Celebrating 1 year of blogging // Answering your bookish questions!

Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of MINI-REVIEW-5

Hello everyone!

Thanks to everyone who participated in my first-ever blogging Q&A! You guys asked a lot of very good questions. To be honest, some of these are hard and I had to think long and hard about the answers. I am so excited to share this post with you!

It’ll be a super huge post if I answer all these questions at once, so I will be dividing this Q&A into two separate posts. Today I will be answering questions about books and reading.

Blog_div2

Which book character do you relate to most? (Kristin @ Kristin Kraves Books)

30653853

When I first read about Molly from The Upside of Unrequited, I thought “WOW, she is exactly like me!” We are both quiet, sensitive, and open-minded. And we both have a passion for DIY 🙂

Which is your favourite book from the past year? (Alexis @ Arguably Alexis) / What is the best book you’ve read since you started blogging, the book you’d get everyone in the world to read if you could? (Beth @ Reading Every Night)

19063

The Book Thief is my favourite of the books that I’ve read this year. It is also my favourite book of all time, and I would definitely recommend this to anyone with a beating heart!

What is one book you’ve discovered thanks to blogging that you ended up loving to bits? (Marie @ Drizzle and Hurricane Books) / Which book surprised you the most? (Miscellany Pages)

Oh it’s hard to name just one! However I will pick the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before series which I enjoyed from beginning to end. I would not have known this series if not for the rave reviews from the bookish community.

This is also the series that surprised me the most. Judging by the cover and the Goodreads summary, I’d expected To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before to be a light-hearted read without any depth, but it proved to be far beyond that.

What is the one book you never get tired of? (Hope)

giphy6

I could reread this series again and again!

What is your opinion on adults reading YA? Do you feel like you’re able to pick apart stories deeper than most teens reading the same book, simply due to you having more life experiences & wisdom? What pulls you towards YA books? (Zoie @ Whisked Away By Words)

Personally I love reading YA despite being an adult. I am having so much trouble thinking of an answer to this question, because I love a variety of YA books for lots of different reasons! There are YA books that are light-hearted and easy to read, and there are others about heavier topics which make me cry and think (but mostly cry).

I don’t feel that I read more deeply into YA books now that I am an adult. However I do think I have a healthy skepticism towards books and have a low threshold for unrealistic scenes and plot points. Not sure if it is because I am older or because I am me lol 🙂

What I do love is that despite being older, I can still relate to the characters in the YA books that I read. I also love escaping from plain old regular boring adult life. Why read a book about being an adult when I want to, well, take a break from adulting?

What is a quote from a book that resonated with you? (Zoie @ Whisked Away By Words)

It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities. – Albus Dumbledore

I love this quote. It reminds me that determination and persistence is what determines success, not just genius and talent. This motivates me to continue working hard towards what I want to do.

What is a book that truly made you love reading? (Kelly @ Another Book In The Wall)

BSC_1_Kristys_Great_Idea_original_cover

Do you ever remember graduating from picture books to “chapter” books? The first “chapter” book that hooked me was the Baby-Sitter’s Little Sister series, and later the Baby-Sitter’s Club series. I remember anxiously waiting for the latest books to be released and ordering them through the school’s catalogue. (I’m dating myself, aren’t I? LOL)

What are some of your favourite fictional villains? And why? (Sieran @ A Wild and Stormy Mind)

giphy7

Jesse and James. They are just so hilarious- how can you not love them?

If you could meet any author, living or dead, who would it be? (Vanessa)

This is a super tough question. First of all, if I were to meet an author that I admire, I’m pretty sure that I would melt into a puddle on the ground! That being said, I would love to meet JK Rowling, VE Schwab and Stephen King.

Any movies you’d like to see adapted into a graphic novel? (Rebecca @ Bookishly Rebecca)

room_282015_film29

I loved Room the movie. Although this was initially based on a book, I think it could also be adapted into a graphic novel told from a child’s point of view.

What bookish world would you love to travel to or live in? (Beth, The Orangutan Librarian, & Marie)

giphy8

Hogwarts! Learning to make potions, do spells and play Quidditch in the evenings? I’m sold 🙂

If you could become best friends with any character, who would you choose? (Kat @ Life and Other Disasters)

the-perks-of-being-a-wallflower

Hmm… I’ll go with Charlie from Perks of Being a Wallflower who is so sweet and kind.

Would you rather live inside your favourite book or have characters from all books except your favourite ones visit you in our world? (Kat @ Life and Other Disasters)

My favourite book is The Book Thief, which portrays a unforgiving time in history that is not a world that I would want to live in. So by exclusion I would rather have characters from the other books comes visit me here in my world!

How would you answer some of these questions? 🙂

  1. Oh, I so understand you not wanting to visit The Book Thief. Humanity was at a low point during that time, even if the characters are as precious as they come. I keep referring to Max as one of my book husbands.

    1. Max is such a brilliant character. I love all of the characters in The Book Thief- they are all so relatable and it is so hard to pick a favourite! However I really adore the friendship between Rudy and Liesel 🙂

  10. These are brilliant answers to these questions Sophie. 🙂 I am so pleased to see The Book Thief as your favourite book from the past year/since you started blogging, it’s such an incredible story (also I agree with for answer for the last question I’d rather live in any world but Germany during WW2.) 🙂
I also discovered Jenny Han thanks to blogging (I still need to read the last book but I’ll get to it one day I’m sure. I’ve heard good things.)
I would love to meet J.K. Rowling, I feel like with HP she definitely most of our childhoods right? So who wouldn’t want to meet her? 🙂
Again great answers to these questions, and great post as well! 😀 ❤️

    1. The Book Thief is such an amazing book and I am so glad to have finally read it this year.
I absolutely loved Always and Forever which was a brilliant end to the series. Hope that you’ll enjoy this one when you get to it 🙂 I am also looking forward to reading Jenny Han’s other books.
Yes HP was a big part of my childhood (and I guess also my adulthood since I am rereading it now haha…) Thank you Beth ❤

  12. Here are my answers to some of the questions:

Which book character do you relate to most?

It’s too hard to just pick one, but a character who was particularly memorable to me was Tobias from Animorphs. He’s an outcast, loner, dreamer, and is also fond of dinosaurs and extraordinary events. To this day, I still don’t understand why Tobias was the only human main character who was thrilled when an alien came down to Earth; everybody else was kind of scared or spooked out, lol. Wow, I would love to come face to face with an alien species.

What is your favorite book from the past year?

The Terrors of Wonder by Daniel Strasel. I almost gave this book six stars out of five, but lowered it to five stars because something sad happened that I didn’t like, lol! But aside from that, I really loved the plot, dialogue, characters, themes, and most of all, the sci-fi world of this story. Plus, it’s constantly funny!

What is the one book you never get tired of?

Probably The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot. There are sections in the book that are so emotionally intense, as well as profound and meaningful. These psychologically gripping moments are branded in my memory forever!

I might as well answer my own question, haha. My favorite fictional villain of all time, has got to be Flamineo from the play The White Devil by John Webster. Flamineo is so evil, yet he is super eloquent and uses so much metaphorical language. Even right before he dies, he’s so theatrical that I love him. (Hope that wasn’t a spoiler. He’s the villain in a 17th century play, so you would expect him to die, right?)

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hello Sieran! I enjoyed reading your answers 🙂
I haven’t read Animorphs though Tobias sounds like an interesting character that I would like as well. Personally I am 100% sure that there is an alien species out there. The universe is so vast, so there are definitely signs of life out there!
Wow almost a 6 out of 5! Glad to hear that you enjoyed this book. I haven’t heard of it before but it definitely sounds interesting 🙂
The Mill on the Floss seems like a book that I want to read one day! One of my goals this year is to read more classic fiction.
Lol Flamineo sounds like an awesome villain. I love it when villains have personalities (other than being… villainous lol).

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Yeah I think it would be arrogant to think that only planet Earth has sentient species, haha. I definitely think there are aliens.

What are some classic authors you enjoyed reading from?

        Flamineo is awesome sauce!!! 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      2. To be honest I probably don’t read classic fiction enough! I really enjoyed Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      3. There was a period of time when I read almost exclusively classic fiction. 😂 Such that I had very little experience with 21st century-written books, except for YA and middle grade. So I had a hard time relating to some things my writer friends were saying, since they were discussing mostly modern adult novels. Since 2016, I’ve read a ton more modern adult novels, though the vast majority of them are LGBT romance. 😂

I haven’t read Rebecca yet, but I would like to! Omg Catcher in the Rye was the funniest literary classic I have ever read!!

Haha believe it or not, I’ve become less interested in reading the classics nowadays, because almost none have queer or trans protagonists (I’m really obsessed with LGBT romance, haha). And I also want to make sure I don’t read overly sad stories right now, because some stressors in my current life are depressing enough. :/ There are happier classics, though, of course.

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Sounds like you’ve read diverse genres of fiction which is great!
I enjoyed Rebecca, which is a beautifully written novel. Hope that you get a chance to read it some time 🙂
If you are gravitating towards certain genres right now, listen to your heart. Books are meant to be enjoyed, at the end of the day.

      5. It’s awesome that I can read whatever I like now. I enjoyed most of what I read during my English lit program (I was a double major in English lit and psychology), but I wasn’t hyper enthusiastic about all of the works we read. It’s great to have more freedom now.

        Liked by 1 person

      6. Definitely 🙂 I think I am worse when it comes to assigned readings. Anything that I am forced to read and analyze seems less fun. For example I read Othello, Macbeth, and The Outsiders in English class in high school. Although in retrospective all of these books are good I just didn’t enjoy them at the time. Maybe that was the teenager in me haha 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      7. Hmm yeah I think I’m very lucky in that respect. Drama and music in school sucked out the fun from drama and music for me. However, analyzing works in English classes (both high school and university), actually did not make me enjoy them less, lol. The analyses interestingly helped me enjoy them more! There was this Nobel-prize winning book that bored me to tears when I first read it. But after discussing it in class, I could see its merits, and it wasn’t as boring anymore.

        Liked by 1 person

      8. I actually know what you mean, Sieran. I take back some of what I said – I think I should give high school English some credit! I do appreciate that we analyzed Macbeth and Othello (and other Shakespeare novels) to death. Because of this I understand the deeper meaning behind the story and specific passages. I am an extremely impatient reader, so otherwise I would not read a book twice! I probably would have skimmed through these Shakespeare plays, thought “huh nice story” and moved on haha 🙂

  17. Harry Potter all the way! We’re taking the girls to Disneyland in Anaheim, CA and to Universal Studios for the first time this summer. I can’t wait to buy my wand at Harry Potter World. I used to read many chapter, teen romance books in high school until my mum introduced me to historical romance; I was then addicted to it.

  19. Aaaah thank you for answering the questions I submitted! The Harry Potter series has some of the best, wisest quotes that I’ve encountered in my childhood, and the majority of them definitely come from Dumbledore — so I love the quote that you picked out 😊

And on the topic of Harry Potter, I don’t think I will ever grow out of wanting to attend Hogwarts either. I haven’t found another bookish world that tops the magic and wonder of that school, but for now, I’ll have to deal with normal classes and normal homework assignments 😇

I enjoyed reading all of your answers! Congrats again on your year of blogging! 😋

You’re right. I don’t think I will ever find a bookish world that will intrigue me as much as the one from HP!
