Warcross // An addictive sci-fi read!

Copy of Hello-4

Do you guys believe in second chances? Legend #1 was underwhelming for me, so I was not enthusiastic about reading another book by Marie Lu. However, after being encouraged by some of you guys out there, I decided to give Warcross a try. This book BLEW ME AWAY!!

For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

What I Liked:

  • SO action-packed. This book hooked me from page 1 sentence 1. I was never bored and always looking forward to reading the next chapter.
  • Endless plot twists!! Just when I thought I knew what was going on, everything changes.
  • The theme of AI vs human that sneaks its way into this novel.
  • Erika, who is fearless and badass, and yes she is a Chinese-American!! (++points right there! Haha *not biased at all*) One of my favourite parts was reading about Emika’s relationship with her late father. Although he passed, we see how his memories impact Emika and the decisions she makes.
  • The writing style, which is quick and smart, including just enough detail to be descriptive without being wordy.
  • The ending to this book in the series, which makes me want to fast forward a year just to be able to read the next book.
  • The concept of Warcross and how hacking is described in visual terms. This is probably not how hacking or programming works (not that I have any experience with either) but it makes reading about it understandable and interesting.

What I Didn’t Like (As Much):

  • The other characters are OK. Emika’s team members seem like cool people though we don’t know much about them.
  • I am on the fence about Hideo because he seems too perfect to be true, particularly early on in the novel. Can a 21-year-old really be a genius and a multi-millionaire and super, duper handsome!??! However he is also silent and aloof (which is totally my type :’) )

The Bottom Line:

Looking for an addictive YA sci-fi that will keep your eyes glued to the page from beginning to end? Look no further 🙂

What do you think of the child genius trope? (Yay or nay!?) Do you love a good plot twist? What do you think are the ingredients of a good beginning that hooks you right away?

  1. Agree with the visual concept of hacking and the whole computer technology being extremely visual. I am horrible at technology but Marie Lu decided it in a way that didn’t make me feel lost. The world that she created came alive to me. I was agree with the characters being okay. I wanted more about them for example the relationship with Asher and his brother! I can’t wait till the next book. Wonderful review 🙂

    1. Hello! Yes the visual description of hacking is pretty ingenious 🙂 Describing hacking and programming in any other way would probably be boring and slow down the plot 🙂
Yes I also wanted to learn more about the side characters, however, I have a feeling that there will be more in the second book 🙂
      Thank you ❤

  4. YAY I am so happy you loved this book, Sophie! I read it a little while ago and really, really enjoyed it as well. I didn’t expect that plot twist to happen at all, which made this a thrilling read for sure 🙂 I can’t wait to read the next book! 🙂

  5. Great review for this book Sophie, and again (because I know I must have mentioned this before) I am so glad you decided to give Marie Lu another chance and I am so so glad you loved this book! I thought Warcross was incredible, and I am there on wanting to fast forwards to the release of the next book so I can find out what happens next for Emi. I definitely didn’t see one of those plot twists at the end coming and it blew me away.
I do agree with you about the side characters, I enjoyed reading about Emi’s Warcross team but I really wish they’d been developed more because it felt lacking in this book. Finger’s crossed it’ll be part of book two right?
    Again great review. 😀 ❤

    1. Hi Beth! ❤
Yes I am so glad that I decided to read this book. It definitely hooked me from beginning to end 🙂
I felt the same about the secondary characters, in that they didn't have as much development as I would've hoped. However I do have a feeling that we will get to know them more closely in the second book! 🙂
      Thank you ❤

  6. I’ve yet to read a Marie Lu book, but Warcross might just be the one that draws me in. I love the sound of Erika and I like that there’s an emphasis on her relationship with her father, even if he’s not a big physical presence in the book.

    1. Hi Lois! I would highly recommend Warcross, which is my favourite book by Marie Lu so far (out of a grand total of two haha!) I also enjoy books where there is focus on family relationships 🙂

  8. I really, really liked Warcross so much to the point to where my cringey-self made so much book edits, and even made a fake magazine out of it, lol. Silent and aloof is also my type, but I felt like Hideo had no personality whatsoever. I have a love-hate relationship with the child genius trope, because it can be so interesting to read about if the author does it right (which Marie Lu did, btw), but than it can be so unrealistic at times. Anyways, great post Sophie!

    1. Hello Balie!
Yes I feel this way about Hideo as well. He just seems too good to be true (until about the last 5% of the book when it turns out that he is kind of evil!) The child genius trope is one of my pet peeves, because it is very very rare that a kid (even a really really smart one) would invent something so extraordinary that he gets famous for it and becomes a millionaire by age 21 :’) Usually they at least go to university first haha! However I do see what you mean in that it is fun to read about characters who are highly intelligent or talented!
      Thank you Balie 🙂

  9. This mini review perfectly sums up my thoughts on Warcross as well 🙂 Also, I remember loving Legend, but I read that such a long time ago that I just don’t know if I’ll love it as much if I reread it now.

Okay, and this might be a little spoiler, but you know that plot twist at the very end??? Am I the only one who sees a love triangle coming? There’s definitely a possibility for it, with the introduction of the new character… what do you think? 🤔

Overall, I loved the theme of AI vs. the human mind as well — it’s so relatable to our modern society and there’s so much you can think about while reading Warcross. I’m so happy you enjoyed the book! Can’t wait for the sequel to come out 😋 Great post!

    1. Glad that you enjoyed Warcross as well Zoie!
Hmmmm… Now that you mention it, I think a love triangle is possible! I am curious about the new character and what he’ll do in the next novel!
      Thank you Zoie ❤ 🙂
