February Wrap-Up!

Copy of Hello

Hello everyone!

Hope you guys had a great month!

It’s been crazy for me: new city, new apartment, new job, new coworkers, new friends, new pole studio. Everything around me is so, SO different.

But you know what?

In the midst of all of that…….. You guys stayed the same.

And I owe you all a BIG thank you 🙂

Anyway! Since this is the end of the month, it is now the time to think back and try to remember what I did for the last 4 weeks haha *goldfish memory moment* :’)

  • Read 9 books!?! (That’s a RECORD for me!!)
  • Wrote everyday (sometimes just one sentence… literally)
  • Joined a pole studio (YAY!)
  • Dabbled in DIY (photos coming up!)
  • ++ Sustainability (public transit! reusable shopping bags and containers! cloth napkins!)
  • Visited Salt Spring Island which was a super fun trip!! (photos coming up!)

This was an AMAZING reading month for me. First of all, I can’t believe that I read NINE books, which is unprecedented for me (usually I am sitting around the 5-6 books mark.) Of course, two are graphic novels and one is a short story which sped things along 😛

Secondly, there were many books that I enjoyed, that I couldn’t wait to read the next page of, that made me excited for my commute just to be able to read more.

Dear Martin is a breath-taking and poignant novel about gun violence and racism. I loved how concise and fast-paced this book was, and how it explored multiple point of views on this issue. Check out my review here.(★★★★.5/5)

Warcross BLEW ME AWAY! WHAT HAPPENED IN THE END!??!? Now I can’t wait for a year to pass so I can get my hands on the second book :’) Review coming up! (★★★★/5)

Talking as Fast as I Can is a super fun read from the actress who played Lorelai in Gilmore Girls. I loved the humorous and quirky voice of the writer, who made me laugh out loud. However, I didn’t watch Gilmore Girls or Parenthood, and I feel that I would’ve appreciated this book so much more if I did. (★★★/5)

The Problem with Forever is a slower-paced YA contemporary about letting go of the past and moving on. I loved the main character’s development, and it was inspiring to see her celebrating small achievements, like being able to speak a few words on her first day of school. However, the pacing was too slow for me, and everyone… talked… like… this… (I don’t mind the occasional ellipses but it is a pet peeve of mine when it is over-used!) (★★★/5)

Artemis is an action-packed science fiction about life on the moon. I am in LOVE with the world building and research that is behind this novel, and how REAL it all seems. And the MC is super badass! Check out my review here.(★★★.5/5)

We Were Liars is another book that took me completely by surprise at the end. I loved the writing style, which was smooth and powerful. Although I felt the beginning and middle were slow, I was captivated by the ending. (★★★/5)

Adulthood is a Myth and Big Mushy Happy Lump are the first two books in a collection of autobiographic graphic novels called Sarah’s Scribbles. Sarah is a introvert, bookworm, and a bit of an awkward penguin. Her comic strips (which started off as a webcomic series) are so relatable and humorous. (★★★★/5)

Remember Brokeback Mountain?! (The Oscar-winning movie about two gay guys in the mountains!?) I’ve always loved this movie, but it is the first time that I read the short story on which the movie was based. Annie Proulx’s writing is breath-taking and this short story is every bit as heart-breaking as the movie adaptation. I love this so much. (★★★★★/5)

  1. It sounds like a full, satisfying month! I think you did great! Here this month was all about the carnival so didn’t get much done, got a terrible cold last week but otherwise uneventful I’d say. I have fallen behind in my social media presence but tbh I don’t really care as long as I communicate with people (like we do here).

    1. Hello Michael!
Is the carnival a big event where you live? That sounds exciting! Hope that you are recovering from the cold. Social media presence is something that I struggle with too- it is tricky! I enjoy blogging the most since I like chatting with you guys as well 🙂

      1. I am better thank you! The carnival is celebrated widely and it is popular. Although taking place in the middle of winter doesn’t help most people go out and most kids are dressed. There are organised events where we all dress up. It’s fun !

      2. That’s great to hear that you are doing better 🙂 Is this the Patras carnival by any chance? Seems like a fun way for people to get together!

      3. Thank you Sophie! The Patras carnival is the most well-known but no I don’t live there. But you get the picture of how it’s like!

      6. Haha that sounds awesome 🙂 Did you make your own costume? Is this going to be on instagram?! What are other people dressed like?

        Liked by 1 person

      7. No, I am not uploading that to Instagram! But I ll see what I can do! There were many thematic groups like cowboys, mermaids, toy soldiers etc and of course children tend to dress like superheroes.

      9. Oh thank you! It is fun and yes it strongly reminds Halloween but more wide thematically. In the last few years we have started celebrating Halloween too.

  3. Sounds like you had a good month Sophie! 🙂 Certainly a busy one as well so the fact you managed to read nine books on top of everything else is brilliant!
I’m really glad to see you enjoyed Warcross, that was one of my favourite reads of last year and oh after that ending I can’t wait for the second book in the series. Also I really need to get around to Dear Martin soon, it’s at the top of my to-read list that’s for sure. 😀
Thanks so much for featuring my post, I’m glad you enjoyed it enough to feature it. I hope you have a great March too Sophie. 🙂 ❤

      1. Most of Marie Lu’s books have grabbed me from the first page but I think Warcross really was in a league of its own. 😀 I saw one of the twists coming I’ll admit, but the other took me completely by surprise as well.
I hope so to, and that’s all right.
        Thanks Sophie. 🙂 ❤

      2. Yes Warcross is my favourite Marie Lu book so far haha 🙂 I think you were one of the people who convinced me to give Marie Lu another chance, since I wasn’t sure that I liked Legend. However now I am so glad that I read this book! Thank you Beth 🙂

  7. What a great month you had Sophie!! 9 books is such an exciting accomplishment no matter that a short story helped you reach it. I… Happen… To…. LOVE… ellipses (AND exclamation marks, though not in book writing)!! Hahahahahaha, so that was the best thing I read it your post. Though its super cool how sustainable you are!! I’ll look for your review of Warcross, we agreed rating wise… ❤ Happy reading in March!! ❤

    1. Hello Dani! Lol! I kind of know what you mean about ellipses. I tend to use them quite a lot in my blog posts (I think there were at least 2 in this one haha) however I don’t like it when they are in books either. Same goes for exclamation marks! (Though I don’t think I see exclamation marks used often in books in general?)
Thank you Dani ❤ Hope you had a wonderful February and wish you a happy March 🙂

  8. It’s amazing that you were able to read nine books when you were so busy this month… it’s funny how things work out that way 😊 I’m so excited to hear what you have to say for Warcross! I read that book for a book club I’m in and we had so much to discuss, especially how technology is affected our lives. I’ve also seen of Sarah’s Scribbles around bookstores and the blogosphere — the books look adorable & seem like perfect reads to pull me out of a future book slump. 😋 I’m glad you had such an amazing February! Hope you have an even better March! 😄

    1. Hello Zoie! Thank you for your sweet message ❤ 🙂 It sounds like you enjoyed Warcross as well. It is such an exciting book full of plot twists! I liked how there is the theme of artificial intelligence which adds food for thought 🙂 I would definitely recommend Sarah's Scribbles – it is such a humorous and effortless read! Hope you had an amazing February as well 🙂

  9. Oh, I didn’t know Broke Back Mountain was based on a short story! I looooved the movie, so I’m definitely adding that on my TBR!
Congrats on 9 books! We both have a new record, YAY! 😀

    1. Yes! Having read the original short story, I think the movie is such a faithful adaptation and captures the feel of the story completely 🙂 It was a short read (only 40-50 pages I think) which I finished in one sitting since I enjoyed it so much 🙂 Hope you will like this one as much as I did!

  10. Wow, Sophie, you had such a brilliant reading month, despite being so busy, I’m so happy for you 🙂 I can’t WAIT to read your review of Warcross, I loved that book so much and it kind of took me by surprise as well, it was CRAZY. I’m so glad you also enjoyed We Were Liars, it was a wonderful book, I didn’t expect the endin either and it broke me hahaha.
I hope you’ll have an amazing month! xx

    1. Hello Marie! 🙂 ❤ YES Warcross was so crazy! I loved the fast pace from beginning to end, and I never got bored! I was so surprised by the plot twists toward the end haha (a good thing, because I love plot twists that I can't predict!)
Glad that you liked We Were Liars as well 🙂
Wishing you an amazing month ❤

      1. I’m so glad you couldn’t predict the plot twist, I heard that some people did and… when that happens, well, it takes away some of the fun for sure! 🙂

      2. Yes for sure- I love a good plot twist that isn’t predictable 🙂 it is a bit disappointing when the plot goes exactly the way we thought it would, doesn’t it?

      3. Oh yes, I have to agree. I feel like, now that I read more than ever, it gets harder for books to really surprise me, so when they manage to do so… that’s pretty amazing 🙂
