5 Reasons to Pole Dance

Warning: There are some pictures of, um, people on, um, poles. So if you are sensitive towards this type of content, please look elsewhere and come read my next post on Wednesday :’)

Hello everyone!

This is a post that I’ve been planning to write for a long, long time, but I didn’t because… well, even though I love pole dancing, it’s not something that I tell everyone about.

So, deep breaths :’)

giphy12

Around this time last year, I started (and fell in love with) pole dancing. This means that it is the one year anniversary of pole dancing for me. I thought that this would be a great time to write about this special hobby of mine.

First of all, maybe I will address some of the stigma that is out there about pole. When we think about pole dancing, we think about… well, stripping.

giphy14

In fact, there could be as much or as little stripping as you want. Some facts about pole dancing and clothes:

  1. It’s true that most pole dancers don’t wear much clothes. You actually need some skin on your belly and your thighs to grip the pole. Otherwise, you might just slide right off and hit your head or something.
  2. Pole dance competitions have strict rules about how much skin you can show and what moves are and are not allowed. These competitions promote pole dancing as an art form and as a sport.

Did you know that pole dance is now officially a sport? And that it might just become part of the Olympics in the near future?

Today, I want to tell you guys about why I pole dance, and why maybe you should try it out too.

1. Stay fit (and have fun!)

Before pole, my exercise routine was a combination of abs and cardio. Even though I didn’t like these exercises and they bored me, I made myself do them because I wanted to stay fit.

When I discovered pole, my life changed. Now I am excited for each and every lesson because there is always a new move to learn and a new challenge to overcome. Exercise suddenly doesn’t like exercise, and it is actually fun.

2. Become stronger.

Two years ago, I couldn’t even do a single push-up (seriously). Now I can do cool stuff like this:

I remember that time when I bought a 30-pound bag of dog food:

Cashier: [Looks at little Asian me with raised eyebrows] You need help carrying that?

Me: NOPE.

To prove myself, I picked up the bag without batting an eyelash.

3. Meet new friends.

I met some amazing people at my pole dance class. There are some misconceptions about who pole dances and how they should look like. In my pole dancing class, there are people of all ethnicities, ages, and sizes. It is an inclusive group where women can feel comfortable and sexy in their own skin, no matter our age and body shape.

(Although most of the pole dancers at our studio are women, there are men who pole dance as well!)

4. Love your body.

Growing up, I was never satisfied with the way my body looked. In high school, I dieted (a lot) in a way that was unhealthy for me. Even in university, when I had gained enough weight to be healthy, I always wondered if I should be thinner.

IMG_3684

At my pole studio, I am amazed to see women of all shapes and sizes being proud and happy with their body. As I gained strength, challenged myself, and learned new moves, I grew to love my body for what I can do.

5. Be the pole dancer that you want to be.

There are different kinds of pole dancers. Some pole dancers rock sexy moves and high heels, some swear by slow and flowy moves, while others love to show off their superhuman strength. Pole dancing can be whatever you want it to be.

    1. Thank you! I’d say go for it! I was nervous to try my first pole dancing class, but I am so glad that I did. It is so much more than what people think of when they think pole dancing- pole requires a lot of strength, flexibility, and hard work 🙂

      1. Yes i agree i am excited to start💕 are you flexible? Is there any chance you could do a blog post about exercises to increase flexibility?

      2. I am not naturally flexible, though it is something that I am working towards. Thank you for the tip! I might look into writing a blog post on this topic in the future. In the meantime, if you are working on your splits, this is a video that helped me lots:

  3. Oh man, this makes me want to try pole dancing! You pretty much described my current fitness routine and level: repetitive cardio and abs workouts and can barely do a push-up 😂. Pole dancing seems like a fun way to get stronger! People (as in you in those pictures) make pole dancing look so easy, but I can only imagine how strong and skilled you really are.

    1. Hello Belle!
Thank you for your sweet comment.
I would definitely recommend pole dancing if you are looking for a fun and challenging way to get fit! It takes some time to build strength, but you will get there if you keep working at it. Hope that you will give pole a chance 🙂

  4. This is such a great post, Sophie, I could feel your love for pole dancing there so much ❤ Also I love these pictures, it is amazing what you can do, I could never, ever hold a pose like that in the air???! That's crazy ahah. It's true that there is this, well, misconception, maybe, of pole dance being associated with strippers, I'm glad you're taking that stereotype down. You're making it look like a lot of fun for sure, I'd love to try someday 🙂

    1. Thank you, Marie ❤ We only hold the poses long enough to take the photo haha 🙂
People are always surprised to hear that I am taking pole dancing classes. When I show pictures of the moves that I learn in class, I can see their expressions change. It makes me hopeful that I am changing the way people think about pole. I know that my own perception of pole dancing changed when I watched my first pole dance performance 🙂
Hope that you will give pole a try one day Marie!

  5. Thank you for sharing your hobbies with us! Pole dancing is not always seen in a positive light so I have to congratulate you on writing about it and setting things straight.
Although all my internet acquaintances know about my hobbies, some can(and do) raise some eyebrows in the small town I live so I don’t go about advertising them.

    1. Hello Michael!
Haha yes I love setting people straight when it comes to pole dancing. People always give me “that look” when I tell them that I take pole dancing classes, but I always see their expressions change when I show pictures of what pole dancers actually do.
I know what you mean- it is too bad that not everyone is open-minded about our hobbies. I’d say we keep doing what we love to do 🙂

  6. I love this post Sophie, and I’m so glad you decided to write and post it as well. 🙂 My friend did a pole dancing class once (ages ago) and she said some of the same things you mentioned about it, how it’s just a great form of exercise and so much fun as well. She came away with so many bruises though so I wonder if maybe she did slide off the pole or something.
Your pictures are amazing Sophie, and I’m kind of in awe at how strong you must be to hold some of those poses. 🙂
    Again great post. 😀 ❤

    1. Thank you so much for your sweet comment, Beth ❤ That's great that it seems like your friend enjoyed pole dancing. Unfortunately, bruising is part of the pole experience, not because of falling, but because of how your skin presses against the pole. Some people bruise easier than others. I am known in the studio for having really really terrible-looking bruises haha, however they are getting better since my skin is getting used to it!
I was nervous about making this post, but now I am glad that I did. Thanks for your encouragement Beth 🙂

      1. That’s all right. 🙂 ❤
Oh she loved it, but ohh it sounds quite painful as well if you end up with so many bruises. Still I'm assuming this is the kind of thing where the bruises are worth it in the end, it certainly seems like there are plenty of benefits to pole dancing just from your post alone.
Sometimes it just takes that first leap of faith right? That's all right! 😀 ❤

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Yes it is a bit painful at times because of the bruises, but it is worth it for me. Now that I’ve been doing this for a while, I barely feel the bruises haha. It does take some leap of faith to get started, which I think is the same for any new activity or exercise as well 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      3. I guess after a while the bruises probably don’t hurt as much given you’re used to them, right? 🙂
Definitely the same, the longer you stick with it the more worthwhile. 😀

      4. Haha yes I think the bruises haven’t bugged me for a while 🙂 Yes, we should continue to do what we love!

  7. Wow, Sophie!! Thank you so much for sharing this with us!!! Those are DEFINITELY some really crazy moves you’re pulling off out there. I can only imagine what it all looks like in motion. I knew about pole-dancing as a sport/activity and always thought it was amazing. I mean… I don’t even think I can hold myself horizontally on a pole…. That must take sooooo much upper body strength. Personally I just stick to basket-ball. That’s where my passion is at. I’m really happy that you destroyed all misconceptions anyone could have with this post, and I’m even happier that you are happy practicing pole-dancing now!! 😀

    1. Thank you Lashaan!
These are actually kind of the beginner-intermediate pole moves. There are much, MUCH more awesome ones that I aspire to learn (like jade! and iron X!)
That’s great that you love basketball! That takes coordination and I bet it is great workout as well. It always amazes me how people can think so quickly on their feet and be in tune with the other team members. Personally I could never do team sports, which is one of the reasons I like individual activities like pole.
Thanks Lashaan! Hopefully I am changing people’s minds about pole, one person at a time 🙂

  8. Nice to hear more about this Sophie. Any form of excercise that is fun should be encouraged. I saw the last picture in one of your previous posts I think. You are clearly in great shape.
I’m like you – team sports give me the heebies. Ain’t gonna happen.

    1. Thank you Darren! I agree that exercise should be fun. And yes the thought of playing team sports is terrifying :’)

      1. By the way – my boss just asked if I would be up for a work trip to China next summer! I will be re-reading the account of your own visit! She could not remember exactly where the job is.

      2. That’s awesome! I’d be glad to know where in China you will be going to, because it is very different from one region to the next. A word of warning though – it is usually very warm during the summer in China (unless you are up north)!

  9. Well said, always so good to hear about other people making the most of such a wonderful sport too and helping to push the boundaries to help minimise the stigma associated with it

  10. This is such a great post. I was tempted to go to a pole dancing class at university but never went in the end, but I am continuously amazed by the strength and skill that goes into it. I’ve been looking to improve my fitness and while I can’t say I’ll end up pole dancing, it’s great to see just how effective it is not just as an exercise but as a way to build confidence in your body. 😀

  12. This is pretty amazing- it’s so incredible that you found a sport that makes you happy and actually makes you excited to exercise. I have to admit, I tend to just do cardio to stay fit and can’t say I actually enjoy it (though if I watch tv while going on an exercise bike I enjoy the tv bit lol 😉 ) But seriously, this is so impressive and it’s literally so cool!!!

    1. Thank you! Yes it helps to have an exercise that you enjoy. Haha that is a great idea to watch TV while doing cardio workouts- you get two things done at once 🙂
