Artemis // A fast-paced sci-fi with a strong female MC

Mini

Hello everyone!

Do you guy remember Andy Weir, the guy who wrote The Martian? Which, by the way, was originally a self-published novel?! Artemis is Andy Weir’s newest novel, and it is a book that I’ve aspired to read in 2018. I enjoyed this book, and I am excited to share my review with you guys.

34928122Jazz Bashara is a criminal.

Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you’re not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you’ve got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent.

Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down. But pulling off the impossible is just the start of her problems, as she learns that she’s stepped square into a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself—and that now, her only chance at survival lies in a gambit even riskier than the first.

What I Liked

  • Jazz is a very badass woman. She is confident, smart and quick on her feet. She relies on herself and she works alone. Her character develops throughout the novel: She learns to trust her friends, and her relationship with her estranged father also grows.
  • The world-building is simply AMAZING. This novel is VERY thoroughly researched. It seems like the author has figured out the science and technology behind life on the Moon, and made it seem so believably real.
  • Love the diversity. Jazz is originally from Saudi Arabia and comes from a Muslim family. It is cool that there are pockets of Artemis where people of different cultures congregate, similar to neighbourhoods in real life.
  • Plot points are intricately interwoven with sharp twists and turns that keep you guessing.
  • Awesome audiobook performance.

What I Didn’t Like

  • There are many secondary characters who I don’t care much about. They just aren’t as cool as Jazz, and they don’t have much personality.
  • There is a LOT of scientific jargon. It’s good in that this is a highly scientific novel, and the technical details made it feel more realistic. However, sometimes I was just lost…
  • Because of the above, it was hard for me to get into the novel until halfway through.
  • Sometimes the dialogue lines made me cringe :’)

The Bottom Line: 3.5/5 stars

Artemis is a fast-paced and action-packed book with a strong female MC. You’ll love this novel if you are a fan of The Martian!

Have you read The Martian or watched the movie?! What do you think of jargon – is there a place for it in science fiction?

  1. Nice review, your points have confirmed my expectations of the book! I am a fan of the Martian, I have read the book and watched the movie (a very good adaptation). I like science jargon in books like that and I think it adds to the immersion. Of course, take my opinion with a grain of salt because I also read science and popular science books so I am quite accustomed to it.

    1. Thank you Michael 🙂 That is interesting to hear that you enjoyed the Martian movie. It’s been a while since I watched it, however, I remember that it was quite different from the book. Anyhow, if you liked The Martian, I’m absolutely certain that you will like Artemis as well! Yes, I agree that the jargon adds to the experience of reading a sci fi book, though it may be hard to understand. Without the scientific details, I start wondering if there’s enough research done haha 🙂

  2. The Martian is one of my favourite books and I have been meaning to pick up Artemis for such a long time now. Weir always does super stellar research that even NASA approves of. I remember reading about what he all looked for to create the Mars setting and except for the initial incident of the storm that would not really be possible on Mars, everyone said it was very accurate.

    1. Hello Kat! YES I am always so impressed by the amount of research and world building that goes into each of Andy Weir’s books. I am surprised that we’re not already on the Moon/Mars right now since he seems to have gotten it all figured out haha 🙂 That’s really cool that The Martian was quite accurate (I am not surprised!)

  3. I didn’t mind the jargon, because usually right after said jargon there was an “explain it like I’m 5” type explanation. So he throws something out that’s going way over my head, but just as it’s passing me by, he jumps up, grabs it, and says, “Look at it this way.”

    1. Hi JW! I do agree that jargon do have a place in sci fi as long as it is well-explained! As for Artemis, the explanations went a bit over my head at times (then again physics was never my forte haha). However I do feel that it adds to the world building aspect of the book and makes the setting feel more real 🙂

  4. Hi Sophie! I hope you’re doing well! x
I loved reading your review here 🙂 I haven’t read The Martian or that book, but I have to say that this one sounds interesting! I’m just a bit sad about all the scientific jargon, I feel like, because of that, I would have a hard time getting into the book…. I do not have a scientific mind, haha 🙂
    Lovely review! 🙂

    1. Thank you Marie ❤ 🙂 I am doing all right (just hanging in there haha…)
I am glad to not be the only one who feels that way about scientific jargon! When it gets too sciencey, I do feel like it is hard to get into a book.
Hope you are doing well too 🙂

      2. Aww thank you Marie ❤ That's sweet of you 🙂 I am just feeling super tired trying to do everything in a day (work, commuting, exercise, blogging and writing) and I feel guilty about not working on my WIP as much as I should. Maybe it's a blogger/writer habit haha- constantly feeling guilty about not doing enough :')

      3. Oh I understand the feeling :/ I would tell you not to feel guilty, but we both know how hard that is to do, ahah. I’m sure you will end up finding a rhythm that works out for you, doing a little bit every day, dedicating some days for your WIP and nothing else, for instance ❤ ❤ You can do this<3

      4. Thank you for your encouraging words Marie ❤ 🙂 Yes it is hard for us to not feel guilty about all the things we need to do haha :')

  5. Hi Sophie. 🙂
Great review and I’m glad you enjoyed this book for the most part as well. I’ve heard incredible things about The Martian, and some good things about Artemis as well so I have both on my to-read list (and one day I will get around to them both as well). Jazz sounds like an incredible character, but oh it’s a shame the scientific jargon made it kind of hard to get into this one. I’d likely have the same problem you did because if the world-building/setting is too complex I struggle with the story as well.
Have you read The Martian? (I’m assuming based on your review you have but I could be wrong). Did you think Artemis was a better read or not as good?
    Again great review, 😀 ❤

    1. Thank you Beth ❤ 🙂
Yes the world building is very complex, and it is evident that the author put a lot of thought into it. I think it also may be because I listened to the audiobook, which in general is harder (for me) to follow along than physical books 🙂 I read the print edition of The Martian- There was equally as much jargon but I found it easier to understand because I could always read a sentence again lol 🙂
It's hard to choose which book I liked better, since they are both great in different ways. The Martian was a more addictive read, however, I liked the MC's character development better in Artemis 🙂

      1. That’s all right. 🙂 ❤️
Yeah I do love books where the world building has been well researched but I feel like I’d struggle to follow even the print version to be honest. 🙂 Especially of you’re saying there was just as much jargon in The Martian.
Sounds like they both had their strengths, and either way seems like they’re both good books you enjoyed m, which is the main thing right? 😀

      2. Overall I think both were good reads, despite all the jargon haha 🙂

  6. Hey Sophie! Great review… I feel like you hit Andy Weir on the head! Scientific reality with great main character and world… but needs help letting go of the science that isn’t necessary and secondary development. Still not bad for 2 books! Love the sound of life on the moon though. ♥️

    1. Hi Dani 🙂 ❤
Haha yes, glad that I am not the only one who feels this way about Andy Weir's books! Although I appreciate the research behind the science aspect of this book, I feel that it would be easier to get into the story if there were less technical details. I do feel that the characters and dialogue are an improvement compared to The Martian, however. Thank you Dani ❤

  7. Great review, Sophie! ❤ I haven't read The Martian yet, but I've heard so many things about it, I borrowed it once from the library, but couldn't get into it because it was too slow. Maybe I'll have better luck with Artemis. ❤

    1. Hello Marta! I can see what you mean about The Martian – I do remember it as being hard to get into at first as well. However once the story gets going, it really gets going 🙂 The same is for Artemis. However I do recommend you give this book a try, maybe you will click with Jazz more than Mark Watney 🙂

  8. Nice review!

I haven’t read this book, but I heard that Jazz was a super unrealistic character from some other reviews?? BUT IT’S SO COOL THAT IT WAS ORIGINALLY SELF-PUBLISHED

    1. Hi Julianna 🙂 I can see how other readers came to that conclusion. Jazz is super intelligent and resourceful, so I can see how others view that as unrealistic.
Yes it is amazing that The Martian was originally self-published (and look at how popular it is now 🙂 )

  9. I think it’s so awesome that the Martian was originally self-published 😀 😀 I thought Jazz was very cool, loved the world building and thought the plot was great 🙂 But yeah it did take me a while to get into it too. Still, glad you liked it! Great review!
