novel) or a pantser (writes where their hearts, or pants, takes them) but somewhere in between.

I like to outline my novel (using the Snowflake Method!) and come up with detailed character sheets, plot and subplot summaries, and list of scenes prior to starting my novel. However I find I don’t go into detail about the specifics of each scene like the planners that I know. When I start writing a scene, I only have a high-level idea of what is going to happen and I love making things up as I go along.

What are some book ideas you want to write in the future?

My next step after Never Forget will be to go back and edit some of my recently-finished but unedited manuscripts, including Children of the Sun and Shapeshifter (remember those!??!)ย

However!!! While writing Never Forget, an idea came up in my mind…… What is it like to live in a colony in the centre of the Earth!? (It’s probably impossible either because it is too hot or too cold, which shows you how much I know about Earth geology hahahah, however impossible possibilities make great book ideas right?!)

Out of the characters youโ€™ve written so far, who are your favourites?

Wow this is a hard question! I’d say Chloe Wu, who is Remy Wu’s little sister, is my favourite right now. At first glance, she is the opposite of what you would think of as a strong female MC. She is whiny, spoiled and afraid of being on her own. Chloe’s life is a mess: After a disastrous relationship fallout with her ex-boyfriend, she drops out of university, and, fearing confrontation with her adoptive parents, she moves in with her brother in Vancouver. Despite her shortcomings, Chloe has an ingenious mind, more than she gives herself credit for, and she is fiercely loyal to those she trusts.

Whatโ€™s your writing routine, if any? (ie. snacks, music, time of day, location, etc.)

Music and tea are musts!!!

During workdays, I wake up an hour early and head downtown for work. I start off my writing by typing up a short blurb on my phone during my commute (300-500 words). Then I plop down in a cafe for 1 hour before work with my notebook and pen and start writing! In the evening after work, I pool all these words together in Scrivener document on my laptop.

During weekends or days off, I do some writing at home or at a nearby cafe ๐Ÿ™‚

Show your WIPโ€™s aesthetic in images or words (or both)!

Haha I haven’t done any official aesthetics for my novel yet. However, here are my Pinterest boards which I use mainly to get an idea of what the characters and settings look like:

What (or who) motivates you to write?

I am motivated by how much I love my story and my characters, and I know that if I don’t finish my story, it will just… disappear. Which is a scary thought.

Related to this, I am motivated by FEAR. I want people to read my story, and I look forward to being able to be published (in which ever way, shape or form!) and I am terrified that one day on my deathbed I will regret not having done the things that I always wanted to do. I know this may sound like an exaggeration, but there are days when life gets busy and writing is hard and I am so afraid that I would never get to be the writer I’ve always wanted to be. And that motivates me to get off my butt and write haha.

Lastly, I am motivated by you guys here on this blog and to my amazing writing buddies that I’ve found here (you know who you all are <3). It’s so great to know that I am not alone. It is motivating to know that there are people out there who care about my stories and my writing, and to have people around me who are also pursuing their writing goals ๐Ÿ™‚

What do you find is the easiest part about writing? The hardest?

The easiest part is when the writing flows and I forget that I am writing, and I let myself be completely ingrained in the story itself. For me this is most likely the very beginning, the climax, and the resolution of the novel. I absolutely LOVE the burst of energy when I get to the end of the novel and suddenly I get superhuman powers and can write for hours and hours on end haha ๐Ÿ™‚

The hardest part is to start writing! There are definitely days when I am dragging my feet to the desk, thinking “oh darn, I have to wriiiiiiiiite” like a zombie haha. But once I get started, I am usually over the hump. On other days, it is hard to find time for writing when my work days are already hectic.

What genre will you never try, and why?

So far I have written YA or adult contemporary, science fiction, fantasy, and dabbled a bit in mystery/horror/paranormal. I might be a bit too shy to write erotica haha ๐Ÿ™‚

Share a tiny (or large) snippet/excerpt of your writing, if youโ€™re comfortable!

Oooooh I love to share snippets, although I think this is the first time I am sharing a snippet from this novel!

Jay reaches for the virtual reality goggles and a liquid crystal display screen that Remy guesses must be a portable tablet from the late 2010s era. To Remyโ€™s dismay, Jay throws them haphazardly into the boxes. They land with a clang.

โ€œThem gadgets, they take too much space than they are worth. Anโ€™ no one knows what to do with ’em. Thatโ€™s the problem,โ€ Jay grumbles. โ€œAnโ€™ ye know what son? Iโ€™mma business man, I go with the market, ye know? Some things are in demand and I sell โ€˜em, some things no one want, I might as well make room for more clothes or heck, lamps, or somethinโ€™. Ye know? I know ye like them gadgets, Remy. But they come in more than they go out. Everyday someone wants to sell an old VR headset or one oโ€™ those VR contact lenses or some holographic ambience generator. I pay too much money for them than I make back. They losinโ€™ me money.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re just going to throw them away?โ€ Remy says, his mouth drops open and the question stings as the words leave his mouth.

โ€œYe. What else?โ€ Jay says, then he nods at the back of the room. โ€Ye see those sofas? I give them two days, three max. And ye see the books on the shelves? Hot commodities these days, actual paper books, ye know. In a week theyโ€™d be replaced by a new haul. But these?โ€ He gestures to the shelf of electronics behind him. โ€œHeh. Iโ€™ve been with half these babies for a decade.โ€

Remyโ€™s eyes are fixed on the box of gadgets in a disarranged heap in the old paper box. They look sad, forlorn, as if theyโ€™d once been the apple of their ownerโ€™s eye, but now, abandoned and forgotten. Remy remembers.

โ€œIโ€™ll take them. How much?โ€

I’m going to tag these awesome writers ๐Ÿ˜€

I know the tag is asking me to list 10 additional questions, however I would actually want to know how you would answer the same 10 questions I answered above!

If you are in love with your WIP and you want to shout about it to the world, then consider yourself tagged!

How is November going for you? What are your writing habits? Are you a planner or pantser (or a plantser like me?) Tell me more about your WIP!

  1. Okay I really should be sleeping, but I couldn’t resist reading your post, lol. I’ll write in more detail later, but now you’ve got me thinking: Would I want to try writing erotica one day? I think my greatest difficulty in writing erotica, is that I might get bored!! I’m currently not very creative in my sex scenes, so it might start looking very dull and unstimulating. But hey, practice makes perfect. Maybe I will eventually become more creative.

I read one erotic novel for an 18th century English literature class, LOL. It was called Fanny Hill by John Cleland. Yes, this was assigned reading. I really love this book because of all the metaphors, and how the author managed to make it so varied and interesting, despite how repetitive and potentially boring the sex act is. I also always appreciate implicit/metaphorical descriptions of sex. I think explicit sexual descriptions are too easy in comparison. They’re not easy per se, since you still have to struggle with finding good word choices without repeating yourself too much. But I think metaphorical/ implicit portrayals of sex are harder to write and more enjoyable to read.

Plus, aside from the sex, there needs to be SOME story. I have actually never watched porn before, but from what I’ve heard from friends and acquaintances, even porn videos have to have some short background story or context. Erotica would have even more story context than a porn video would. But erotica probably has less story compared to a romance.

Oh wow, now I’m intrigued by this idea! I’m more interested in LGBTQ+ erotica, though, as you may expect.

    1. Lol! I think if you are curious about writing erotica, you shouldn’t hold back from giving it a try!
I agree that metaphorical and implicit portrayals of sex would be more interesting for me to read as well. I can see how they are also more challenging to write.
I’ve read a few erotica novels (though maybe they are a mix of romance and erotica?) but I agree that they would have more story than a porn video haha. Let me know if you ever give writing erotica a try! I would be curious about your experience with it haha ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Lovely answers for this tag, Sophie! Every time I hear about your WIP, I want to read it more and more, I have no idea where you come up with these wonderful ideas everywhere, but I am always so impressed. And your aesthetics and snippets are amazing! I also admire so much that you can get motivated to write before work. I agree that starting out the first words is always the hardest part, too ๐Ÿ™‚
Thank you for tagging me – did this one last week but thank you for thinking of me ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. Hi Marie โค Aw thank you so much! That is encouraging to hear that you like the sound of this WIP so far. I love writing before work because then I don't have to feel pressured about writing 1667 words in one go when I get home haha ๐Ÿ™‚
I feel terrible for missing your post! I've been off my blog-hopping game these days because of Nano haha. I will definitely check it out ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. Hi Priyasha! I’ve actually been falling off the reading bandwagon during November because I’ve been prioritizing my writing haha :’) Unfortunately there isn’t enough time to go around but I hope to get back to reading lots in December!

Anyways, looking forward to doing this sometime! Thanks for tagging!

    1. Hi Caro! So glad that you like the premise of my WIP so far! This is very encouraging to hear haha ๐Ÿ™‚
I like to get some writing done first thing in the morning, because I know if I wait until after work, I will feel pressured to have to write 1667 words all in one go haha. Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚
Your Nano progress looks great so far! That’s awesome that you’re ahead of the game! Otherwise how is writing going for you? ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. This was a lovely post. I love that fear motivates you to write and I can totally relate– I do get worried that one day I will be thinking “why didn’t I do that?” I like that you use it to inspire you instead of cause you to panic. ๐Ÿ˜Š
I like your process of writing by writing a short blurb of what you are going to write for that day. It sounds really good I might try that ๐Ÿ˜Š
I have loved getting to know more of your story. It is really interesting approach to technological age– to see it fall– the digital dark age. I am very intrigued. I want to know more ๐Ÿ˜

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thank you! Haha I do panic a bit about writing here and there but that’s part of being a writer right?
By “short blurb” I mean that I actually continue writing my novel from where I left off, not a summary of the scene haha. Because my commute time is short, usually I only end up writing 300-500 words during this time. Then I continue on at the cafe before work ๐Ÿ™‚
I am so glad to hear that you enjoy the sound of my novel so far. It is encouraging that you feel intrigued by the premise ๐Ÿ™‚ Happy writing!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Yes I think the panic is part of the package ๐Ÿ˜‚
Oh right sorry I misunderstood. But you gave me an idea of what I can do to stay more organised haha ๐Ÿ˜‚ it’s nice that you use your commute time and go to a cafe. I have never written in a cafe but I would like to one day ๐Ÿ˜Š
Yes I definitely do. Thank you. You too. ๐Ÿ˜Š

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Haha yes! I also heard on a YouTube video the other day that mood swings and panic are all part of being a writer haha. The important thing is that even when we arenโ€™t feeling confident about our WIP, we keep on pushing on!!
I love writing in cafes because I can easily block out the noise, however I know that itโ€™s not for everyone and some people need to have a quiet environment when they write. You do you, Iโ€™d say ๐Ÿ™‚

        Liked by 1 person

      3. Haha yes!! Actually you have to keep writing.
Yes that’s true the noise may be distracting. I will have to try it one day and see what I think. I would love being close to coffee though ๐Ÿ˜‚

        Liked by 1 person

      4. I think if you havenโ€™t tried writing in a cafe before, it might be good to give it a try! You never know, it might become your favourite spot. I find that I am actually less distracted in a cafe because there are fewer distractions than at home (dogs, easy access to food in fridge, my partner who talks to me, etc) ๐Ÿ™‚

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Yes I see your point about less distractions at school I used to go to the common room at times and I was way less distracted then when I was at home (unless my friends were there ๐Ÿ˜‚). So it might be the same for me at a cafe ๐Ÿ˜Š

        Liked by 1 person

      6. Yeah! Let me know how you like the cafe environment if you do get to give it a try ๐Ÿ˜€

  7. Your Never Forget WIP sounds amazing Sophie, and that snippet has made me want to know everything about the story and the characters. ๐Ÿ™‚ I already love Chloe, and I want to learn more about this world where itโ€™s been ten years since the Internet collapsed.
Plantser is actually a good way to describe how I plan too, but I think I need to come up with a method of planning that works for me (I remember your posts about the snowflake method so maybe Iโ€™ll try that for my next WIP too). Based on how you write Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ll be published one day, Iโ€™d love to see your books on the shelves in some form or another because Iโ€™d love to read your stories. Also good luck with going back to your Children of the Sun and Shapeshifter WIPs, and your new idea sound pretty cool as well, who’s to say thereโ€™s not a colony living in the middle of the Earth, itโ€™s not like anyoneโ€™s ever travelled there! ๐Ÿ˜€
Great post, and happy writing! ๐Ÿ™‚ โค๏ธ

    1. Thank you Beth!! Itโ€™s encouraging to hear that youโ€™re liking the premise and the world of Never Forget so far ๐Ÿ™‚
I would recommend trying plantsing out if youโ€™re looking for something in between pantsing and planning! What is great is that you can decide how much pantsing and planning you want to do! I know pantsers who plan more and others who pants more haha. I love the snowflake method so far because it allows you to go as detailed as you want in terms of planning (down to a detailed description of every scene!) however it is possible to stop at the earlier steps of the snowflake if you donโ€™t want to be as detailed ๐Ÿ™‚
Aw thank you โค I am hoping to eventually be published one day, but right now I am just enjoying the process of creating my own worlds and my own stories and becoming a better writer through practice ๐Ÿ™‚ I feel like if I become published writer, it might feel different and more like a job haha though I would still enjoy it.
Happy writing to you as well โค looking forward to updates about Death Born! Hope that the rest of November and December will go better for you. Take care ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Based on what I know about how I write and just my planning skills in general I think plantsing would be a good fit for me. Yeah Iโ€™ve heard you talk about the snowflake method a bit and it seems like a good fit for you so hopefully it will be a good fit for me too. ๐Ÿ™‚ I like the sound of being able to go as detailed as you want.
Thatโ€™s all right, and yeah thatโ€™s the part I love as well, coming up with the various WIP ideas and planning and writing them. If youโ€™re a published writer thatโ€™s your job and itโ€™s a whole different thing isnโ€™t it?
Thanks Sophie, I hope you manage to get loads more words written these last two days, and yes you take care too. ๐Ÿ™‚ โค๏ธ

      2. Yay! Glad to hear that you’re liking the sound of the snowflake method so far. If you do give it a try, let me know how it goes!
Haha yes, I think being a published writer would mean lots of non-writing related tasks in addition to writing! However much I want to get there one day, I’m just going to enjoy writing as a hobby at the moment ๐Ÿ™‚
Thank you โค I'm at an exciting part of my WIP so hoping that this would boost my writing speed for the next few days! Hope that you will continue writing as well, while finding a pace that works for you ๐Ÿ™‚

      3. I definitely will, I’m open to trying new planning methods and I have a few new WIPs I need to start planning soon too.
Exactly, right now I’m happy with keeping writing as a hobby. Maybe one day that’ll change but for now I’m just enjoying writing as is.
That’s all right, and thanks Sophie. ๐Ÿ™‚ โค

      5. Yeah I will do. I feel like now NaNo is over Iโ€™ll be able to actually take the time I need to write and plan everything out. As much as I love NaNo itโ€™s a lot trying to write 50k words on one month! ๐Ÿ˜€

        Liked by 1 person

      6. Haha yes Nano was quite a hectic month, and sometimes I don’t have enough time to think out the plot as much as I’d like to ๐Ÿ™‚ That’s good that now you have the time to plan out some new ideas!
