2017 Wrap-Up: Books, blogging, writing, and life

2017

Hello everyone!

Whoa. I am a bit intimidated to write this post. It is one thing to wrap up a month but…….. an entire year!?! I am not even sure if I remember everything that happened this year, since I have a memory of a goldfish.

However, let’s have a crack at it and see how it goes!

Reading

Read 55 books! WHICH IS MORE THAN I’VE EVER READ IN A YEAR! Though there are many amazing peeps who read many more books out there (I don’t know how you guys do it), 55 books is still very very amazing for me :’)

Discovered some amazing authors, like Becky Albertalli, V.E. Schwab, and Jasmine Warga, who I will follow to the end of the Earth until the end of time.

Fell back in love with reading. I was a big reader back in elementary school and high school. Then something happened in university (academic journal articles and pharmacology textbooks, to be exact), and… I stopped. For a long stretch of time, I thought that fiction was fiction and that though I loved reading, books can’t help me in life. But I realized that I was wrong. Because in stories, we find ourselves and we become more accepting of other people.

Blogging

giphy7

Started a blog and STUCK TO IT. To be honest, I’ve had a few failed attempts at starting blogs in the past. This time around, because I discovered the book blogging community which made all the difference! I found some amazing blogs and met some awesome people that made me want to keep blogging!

Wrote 100+ posts!!! A week or so ago, I got an alert from WordPress congratulating me on 100 posts. And I thought, “What? It can’t be?!” BUT IT WAS!!

Blogged about some topics (bookish and otherwise) that matter a lot to me. Here are some of my favourite posts:

  1. Stereotypes in Fiction
  2. On Being an Introvert
  3. The Upside of Being Alone
  4. 5 Reasons to Pole Dance
  5. Come See China with Me

I’ve always been a quiet person, but in blogging, I learned more about myself 🙂

Writing

Edited a novel for the first time (and the second, and the third.) AND WOW, writing a novel is one thing, but PERFECTING it is a whole different beast.

Posted snippets of my novel on this blog. Which is a SCARY, SCARY thing at first, but hearing others’ feedback is something I grew to enjoy.

Learned the value of plotting and research.

Dscovered other writers through blogging. For once in my life, I realized that I am not writing in a vacuum, and that there are other people who love writing as much as I do.

Life

Drove across Canada (Toronto to Vancouver), which was a super DUPER fun road trip. And WOW, Canada is a beautiful country.

Travelled to Banff, Hawaii, and China. I can’t pick a favourite place: They are wonderful in different ways.

Prepared to move across the country, which involved job interviews, apartment hunting, and figuring out what is happening with my professional license (ultimate #adulting, you guys).

AND, last but not least…

I got engaged 🙂

And that’s all!

Of course there were a few things that I’ve set out to do in the beginning of the year that I didn’t get around to doing- books that I wanted to read, healthier eating and sleeping habits, home decorating, blog-renovating, minimalism… However, I accept that there is only so much that I can do with my time. In hindsight, I have no regrets 🙂

I'm so happy about how your novel is going, as well. Perfecting a novel isn't easy, but you never gave up and I am so happy and proud. Can't wait to read it someday 🙂
    Here's to an amazing 2018!! 🙂

    1. Hi Marie ❤ Thank you for your sweet comment! 🙂
Canada is a very beautiful place, and I do hope that you will have a chance to visit one day. Banff is one of the most beautiful travel destinations that I've visited- lots of nature and photo-worthy spots. Vancouver is a nice city to visit (I will actually be moving there very soon!) with lots of good food so I would recommend there as well!
Aww thank you for your encouragement for my novel ❤ I think I need to hear that. December has been a busy month, and I will need to get back to writing again 🙂
Wishing you an amazing 2018 as well!

      1. OH thank you for the recommendations! For now, we’re looking more at the East side of Canada, but Vancouver is a city I would LOVE to visit as well. Big city, close to nature… everything I love ❤
December is always a busy month, I guess. I hope you wil get back to writing in 2018 🙂

  5. Hi Sophie. 🙂 I get what you mean about it being a little intimidating wrapping up a year rather than a month, still at least it only comes around once a year right? 😀
It seems like you had a brilliant 2017 as well! Congratulations on getting engaged, and congrats on everything else you achieved this year as well. I’ve loved reading your posts so I’m really glad you discovered blogging and stuck to it as well.
Also I’ve loved reading about your writing and your WIPs, I completely get how scary it can be posting about your writing, I felt the same way when I post about my NaNo WIP, but I feel like it’s worth taking that leap in the end. 🙂
Great post, and I hope you have a brilliant 2018 as well! 😀 ❤

    1. Thank you Beth ❤
Yes it is worth taking the leap and posting my WIP! Because of the support I got from readers and other writers, I feel more confident in my writing. It is still terrifying to show my entire manuscript to someone however :') Small steps!
Hope that you have a wonderful 2018 too ❤

      1. That’s all right! 🙂 ❤
Oh I can't imaging showing my whole WIP to someone, but maybe if I keep posting small snippets I'll build up the courage to eventually show someone the whole thing. Small steps right. 🙂
        Thanks Sophie! 😀 ❤

  7. Awww congratulations on the engagement !! 💖
55 is an amazing number of books and I hope you enjoyed most of them.
That pharmacology comment is so relatable. When i had to take that class, it was the bane of my existence. I HATED it so so much and nothing stuck to my brain. But I thankfully passed and now have an easier time remembering drug names and what they’re for 🤣

Haha yes pharmacology is a difficult class and drug names are tricky, however now it is what I do on a daily basis (since I am a pharmacist).

      1. Yeah tbh now that I use them frequently in context, i have a better time remembering them. But when u had to learn them in bulk they were nearly impossible to remember haha.

      2. Yes agreed 🙂 It’s much easier to remember in a case-by-case basis!

  10. I’m so happy you fell back in love with reading again — I’ll have to learn from your experience and remember to read books that I love instead of letting school textbooks take over my life 😊 I can’t wait to read more about your progress with polishing your book and I hope 2018 will be another wonderful blogging year for you! 📚 😄

    1. In university, I read a lot of textbooks, so it was hard to force myself to read actual books for fun when I am not studying. However thinking back, there are ways to overcome that – such as listening to audiobooks or reading graphic novels, etc. Hope that you will embrace reading in your upcoming years 🙂
      Thank you Zoie ❤
