Days of Blood & Starlight // A jaw-dropping sequel

MINI-REVIEW

Hello everyone!

Days of Blood & Starlight was a book that I buddy read with Beth @ Reading Every Night! You know the thing with me and long books* (as in, I am terrified of them.) Thank you Beth for motivating me to pick up and finish this one- It was definitely worth it!

*I consider anything more than 400 pages to be a long book (yes- low threshold LOL)

12812550Art student and monster’s apprentice Karou finally has the answers she has always sought. She knows who she is—and what she is. But with this knowledge comes another truth she would give anything to undo: She loved the enemy and he betrayed her, and a world suffered for it.

In this stunning sequel to the highly acclaimed Daughter of Smoke & Bone, Karou must decide how far she’ll go to avenge her people. Filled with heartbreak and beauty, secrets and impossible choices, Days of Blood & Starlight finds Karou and Akiva on opposing sides as an age-old war stirs back to life.

While Karou and her allies build a monstrous army in a land of dust and starlight, Akiva wages a different sort of battle: a battle for redemption. For hope.

But can any hope be salvaged from the ashes of their broken dream?

What I Liked

  • Imaginative world building and storytelling! Love the world of Eretz and the concept of chimera and angels.
  • The plot keeps you guessing (I did not see the plot twists coming!)
  • No middle book syndrome here! There is build up to a conflict, and there is a real danger and threat.
  • The characters! Although Karou and Akiva draw my sympathy, for me, the shining personalities are the minor characters. My favourites are Zuzanna, Liraz, and Hazael.

What I Disliked

  • Abrupt ending. As I turned the final page, I swear I was expecting 100 more pages LOL. (This could be the format of the eBook: You know how some books include a few chapters of the next book in the series at the end? I thought that that was part of this book, so I totally underestimated my progress.) However, this makes me look forward to the next book in the series.
  • [Unpopular opinion alert] I’m feeling ambivalent about Laini Taylor’s writing style. There are long sentences and words I didn’t know existed. I love that I am pushing the boundaries of my vocabulary… but I wonder if simpler is better. Is anyone else feeling this way??

The Bottom Line: 3.5/5 stars!

Filled with amazing world-building and endless plot-twists, this is a brilliant sequel to Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

  1. Now, that’s a interesting question! I thought I had an easy answer but when I tried to write it down, I discovered this is not the case. I don’t feel overwhelmed by long books but even the shortest book can seem very long when it’s not engaging. So for me it’s not a question of physical length but rather one of perceived length. And this led me to the realisation that when it comes to long books (let’s say more than 500-600 pages) I am very picky. I only get them if I am more less sure that I am going to like them whereas I am more risky with shorter books (esp. in the 200pp area).

    1. You are absolutely right! I haven’t thought of it this way but you bring up a good point about perceived length and actual length. There are some long books that feel short because they are so engaging, and short books that feel long! I also feel the same way about being more picky about reading longer books because of the time commitment.

  2. Lovely review, Sophie, I’m so glad you enjoyed this book 🙂 I have read the first book in the series, but if I liked the world’building, I wasn’t… entirely convinced to pick up the second book, for some reason. I’m kind of encouraged to do so now, thanks to your review, I’m so glad this book doesn’t have that middle book syndrom 🙂 x

    1. Thank you Marie ❤
Yes I thought this book kept me interested throughout and definitely filled with plot twists, despite being the second in the series. Hope that you will enjoy this book when you get a chance to pick it up 🙂

  3. Great review Sophie, I’m glad you’re loving the series so far and glad I could help motivate you to pick this one up as well (I get what you mean about being a little hesitant when it comes to long books, I’m the same which is the reason I haven’t picked up the fifth Game of Thrones book yet).
I’m sorry you’re still not a massive fan of Laini Taylor’s writing, I guess it isn’t for everyone but it seems like you’re still enjoying the world and the story and the characters which is great to hear. I loved learning more about Eretz in this book, and I will say in book three Liraz really does become my favourite secondary character, so I can’t wait to see what you think of her in Dreams of Gods and Monsters if she’s already one of your favourite side characters in this book.
    Again great review! 😀 ❤

    1. Hello Beth!! ❤
Yes I am very impressed by the world building and the characters in all of Laini Taylor's books so far. Maybe her writing will grow on me haha 🙂 I am looking forward to reading the last book!
By the way, have you started Obsidio?!

      1. Maybe it will, I’ll certainly keep my fingers crossed that’s the case but either way I hope you love the last book.
Yeah I read and finished Obsidio. The second I had it in my hands I started reading and didn’t stop until the last page. Have you read it yet? 🙂

      2. Definitely looking forward to see how this series ends 🙂 Yes Obsidio is awesome so far! There was one moment that I initially thought was very similar to the first book (where AIDAN went and did his own thing) but it was different. I like what they did with AIDAN’s character 🙂 He is still my favourite in this series so far!

      3. Yeah AIDAN has changed a lot since the first book but a lot of its priorities are still the same. I was still a little surprised by that scene but at the same time it just kind of fit in with what AIDAN was programmed to do you know?
Still my favourite character too! 😀

      4. Yes AIDAN did change quite a lot. He is developing feelings even though he is a computer 🙂 I am almost done now, at the part where they fight it out at the end. Excited to see what happens, but scared that some characters will die!? (Just a feeling that I have lol…)

      5. Yeah it was kind of subtle so you saw those feelings develop but it wasn’t like they were just thrown in our faces.
Ohh, not long to go then, I really hope you love the ending (I did), and yeah hard not to worry about the characters when so many have died so far. 🙂

      6. Yes I am almost done! It sounds like the ending is satisfying so far which is good!? I am excited to see how it wraps up, but also sad that the series is ending!

      7. That is good, and yeah as much as I loved Obsisio I was sad the series was coming to an end. 🙂

      8. I loved the ending of the book! (Got a bit worried for some of the characters there!) Yes I feel a bit sad to say goodbye to the characters, but that’s what rereads are for, right? 🙂

      9. Yeah I was terrified when I read that scene (I’m gonna assume we’re talking about the same scene and the same characters).
Definitely, and this will be a series I end up re-reading for sure. 🙂

      10. Haha yes 🙂 I think at one point I thought that almost everyone would die and this would be a tragedy! Glad that it wasn’t the case 🙂 At the same time I had faith that the characters were able to get out of this sticky situation alive because they always did haha 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      11. I had that thought too, but then I thought what would be even worse is if everyone died and there was just one person left alive at the end. That would be a different kind of heartbreaking. 🙂

      12. Yes that would be a heartbreaking ending. Glad that the series ended well 🙂

  4. I didn’t like this one much. I hated how Karou was such a kickass in Book1 and then in Days of Blood and Starlight, she was a total wimp! 😡😡😡

    1. Yes!!!! I know what you mean! She had some indecisive moments where I was like, “come on lady, get on with it” lol… Glad to hear from someone who also feels this way 🙂

      1. Me too 😊 I was so totally disappointed with her. I kept thinking, “where did that kickass heroine in book 1 go?”

  5. I feel intimidated with long books in general, they take so much time and commitment! I also more often find cases of middle book syndrome rather than not, and unfortunately I think this book is one. The plot itself is good as it raised the stakes, but I agree, Laini’s writing in this book became more purple prose and it drags the book for such a long time. I honestly thought if she writes in straightforward way, almost 100 pages of this book can be trimmed…

    1. Yeah… I did feel this way about Laini’s writing as well. It is very descriptive and some people love it, but not me haha. I agree that this book is a bit long-winded and could benefit from some trimming.

  8. I read Laini Taylor because she is hella creative but her writing doesn’t suit me either… I think its really heavy and needs lots of editing… from interviews I’ve read she’s in hotel rooms finishing her manuscript the day before she turns it in… so I don’t think she gets much editing to be honest… I’m glad you seemed to enjoy this! ❤

    1. Haha yes I love Laini Taylor’s creativity but I feel the same way about her writing! It’s funny to imagine an author rushing to meet deadline (same as how we might feel about a project!)

  9. So agree that this didn’t suffer from middle book syndrome and I love the world building in this one! And I love the characterisation. I think it’s fair enough if you’re not totally into Taylor’s writing style- it’s not for everyone! Great review!

    1. Yes the world building and characters in all the Laini Taylor novels that I’ve read so far have been amazing 🙂 Thank you!
