Six of Crows // A fast-paced & addictive YA fantasy novel

Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of MINI-REVIEW-10

Hello everyone!

I have to admit that I was hesitant about Six of Crows because of the hype around it, but after reading Marie’s amazing review about this book, I decided that I HAD to read it. As soon as I started listening to the audiobook, I could not put it down!

23437156Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price–and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can’t pull it off alone…

A convict with a thirst for revenge. A sharpshooter who can’t walk away from a wager. A runaway with a privileged past. A spy known as the Wraith. A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums. A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes.

Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz’s crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction—if they don’t kill each other first.

I loved the characters. Inej earned her nickname as the wraith among the Dregs: silent, deadly and to be feared. She was strong willed and independent, but loyal to her friends. Kaz was the leader of the Dregs. He was secretive, he carried a cane and hid his hands inside gloves. He told no one about his past. He was young but jaded with a conniving mind. I also loved the other characters, including Matthias, Nina, Jesper, and Wylan, who all had distinct personalities with strengths, flaws, and pasts that shaped who they became.

Despite working together to accomplish this heist, each character had their own agenda and not all of them aligned with the goal of the group. I loved watching the group dynamics evolve in this novel. Each character had fears and vulnerabilities which they would confront later in the novel. No one was perfect but that was what made them lovable. The fascinating characters were what kept me flipping the pages, wanting to find out what happens next.

I can’t stress how much I loved the chemistry in this book: between both the romantic and platonic pairings. I loved that the subtleties in the romantic couples- they were slow-burning and didn’t take over the entire book. I loved the dialogues between the characters, what they chose to say and not say, and the tension between them that made me want to keep reading.

The plot was nothing short of amazing. I loved the simple premise: six outcasts working together to accomplish an impossible heist. However the book was not without plot twists. Just when I think I made a correct prediction, everything turned upside down! I also loved the world which is similar to our own, maybe a century or two back- think merchants, ships, pocket watches- and a dash of magic.

The quick pacing in Six of Crows kept me engaged. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a short book. It was even kind of long by my standards. But it felt short and by the time I reached the last chapter I didn’t want it to end! Once it hooked me in the beginning, I didn’t want to put it down. The chapters didn’t necessarily end on cliffhangers but kept raising questions that wanted me to keep reading on.

I loved the audiobook. Different narrators were chosen for each character and they all did an excellent job. I tend to listen to audiobooks when I do chores, like cooking, dishes and when I walk my dog. I know I am listening to a good audiobook when I am actively searching for chores to do haha 🙂

The Bottom Line: 4/5 stars!

Six of Crows is a fast-paced character-driven YA fantasy novel that is hopelessly addictive. Once you start you will not want to stop reading until you finish this book (and the next one.)

  2. Yay for finally reading this book! Hype can truly be a scary thing, I think it’s why I’m putting off some really popular series 😀 I think it depends on what makes a book addicting, I generally love engaging plot more, but in some rare cases I keep reading because I’m already too involved with the characters haha!

    1. I avoid popular series for the same reason haha. There are some hyped books from last year that I barely even hear about any more. Usually I wait until the dust settles before deciding to pick up a hyped book 🙂
I agree that an engaging plot is super important! One of the reasons why I loved Six of Crows is that the plot kept on moving and there was no boring moment 🙂

  4. Brilliant review for this book Sophie, and I am so glad you loved Six of Crows despite being hesitant because of the hype (there is a lot of hype but it’s all well deserved right?) This is one of my favourite duologies (I can’t wait for you to read and review Crooked Kingdom) and I feel like the main reason is because of the characters. There’s no other book with characters like there are in Six of Crows, the relationships we’re all incredibly developed and kind of heartbreaking in their own ways, and I feel like every other page I was left in awe of how Kaz’s mind actually worked. Seriously I’m surprised he wasn’t ruling Ketterdam when this book opened. 😀
    Great review. 🙂 ❤️

    1. I think the hype is absolutely deserved!!! The characters are definitely the highlight. It is amazing that the characters are all well-developed and relatable even though there are 6 of them. Usually I prefer single POV to multi POV but I think seeing the story through multiple POV worked in this novel. Haha yes Kaz’s mind works in amazing ways 🙂 I am looking forward to reading Crooked Kingdom really soon!!

      1. Yeah I get what you mean, normally for me multiple POV chapters can be a bit hit or miss because there are always one or two characters who get pushed to one side, but that wasn’t the case with Six of Crows at all.
Personally I preferred Crooked Kingdom to Six of Crows so I’ll be interested in seeing what you think of it. 🙂

      2. Yes I don’t usually like multi POV books however it worked well in this book, especially since there are many scenes where characters are doing different things or in different situations. I feel like it also helped me get to know the characters better. Another multi POV book that I loved was Emergency Contact 🙂
I just got the Crooked Kingdom audiobook so I think I’ll start listening to it today! Definitely excited to find out what happens next 🙂

      3. It added to the character development as well, when instead of just reading about the characters from a third person POV, or one person’s POV you got an inside glimpse from all of them.
Yay, at least you can jump into it straight away, I had to wait for it to actually be released and the wait was unreal! 🙂

  8. OH MY GOODNESS YES FINALLY!!! It’s been two years since I’ve read this book and I *still* get super excited when I see people’s reviews for it. I’m so glad you loved Six of Crows, and I hope you get around to reading Crooked Kingdom soon (because that’s when things get even more crazy and amazing and tense in the story 😊). I love the banter between Kaz’s crew, the relationships, the world-building, all the characters’ backstories… this book is just an utter YA masterpiece. 😍 Great review, Sophie! Thanks for giving me another excuse to fangirl about SoC 😋

  13. Ah, this book. So happy that you too got to read and enjoy it! I totally agree that reading it felt like it was shorter than it really was. One thing that I also impressed me was how much work the author evidently put into writing it. That world building was NEXT LEVEL.
