October Wrap-Up!

Blog_monthlywrapup

Hello everyone!

How was your October? Is it me or did October disappear in the blink of an eye? However, I am proud of what I accomplished:

  1. Finished writing a novel that was ALMOST 150K (like, what!?) Thankfully, I was able to trim that down close to 100K :’) :’)
  2. Beta-read for the first time ever! DrumbeatΒ by A.M. Leibowitz was amazing!
  3. Read 5 books!
  4. Actually socialized, like, in real life, which is possible now that my book is done :’)
  5. Did some crafting! I painted a sign and a pair of wine glasses:

I read 5 books this month, which is not a record for me by any means! However, I am satisfied because a) I also did some beta-reading (see above), and b) I am very happy with the books that I read.

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files #1) (Audio) β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…/5

When Kady’s planet is invaded, she has to work together with her ex-boyfriend to save the world from a mind-bending infection, an evil mega-corporation, and an AI who has a mind of his own. This book had me on the edge of my seat from day one, and the audiobook version is amazing! Check out my review here.

Gemina (The Illuminae Files #2) (Audio)Β β˜…β˜…β˜…/5

Hanna and Nick as they try to protect Jump Station Heimdall from the assault from the BeiTech corporation.Β Hanna, Nick and Ella are very cool characters, and there are some epic plot twists as to be expected from the first book. However, although I enjoyed Gemina, it did not sweep me off my feet like Illuminae.Β

The Silver Lining Playbook (Print)Β β˜…β˜…β˜…/5

Pat returns home from the mental hospital, eager to reconnect with his estranged wife, Nikki. Everything changes when he begins to regain his memory about what happened, and as he meets the deeply odd Tiffany. There is also a LOT of talk about American football, which I did not care much for.Β On the other hand, I loved following Pat’s journey as he learns to let go of his past and comes to terms with his mental illness.

The Deal (Off Campus #1) (Audio)Β β˜…β˜…β˜…/5

Hannah is excellent at studying but she can barely get the guy of her dreams to notice her. Garrett needs to get good grades to continue playing hockey, but he is failing ethics. And so Hannah and Garrett strike a deal. Despite the occasional cheesiness, I loved watching Hannah and Garrett’s relationship unfold in this steamy novel.Β

The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Print)Β β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…/5

Charlie would rather observe the people around him than participate. In a series of letters, Charlie shares his observations in his freshman year by writing a series of letters to an anonymous friend. I absolutely loved the writing style in this book, which reminded me of Catcher in the Rye. This novel made me laugh and cry, and it is one of my favourites this year.

Here are some blog posts that inspired me this month!

Beth @ Reading Every Night shares her reasons for reading. No matter what kind of reader you are and what genre of books you read, I am sure you will find something that speaks to you in this post.

Ever wanted to figure out how to make sure you get a double-seat on the bus all to yourself? Check out the long-awaited Bus Papers (part 2) by Darren @ The Artsy Plantsman!Β (Warning: This might make you laugh so hard that you will cry.)

Swetlana @ Caffeinated Bookworm discusses an interesting and important question: Why do all characters in YA have to be attractive? I, for one, am strongly against flawlessly beautiful characters- In my opinion, a character doesn’t have to be good-looking to have a story to tell.

Do we, as readers, owe anything to authors? Check out this guest post by JW Martin @ Storeys of Stories. You can also visit his blog here.

Chances are, you already know Milly Schmidt. She is a blogger (and a writer!) with an ability to make everything funny. Check out this post where she talks a bit about herself.

Do you bullet journal? These beautiful bullet journal pages by Kelly @ Kelly’s RamblesΒ will amaze you.

  1. Congratulations on finishing your book. That is amazing!

I loved Illuminae but I have yet to read Gemina! I am so happy you enjoy Perks. Such a good book!

    1. Thank you Kristin!! Hope you will like Gemina πŸ™‚ Now that I’ve read it, I am so excited for Obsidio to come out!

  2. I hate to admit it but indeed October went out in a blink! Your month was so full it makes me feel I’ve done nothing! Highlight of my month was attending the FantastiCon in Athens. Between work and family and trying to podcast regularly I can’t say I ve done (or have time to do) much more.
Thank you for suggesting those blogs, they seem really interesting, I’ll be checking them!

    1. Yes Michael, it is scary how fast time flies! I think podcasting regularly is no small feat and that’s something that I could never do! Seems like Fantasticon was an amazing experience! The closest thing that I have done is attending an anime convention when I was in college. I am hoping to go to book conventions in the future πŸ™‚

      1. We used to go to book fairs but conventions are better in my opinion, more focused. Anyway we can’t afford anymore the trips to the big cities where they are held so I can’t really say what the situation is nowadays. But if you can, visit a couple of book conventions and see if they are worth it.

      2. Sometimes small and cozy events are nice as well πŸ™‚ I always feel that bigger events (although there are more things going on) feel less personable.
Yes I will visit a book convention one day πŸ™‚ I’ll have to look into that more!

  3. Congratulations again on finishing your novel, Sophie, this is such an amazing accomplishment – and you managed to cut so much of it all to get back to 100K ahah, that’s so great πŸ™‚
Yay for all the craft you did, these wine glasses look SO cool. I wish I had half the talent and patience to do these kind of things ahah πŸ™‚
I hope you will have a fabulous month, Sophie xxx

    1. Thank you Marie ❀
I am glad that you like the wine glasses! It was actually an event where an instructor teaches a group how to paint, so I had some guidance there! These types of events are becoming very popular in Canada. It is kind of a social event where people can bring their friends and families and do crafts together πŸ™‚
Hope you have an amazing month as well Marie!

      1. Ohh, that has to be so great. I think I’d really like to go to one of these events – I wish they did this here. Oh, well… I’ll just go to Canada, gives me an excuse to come (like I need any….:P) ❀

  7. Seems like you had a great month Sophie. Again congrats on finishing your WIP, and I’m amazed you managed to cut it down to 100K words. You trimmed like one third of your novel so wow that’s a lot of trimming. πŸ™‚
Also I guess this month the books you read were quality over quantity. πŸ™‚ I’m glad to see you enjoyed The Illuminae Files, though sorry to see that you didn’t enjoy Gemina as much as Illuminae (here’s hoping you’ll enjoy Obsidio more than both of them when it’s finally released). Thanks for featuring my post as well, I’m really glad you enjoyed it enough to feature it. I’ll have to check out the others you highlighted in your wrap up as well. Seems like plenty of great topics have been discussed. πŸ™‚
I hope you have a great November Sophie, happy reading and writing! πŸ˜€ ❀

    1. Thank you Beth ❀ The trimming was the most excruciating part! It is definitely easier to add than to take away when it comes to writing.
I have a feeling the Obsidio will be super epic, and I am so excited to read it! Hopefully I won’t forget Illuminae and gemina before it comes out, though that would give me an excuse to reread these books (the print version this time!)
Hope you have a happy November as well Beth! All the best for Nano πŸ™‚

      1. That’s all right. πŸ™‚ Oh I can imagine, plus you’ve got to be kind of attached to everything you write which must make it even harder taking you’re hard found words away.
I’ll likely be reading Illuminae and Gemina again before picking up Obsidio, it’s kind of any excuse really.
Thanks so much Sophie. πŸ™‚ ❀
