NaNo Day 1 // My Nanowrimo WIP!

Copy of Hello Preptober!-2

Hello everyone!!!

Can it be November 1st already?! Can you guys believe that it is the beginning of the amazing and crazy month that is Nanowrimo? (Eeeek!)

giphy47

How are you all feeling? I am a mixed bag of emotions- excited to start a novel that’s been in the back of my mind all October, and nervous to see if it all goes according to plan! Yes haha… a lot of feelings going on all at once.

Wait… What is Nanowrimo?

Na·no·wri·mo

ˈnænoʊ ˈraɪmoʊ/

A frenzied month where novelists and aspiring novelists take on the ambitious and crazy goal of writing a 50,000-word novel in 30 days. For more information, check out the official website.

(And YES, there is still time to commit to Nanowrimo if you haven’t yet!! We are on the first day, which means that even if you start thinking about your novel today, you are not behind!)

Blog_div2

To be honest, I was debating about what to post today, whether it will be a WIP aesthetics post or my usual monthly wrap-up post, until I saw this awesome video by ThePatchworkNerd on youtube about the Nanowrimo WIP Tag!! I wasn’t formally tagged, and of course I don’t have a youtube channel, but I thought it would be fun to do a blog version of it 🙂

It would be an opportunity for me to introduce my Nanowrimo WIP to you guys! More importantly, I want to hear about your Nanowrimo WIP and goals!

1. What is your Nanowrimo WIP?

Never forget aesthetic

My Nanowrimo WIP is an adult science fiction novel titled “Never Forget.” Time for a blurb!

It is 2050, ten years after the technological apocalypse that tore down the Internet. Welcome to the Digital Dark Age.

Remy is a peculiar man with the ability to remember every detail of every day of his life with flawless accuracy. By day, he works at the corner cafe and fails at first dates. By night, Remy attempts to rediscover the Internet from the rooftop of his apartment.

Meanwhile…

Ria is your average unicorn-haired college student, or so it seems. On week nights, she crams for her next exam while trying to ignore her annoying brother. On weekends, she hits the popular bars and parties. The rest of the time, Ria contemplates how to break out of the matrix.

Everything changes when Remy and Ria’s worlds collide.

2. What stage is your WIP in? (First draft, second draft, third draft, editing, betas, etc.)

This will be the very first draft of this novel. I love the feeling of writing a first draft, and I haven’t sped through one since the last time I did Nanowrimo in 2016, so let’s bring it on!

3. What are your goals? (Monthly, word count goals, etc)

It’s kind of complicated! Firstly, I am going to with the traditional Nanowrimo word count goal of 50,000 words. However, looking at the plot and the outline of Never Forget, it seems like it will likely be a 70-80K word novel. Therefore I am going to try to finish this novel by the end of November as well. *Big Gulp*

giphy43

That being said, I’ve never written 80K words in a month EVER in my life. So if I don’t finish my novel this month, I would be happy with 50K words 🙂

4. Do you have rewards for meeting certain Nanowrimo goals?

I’m not too big on giving myself rewards, instead I rely on good old self-satisfaction!

Actually……. As some of you guys know I am a huge tea-lover!!! My friend just bought me this beautiful set of tea leaves as a gift:

IMG_6213 2

There are 5 types of tea in total, and I thought, what a coincidence that there are 5×10,000 words to write during Nanowrimo!! So I swallowed the urge to unbox these containers of tea all at once. Instead, I will be opening one container of tea with each 10,000-word milestone!

5. Are you in a Nanowrimo cabin or have Nanowrimo buddies?

I thought cabins were a thing for Camp Nano but not for Nanowrimo? (Are they!??! Please correct me if I’m wrong!)

Yes! I have some Nanowrimo buddies that I look forward to writing with! You know who you all are 😉 I’ve also joined my geographical region on the Nanowrimo forums and I am looking forward to try out some write-in events!

6. Have you done Nanowrimo in the past (November and otherwise)? How did it go?

I’ve done Nanowrimo three times previously in 2005, 2007 and 2016, and I was fortunate to complete the 50K words and a novel in each of the years. (Though the end results were novels of questionable quality hahaha…..) I also successfully completed Camp Nanowrimo twice in April and July this year.

However a few things changed in my life since 2016:

  • Work got much busier, and
  • I have two dogs, a long commute, and a wedding to plan, and
  • My typical novel length is much longer than 50K words now!

giphy46

So this year is up in the air!

7. What are you most excited about for this year’s Nanowrimo?

A few things actually!

This is my first year going into Nanowrimo with a plan! Plot, research, world building and characters are mostly figured out! I’ve done the same for my previous (non-Nano) WIP and had a good result, however I am curious whether Nanowrimo will be a different experience this time around!

I am going to *gasp* be social during Nanowrimo this year! In past Nanowrimos, I stayed away from the Nano forums and social media in general because I wanted to focus on writing. However, after being in the blogging community for a while and meeting some writers here, I realized that writing doesn’t have to be an isolated activity, especially not during Nanowrimo. Therefore I am looking forward to these things:

  • Doing some Nanowrimo “check-in” style posts throughout the month of November, so I can update you guys about how I’m doing, and see how you guys are doing!
  • Dabbling a little bit in Twitter!
  • Going to some write-ins with fellow writers!

giphy45

So yes, very excited 🙂

8. What is your #1 advice for people doing Nanowrimo?

Keep at it and don’t give up! There are going to be low-word-count days (life happens!) but we should accept them as a bad day and move on. Even if we fall behind, there is always a chance to catch up. Whether we reach our word count goal at the end, it is the journey that matters 🙂

I tag…

Whoever wants to do this tag!

Nanowrimo is already rolling and we’re all short on time, so I won’t tag anyone specifically. However! If you have some time and you are excited to announce your Nanowrimo WIP and your goals for this month, I encourage you to do this tag and I look forward to hearing about your WIP!

Blog_letschat

Are you doing Nanowrimo this year? Tell me about your WIP! Do you have a reward system, whether it is for Nanowrimo or for other goals?

A small announcement: I will be switching things up for the month of November!

As mentioned previously, I’ll be posting once weekly rather than twice weekly. Instead of my regular bookish posts, I will be creating “check-in” style posts where I can update you guys about my Nano progress and also see how you are all doing as well!

  1. I think I am going to use this month as a reason to get all of my writing pieces together. I write a lot of things out long hand first. This is a good thing since last November my hard drive fired i mean that literally when we went to retrieve the data it started smoldering. So over the last year I have been digging notes that I didn’t throw away for one reason or another in a folder now I need to go through and re compile what I have and try to come up with a loose outline to see if I still want this story to go in the direction i started with. Sorry for the long winded comment.

    1. That’s awesome that you will be doing some writing this month, although it sounds like it will be different from the traditional nanowrimo way! That’s good that you’ve done some writing long-hand, though it would have been devastating if you’ve lost some of your writing along with your hard drive! Wishing you all the best with compiling your current novel. I guess you will be starting draft 2? 😀

  2. SOOOOO excited! I didn’t end up writing at midnight, like I thought I would. I was asleep before it officially became November. But I’m still excited.

80K in the month! That’s a heck of goal. Good luck! But whatever you get done is great. Most of the world will write 0 words this month.

    1. No worries about not starting at midnight! I was asleep at 11:20 so I didn’t make it either haha. I did a word sprint this morning during my commute which was super fun! Have you started writing yet?
My Nano goal feels daunting however we’ll see how it goes!! If I complete 50K I will count it as a win haha 🙂 Good luck to both of us!!

      1. Not yet. Sadly, between work, kids, life, etc I probably won’t get a chance to start until 10pm! Such is my life!

      2. Life happens right? I think it doesn’t matter when you start writing as long as you get some writing done!

    2. I did not know starting to write at midnight was a thing. It sounds like a great way to fail – staying up late, being tired, losing motivation, etc.

      1. In the past, it’s only been about 30 minutes. When normal bedtime is 12, 12:30 is no big deal. If my normal bedtime was 10, that’d be a different story.

      2. True.
Ever since I started having to get up at 6am, going to bed that late does not work for me anymore. And I was WIPED last night.

      3. I think some people write better in the morning and some writer better at night (though it also depends on when we practically have time!) I love staying up late to write however since I have to wake up early in the morning, it makes more sense to write during my morning commute and in the early evenings after work

  3. What a fun post.
I’ve started. Halfway to my daily goal…

  4. Your WIP sounds so cool!! Good luck with it! Writing 80k in a month is a huge and admirable goal – I’m super impressed! But even writing 50k is still such an accomplishment! Win win either way, I’d say 😊
I like to reward myself with chocolate when I hit word goals! Because how better to motivate myself than with sweets? 😄 Though I like your tea idea!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hahaha i am definitely starting to feel daunted by my ambitious goal! But as long as I get 50K, I’ll be counting that as a win 🙂
Did you start writing yet Margaret? I like your idea of using chocolate as a reward! Usually I eat chocolate regardless haha but maybe now I should limit it to only when I reach my daily goals, hmmm….. xD

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I’ve barely gotten over 1k words so far, which I guess is a start! And yes, using chocolate as a motivator is surprisingly effective! 😁

        Liked by 1 person

      2. That’s all right! I think 1K is still a lot of words in one day when you think about it 🙂 Keep it up!

  5. Having just finished my minimum word allotment for the day. I’m excited and nervous. I wish I wasn’t so far away from everywhere. Oh well.

  7. This is such a great tag, Sophie! ❤ I absolutely love your novel's synopsis, it sounds like such a real book I'd pick up on a shelf in a bookstore and would want to devour immediately. I can't wait to learn more about it all and read some snippets maybe, too 🙂
I love your rewards idea, it sounds SO great!! I love tea too, so that'd be the perfect reward for me too haha.
I'm doing NaNo as well this year, but I'm not aiming for the 50K necessarily, I'm aiming to write a little bit every day and to, hopefully, finish my round of edits I finally started again a couple weeks ago. Fingers crossed! 😀
    Happy writing Sophie!! ❤

    1. Thank you Marie ❤ I am so glad that you are liking the sound of my WIP. I think I'll be posting some interesting and funny snippets in the upcoming weeks 🙂
Tea is the best, isn't it? I have to have a cup of (preferably caffeinated!) tea beside me when I write.
I am happy that you are also doing Nanowrimo 🙂 It sounds like you are being a rebel this year since you will be editing rather than writing, which is awesome!
Hope Nanowrimo is going well and can't wait to hear more about your WIP 😀

      Liked by 1 person

      1. YAY! I’m so very excited to hear more about your WIP soon and to read snippets, yay!! 😀
Yeah I kind of am a rebel – I’m not too sure what I’m doing, but… I’m doing it hahaha. 🙂 Thank you! ❤

      2. That’s the fun part right? How is your writing and editing going so far? 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      3. It really is 😀
It’s going slowly but surely, I’m writing every day even if I am not writing the 1666 words required by NaNo every day, I still am doing a little bit so… I guess it’s okay? 🙈

        Liked by 1 person

      4. That sounds like progress to me! It’s great to write every day, even if it is not as much as the traditional Nano target 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

  8. Very interesting story idea, sounds like you will have plenty to explore in your new world– always very exciting. And I hope you will enjoy your tea, they come in very cute little tins. I have never really done rewards for writing but if I have a break, I will tend to have some food so maybe that counts. I look forward to reading your check-in posts. I still can’t believe it is actually November *eeekk*

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Glad that you like this story idea 🙂
I love snacking during writing breaks. It definitely gets me motivated to think “500 more words and I get a snack” haha 😀 Hope Nanowrimo is going well!

      1. I really do!! Yes me too that is literally what I say to myself haha 😂 thank you, I hope yours is too. 😊

  9. I will definitely be stealing this tag Sophie, I feel like it will be the perfect way to introduce my WIP when I write my first post about my NaNo progress in a couple of weeks (I’m giving myself a couple of weeks to set myself and my WIP out so I have some updates to actually talk about). Never Forget sounds really good, and I love that aesthetic, I’ll be looking forwards to hearing more about it and based on what I know about how you write I feel pretty sure that 80K words will be a sure thing! 😀
The tea based rewards will hopefully work really well (do you think your friend planned the 5 boxes for each 10K words when she brought them for you? :D) I feel like I need to come up with a reward system for NaNo, I work better when I have something to look forwards to, but I’m not sure what I could use (something to think on I guess).
Great post, and good luck! 😀 ❤

    1. Hi Beth 😀
Yay!!! Glad that you are going to give this tag a try! I was going to tag you but I wasn’t sure if you had time to do it now that Nanowrimo has already started! But if you do get a chance to do this tag, then I can’t wait to see your answers and learn more about your current WIP 🙂
I am happy that you like the idea of this new WIP- that is encouraging to hear 🙂 I’ve heard other writers say that they use something as simple as chocolate as a reward for daily word goals or even big thing like a vacation at the end of Nanowrimo haha. I think your reward can be anything you want it to be!
Thank you Beth ❤ Hoping Nanowrimo is going well for you as well ❤ 🙂

      1. My blogging and reading has taken a little bit of a step back but I should be able to find some time in between the writing I plan to do. I’ve actually started planning a new WIP alongside writing this one, so as soon as I’ve finished this one I’ll have another I can jump straight into.
Chocolate may be a good idea, I’ll be sure to come up with something.
Thanks Sophie, well it’s certainly inspired me, how’s it going for you at the moment?

        Liked by 1 person

      2. That’s awesome that you have an idea for a new WIP to jump into! It’s always good to have a stash of ideas on the back burner, right? 🙂
It’s been going well! Today I decided to join a local Nanowrimo write-in event (a bit nerve-wracking at first by everyone is nice and focused on writing so it is quite motivating!) Seems like it is a productive weekend for me, writing-wise. How is your weekend going? 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      3. Ohh, the local write-in sounds like a great idea. I may have to see if I can find one near where I am (I’m sure there’s one somewhere) but I get my best writing done on my own so maybe that’s not for me. Still it sounds like you’re weekend has been productive, mine has been too, just in different ways to what I thought. 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      4. The write-in was an interesting experience actually. I’ve been to two different ones so far and the groups were both pretty quiet. I expected to be distracted by conversation, but everyone just buckled down and wrote haha. They turned out to be productive writing sessions for me 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Yeah I tend to be easily distracted as well, but I guess everyone’s there for the same reason so it’s not like there’ll be a lot of distractions. I imagine everyone wants to write as much as possible! 😀

  10. Oh this is such a fun Tag, I love it! 😃 The idea of rewarding yourself with tea is really cool! I always use stickers in my NaNo Journal if I have hit my daily goal, but having something a bit ‘bigger’ seems like something I really want to try out 😊
And good luck with your project! 🙂

    1. Hi Caro 🙂 I love the idea of using stickers to mark the completion of a daily goal! And I wished I had stickers for my own journal haha!

  11. Yeah I don’t believe the November Nanowrimo has cabins. Wow nice reward system! I don’t have a reward system, and am driven only by plain old friendly competition, lol.

I doubt that I have ever written 80K words in one month either. Ha I already fell behind yesterday because I was distracted, stubbornly figuring out a forwarded puzzle game my mom sent over. Full speed ahead today on writing!!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hahaha I love a bit of friendly competition! I like that we can see how our word count stacks up to our writing buddies’. It sure helps to motivate me as well 😀
I also find that now that I told everyone that I’m going to do 80K-ish words, I HAVE to do it, which is motivation as well XD Yup, here’s to full-speed writing!

[…] I should’ve actually titled this post “NaNoWriMo: I’m maybe tentatively doing it, but super worried I’m going to fail, plus idk what to write, and also, a tag” but that is kind of a mouthful and way too long to fit onto a featured image graphic. However, it is true! I am tentatively participating in NaNoWriMo yet again! For today’s post, I’m doing a tag that I’m borrowing from Sophie’s Corner. […]
