September Wrap-Up & October Goals!

Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of MINI-REVIEW-7

Hi everyone!

Whoa…. Can it be that it is already time for another monthly wrap-up? I feel like I just wrote the August wrap-up? Where does all the time go? (If someone has solved this mystery, please do let me know!)

All in all, if I were to summarize September in a series of GIFs… Work was like this:

giphy18

But life was like this:

giphy19

Reading

giphy20

I read 4 books in September! Only one of them was on my initial monthly TBR, but still! (You’d think that I should stop making monthly TBRs by now, hah 🙂 )

Six of Crows was hands-down my favourite series in the YA fantasy genre this year. I loved the premise, the plot twists and above all, the cast of amazing characters. Read my review here.

After Six of Crows, how could I not read Crooked Kingdom right away? It was a brilliant finale to the series. I loved how the plot became ever more mind-bending (you wouldn’t think that was possible after Six of Crows but alas it was!) and that the characters shone more than ever. Review coming up.

There was so much hype around the Crazy Rich Asians movie. Wherever I went, someone was talking about it! This was what made me pick up the book. I wasn’t a big fan of the overly elaborate writing nor the head-hopping omniscient narrator. Check out my review here.

Ohh how I was waiting on the edge of my seat for Wildcard (Warcross #2)! I began listening to the audiobook on the date of its release in Canada and finished it 4 days after. It was a bit dialogue-heavy though I enjoyed this finale overall. Read my review.

October Goals

Screen Shot 2018-09-23 at 3.02.56 PM

So…… I am a bit behind on my Goodreads goal (understatement.) At this rate I would have to read 6 to 7 books each month, which includes the month of November which is Nanowrimo. That is frighteningly unrealistic! I will take the liberty to modify my Goodreads reading goal to 50 books, which I was able to comfortable accomplish last year.  My goal for October would be to read 4 books.

I’ve debated about whether or not I should still do TBRs, because I am terrible at sticking to them. However I decided to continue doing them because I feel a bit lost without them (what if I have no idea what to read next?) and because it is so much fun.

Here is my TBR for October:

Ever since finishing Six of Crows, I’ve been in the mood to read more books in the fantasy genre. Which means that it is time to catch up on some of VE Schwab’s books! I am super excited to read Vicious, which was apparently VE Schwab’s first adult fantasy novel, and I hope to continue with Vengeful which was recently released in my country. I also heard great things about City of Ghosts, which is a middle school novel. I am going to round it all out with a YA contemporary novel which is The Exact Opposite of Okay.

Writing

giphy21

So… My goal in September was to finish writing Shapeshifter, however many words it takes. Um, more on that.

I wrote a total of 30587 words this month, which is phenomenal by my standards. However the problem is that I am not (yet) done writing my novel. I had estimated Shapeshifter to be a 60K-word novel, and now it is 73K and continuing LOL.

On a bright note, I can feel the excitement of this novel coming to an end, the plot is rolling and I’m feeling my characters more than ever. I know exactly what has to happen from now until the end, and I am absolutely determined to capture it all using words! There are still a few days left until the end of September…. so who knows!? 😉 (Updates incoming.)

October Goals

I want to finish writing Shapeshifter! Final stretch!

Also, does October ring a bell??! Yup, it is time to prep for Nanowrimo! To be honest, I am not 100% sure if I can win Nanowrimo this month, because I can foresee November being a busy month for me at work. However after missing Nanowrimo last year, I don’t want to give up the chance again 🙂

Blogging

giphy22

I have to apologize for being a bit quiet in the blogosphere in September. Not only did I miss out on blog-hopping, I was also late in replying to comments. I really wanted to prioritize my writing this month. Also, I kept myself busy in other aspects of life.

All that aside, here are the blog posts that I really loved this month!

Zoie @ Whisked Away By Words shares with us her WIP, which is titled A Writer’s Relevation. I haven’t read this work yet though I am definitely excited to because Zoie’s blog is full of insight and positivity. Here is her summary of the book:

A Writer’s Revelation is a collection of my journal entries from August 6th to August 30th. The 6th was when I got back from two months of traveling; the 30th was around 2 weeks into my junior year of high school. I wrote with the intention of creating a perfect lifestyle for myself to take with me into the school year. What I was instead left with was a revelation about my identity as a writer that changed the entire structure of my life.

Beth @ Reading Every Night talks about the bookish tropes that she loves, including my personal favourites: the enemies to lovers and friends to lovers tropes.

Marie @ Drizzle and Hurricane Books is co-hosting Shattering Stigmas 2018, a blogging event dedicated to mental health. If you would like to contribute a guest post, you have until October 1 to sign up! Here’s more about it:

Three years ago, Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight launched the first Shattering Stigmas, a blogging event dedicated to posts about mental illness to address and challenge the stigmas against it. Through book reviews, discussion posts and lists, Shattering Stigmas has continued conversations around mental illness for the past three years.

Dominique @ 3C Style shares more looks from the When Fashion and Nature Collides collaboration! This one is about celebrating the ocean.

I recently came across Rasya @ To the Moon and Back‘s blog. I loved this post where she shares 4 Japanese quotes that gave her strength.

October Goals

In October, I want to be a bit better at my blogging game. My goals are to reply to comments by 1-2 days at the very latest, and to blog-hop once per week.

Now that Nanowrimo is coming up, I am planning something a bit special on this blog. Pssst, watch out for more writing posts in the upcoming month!

Life

giphy23

Remember this wedding which is supposed to happen sometime in the future? Yup, I finally made some headway in planning it! We booked the venue, found a photographer, made a rough list of our invitees, decided on a theme and… booked an engagement photoshoot!

Yes!!! It’s actually happening!

To prepare for this photoshoot (which is coming up in early October), I decided to sit down at my sewing machine and hammer out two more pieces for my wardrobe. More on this later 🙂

October Goals

The photoshoot! Yay!!!!

Some more DIYs- sewing, thank you cards, and… origami!? (More updates coming up!)

  1. These are some great achievements and goals. And I have to say, the fact that you racked up 30k+ this month makes me want to write so much more! I’ve been focused on editing lately, but I only have 13K to go on the current WIP and have been averaging 3-4K per day. Should be done soon!

    1. Thanks JW! Great progress on your WIP and 3-4K of editing per day sounds pretty impressive too! What are your plans after this round of edits? I don’t know if you are looking for beta-readers but let me know!

      1. Thanks for the offer, Sophie. I would totally take you up on that, but I’ve already been through the beta reader stage.

I’m actually going to be querying when this draft is complete! Exciting!

        …and nerve-wracking…

  2. Wow! Your agenda is as busy as the one of a prime minister. You are really efficient and organized. Amazing all the work you can do. Congratulations on your wedding. I look forward to learning more about the Great Day. I wish you all the happiness you deserve! And thank you very much for the pingback and your usual support. By the way, the September edition of When Fashion and Nature Collide reveals the doggie T-shirt that Lisa has produced. Darren is the model. Note: Your dog will be part of another special project. Coming soon. I will send you a link when everything is completed. Speak to you soon dear friend. xoxo

  3. I think mine was the opposite of yours: life is chill but uni is definitely not. It’s like an endless cycle of lab reports, quizzes, and presentations! But maybe it’s just me not adapting to it yet, because now I find it easier to breathe even with the many assignments. I’m super super excited when I heard someone’s getting married in the community and shares their planning with us, so I hope everything goes well for you and I’m excited!!! ❤

    1. University sure drains a lot of time doesn’t it? That’s great that you are able to manage that in addition to your blog!
Thank you ❤ wishing you a wonderful October!

It seems like you’ve been busy busy, though, but wow, I admire the fact that you can write so much, too, you’re doing so great. I’m happy you’re inspired by your story and I can’t wait to read more snippets and everything! 😀
You also had such a fantastic reading month! I am so happy you enjoyed Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, they are fantastic books.
I hope you’ll get around to reading The Exact Opposite of okay, I am very curious about that book, I can’t wait to hear your thoughts about it 🙂
Have an amazing October!! ❤ ❤

    1. Six of Crows is so good and I’ve been telling everyone to read it lol 🙂 I am glad that I read this series!!
Thank you! I think the fact that I’m coming to the end of my novel is giving me an extra push these days. Do you think you’ll be doing nanowrimo this year Marie?
Hope your month is going well 🙂 Wishing you a wonderful October ❤

      1. I don’t know just yet – probably not, or not the conventional way anyway, I don’t think I can commit to it :/ I wish I could. Maybe I’ll change my mind until then, who knows hahah 🙂
        Thank you so much!! ❤

      2. Nanowrimo is definitely a big commitment (time and effort!) I think this time I might be doing a modified Nanowrimo rather than the conventional one haha. No worries if you don’t do it but let me know if you change your mind 🙂 ❤

  5. Wow it sounds like you had an intense September Sophie, the fact that you wrote over 30K words for your current WIP is incredible! Doing 50K for NaNo should be a breeze after that. 🙂
I am definitely looking forwards to NaNo, I’m in full research and prep mode at the moment because I am determined this time around.
You’ve got some amazing books planned for next month too, so I hope you manage to get around to them all. Vicious and Vengeful are on my October TBR list (as much as I have one) and I can’t wait to see what you think about The Exact Opposite of Okay as well. 🙂
Good luck with your goals for this next month, the planning for your wedding sounds exciting, and thanks for featuring my post as well. ❤️
Great recap, and I hope you have an amazing October. 🙂 ❤️

    1. Hey Beth 🙂
Haha yes it has been an intense month! The fact that I am near the end of my novel definitely gives me an extra push 🙂 November will be busier for me so we’ll see! I am also not sure if I can finish a novel in 50k (most of my novels have been 60-80k). That’s awesome that you’re doing nanowrimo as well and that it seems that you have a head start on the planning and research. Will this be for draft 2?
I finished Vicious today (loved it!) and already got the audiobook for Vengeful. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts 🙂
Thank you Beth!! ❤ Wishing you a wonderful October as well!

      1. I can imagine, I guess after writing that much and when you can see the finish line in sight it’s easier to give yourself that extra push.
I suppose even if you can’t finish a novel in 50K you can get started on one, and it’ll be a good start too. Yeah I love taking part in NaNo, and it will be draft two, I’m determined to finish it this time around. 🙂
Oh that’s great, well hopefully you’ll love Vengeful as well. That’s all right, and thanks. 🙂 ❤️

  6. I’m so glad you enjoyed Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom!! I agree that the second book is somehow even more epic than the first one. And it looks like you’re gonna have lots of awesome VE Schwab for October! Plus NaNo prep! I’m doing NaNo this year too and I’m can’t wait for November!!

    1. I loved the Six of Crows series so much and I am so glad that I decided to read it 🙂 That’s awesome that you’ll also be doing nanowrimo this year. Do you already have an idea in mind? Looking forward to hearing about your project 🙂

  7. You achieved quite a lot in September and you read some nice books as well. September was hectic for me and I will be very busy till almost the end of October. I am not doing tbr lists because, well, what’s the point? I am not going to keep to them anyway.

    1. Sounds like a busy time for you as well! Hope you have a wonderful October Michael. I remember you mentioning not doing tbrs before. I was debating about it however I will continue for now 🙂

  8. My September is zooming by mostly because of tennis, carpools, and swimming. I need to reread Six of Crows. I have to read Schwab’s first series on the magicians. I’ve been on the waiting list for Crazy Rich Asians since I had seen the movie but I’m having doubts about reading the book. I enjoyed the movie; I just may want to leave it there.

    1. Sounds like you are having a busy month as well! I loved A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab and I hope that you will enjoy it as well. Personally I didn’t like Crazy Rich Asians (the book version) but I know other bloggers who loved it so don’t let my review dissuade you 🙂 wishing you a wonderful October!

  14. So much is happening in your life! All your plans sound so so fun, though, which is always wonderful 😊 And also, I think this is the first time I’ve read all of the reviews you’ve mentioned in a wrap up post, so yay! (I love all of your reviews for this month, btw 🙂 I’m really excited to read more about your Shapeshifter story, and best of luck with prepping for Nanowrimo! I feel like November is such a hectic time of the year already (holidays + prepping for finals, etc.) and adding writing every day to that makes the month absolutely crazy — but at least we have the blogging community to remind us that we’re all suffering together for one month 😂

Also, thank you SO SO MUCH for featuring my ebook ahhh!!! 😆 I feel so honored… and I hope you enjoy reading A Writer’s Revelation if you have time to in the future. I hope you have a wonderful month of October!

    1. Hi Zoie!! Thank you for your encouragement. You are always so sweet 🙂
Haha yes November tends to be a hectic time and I don’t always find the time for Nanowrimo however this year seems like a possible go for me so I am going to give it a shot! Does this mean you are doing Nanowrimo as well?
I am looking forward to reading A Writer’s Revelation although I still haven’t had the chance to read it yet 🙂 I think that’s awesome that you’ve posted it online. I will need to find the courage to do that with my own novel in the future 🙂

      1. I wasn’t planning on doing Nanowrimo, but now that you’re asking me, I’m tempted to just hop in on the writing wagon! I’ve done Nanowrimo once before, but I didn’t know anyone else who was doing it at the time. It seems so fun to be a part of sharing writing stats and lamenting about how stressed we are for an entire month, so I might just join in on Nanowrimo! 😋

And if you ever chose to put any of your WIPs up, please announce it! I would love to read your stories & fangirl over them! 😊

      2. Hello Zoie!
That’s awesome to hear that you might be joining in on Nanowrimo. I’m the same as you in that I’ve done it a few times, but I never knew other writers before, so I am definitely super excited this time around. I think it’ll be a fun experience 🙂 Let me know if you make up your mind! ❤

  15. Hahaha I totally get what you mean about the life-work dynamics… To be honest, both in my case resemble the Barney gif 😂

I’m sorry to hear Crazy Rich Asians didn’t grip you but at least Wildcard was cool enough and SoC/CK certainly made up for any disappointment that may come your way in the future! I’m in the same situation as you (only about 12 books behind? Ooops) so I might modify my goal as well 😂 That’s a lot of Schwab there on your TBR! Me likey 😀 I need to read City of Ghosts this October (Halloweenesque reads after all) or else I’ll scream.

Massive congratulations on your engagement, by the way!!! Unless I’ve already said this, in which case totally ignore me because my brain and memory suck bad. I’m glad the preparations are underway and looking sharp 🙂

Best of luck with everything next month (including NanoWrimo) because it sure sounds like a busy busy month! I’m sure you’ll be fine, though – grab life by the horns and tell it who’s boss!! Everything else will come naturally 🙂

    Amazing post, Sophie ❤

    1. Haha yes Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom were really amazing and made up for the less amazing books that I’ve read this month. I zoomed through Vicious and now I am reading Vengeful. VE Schwab is awesome and one of my favs 🙂 Looking forward to hearing what you think about City of Ghosts!

Thank you for the encouragement ❤ Sounds like it is a busy time for you too. Hope everything goes well for you and that you have a wonderful October 🙂
