WIPPet Wednesday: My novel is FINISHED!!

Blog_wippet

Happy Hump Day everyone!

YES! You heard me right! I’m finally done my novel!

giphy21

And it’s a weird feeling to be done, you know? My novel has been such a big part of my life for the past few months. I was either writing about my characters or thinking about about them every single day. And it’s kind of weird to… not be thinking about them. It’s like having friends who have moved to far away places.

The reassuring factor is that I’m not done done with this novel. Right now, I am working on cutting down on the length: The final word count is 147617, which is astronomical for the contemporary romance novel that it is… and I want to be kind to my beta-readers. But guys, is it me, or is it super hard to take out scenes??

Also, this is the 4th draft that I have finished, but I know for a certainty that there will be a 5th, and maybe a 7th… and maybe a 96th. So I am in it for the long haul :โ€™)

In today’s snippet, Olivia and Matt are having a studying session at Matt’s place. It is close to dinner time and Olivia is getting hungry:

โ€œOh, is that what itโ€™s about, Matt?โ€ Olivia says.

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œIt is so what itโ€™s about. Youโ€™re offended because I didnโ€™t eat your sandwich.โ€

He has to admit, that touched a nerve.

โ€œMaybe.โ€ He says.

โ€œSorry.โ€

โ€œYou have to say, โ€˜I sincerely promiseโ€™โ€ฆโ€ He begins, then pauses, waiting for her to repeat.

โ€œI sincerely promise.โ€

โ€œThat I will eat all the sandwichesโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThat I will eat all the sandwiches.โ€

โ€œThat Matt will ever makeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThat Matt will ever make.โ€

โ€œAnd never be on a diet again.โ€ He finishes.

โ€œAnd never be on a diet again?โ€ She says.

โ€œYes.โ€ He says, nodding at her.

She hesitates for a moment, as if having a debate in her head.

โ€œOkay,โ€ She says. โ€œAnd never be on a diet again.โ€

WIPpet Math: 126 words, first digit 1, second digit 8 (by adding 2 + 6) to make the 18th of October

WIPpet Wednesdays is a blog hop where writers can share a snippet from their WIP. The only stipulation is that the excerpt is somehow related to the date. Be sure to check out some of the other lovely WIPpet snippets here. Thank you Emily Wrayburn for hosting.

How do you feel when you finish a novel or a long-term project? Do you also find it hard to cut out scenes from your novel? How many drafts do you usually write before a story is finally done? Doesn’t it suck to be on a diet?

  1. Well done Sophie!!! Congratulations!!!
It’s always nice when a project, esp a long term, with lots of personal commitment, is finished. I am not very sentimental but I always feel touched.
And yes it’s hard to trim your work!
And yes I hate being on a diet!
But I am so happy for you!

Aww, that was such a cute scene — exactly what I needed in my stressful morning today. Yes, I know what you mean about long term projects. There’s a sense of relief, but also nostalgia to it. You ask yourself, “Now what?” And you don’t want to quite go back to the work itself just yet, but you also want to add some colors to it. While I don’t really “diet,” I know what you mean. Since the weather has drastically changed, I’ve been craving for potatoes all week….

    1. Hello! Thank you! Hope that your day gets better!
Yes thatโ€™s exactly how I feel about finishing a project- itโ€™s sort of a bittersweet feeling :โ€™)
Haha there are many things that you can make from potatoes! I donโ€™t diet anymore but I am a believer in eating healthily most of the time (itโ€™s hard sometimes!) and having โ€œcheat daysโ€ once in a while (I had pizza yesterday haha)..

  3. Woohoo! Congrats on finishing. Good luck on cutting it down(and, yes, my eyes widened a bit at the total. My first drafts tend to come in a bit short).

    Cute scene.

    1. Hello Fallon! Thank you! Haha my first draft was around 60k, but the length grew more and more with each draft :โ€™)

  4. Congratulations!!!!! That is an epic length, but you can always make it into two if you want. It’s so hard to cut scenes! I have a folder of scenes I took out that I sometimes rework into short freebies for my blog.

What a great snippet. That bit at the end, with her internal debate…yep, been there and done that. Not exactly dieting, but on Food Issues. So hard. But I like the way I could feel her struggle without it dragging me right into it with her.

    1. Thank you AM!! I donโ€™t think my novel is epic enough for it to be 2 stories haha. There are lots of scenes that I know are not necessary. That is a great idea to keep a folder of deleted scenes- I will do that in case I find use for them later ๐Ÿ™‚

Glad that you like this snippet! ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. AHHHH HUGE CONGRATULATIONS, Sophie!! I’m so, so happy you’re done with this draft. It’s so liberating, it feels so good, but also so…wrong, like a limb is missing suddenly, right? At least that’s how I felt about it all ahah. I was wondering, are you going to do NaNoWriMo or / and take the frenzy of NaNo to try and edit your novel or challenge yourself? ๐Ÿ™‚
I love your snippet – as always – and can’t wait to read this beautiful novel someday โค

    1. Thank you Marie!!! โค Yes I know exactly what you mean- it does feel like part of me is missing now that Iโ€™m not immersed in my novel anymore!

I am sad that I wonโ€™t be doing nanowrimo anymore, since I will be visiting my family in China for 2 weeks and I want to focus on spending time with them (when I am writing, my head tends to be in the clouds haha…) But I do want to get started on another writing project when I am back in late November. Will you be doing Nanowrimo Marie?!

Thank you and I am glad that you like this snippet โค

      1. Ohhh – I understand, ahah. It’s so great you’re traveling, but oh it’s so soon, I will miss you, too!! โค โค
I don't know just yet. I want to, but I'm not sure if I should use it to try and edit my WIP, or start something else entirely. Also… I probably don't have time ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ but…it's very tempting!

      2. They say that we should wait 4-6weeks between drafts, since it gives us some time to not think about our wip for a while and then look at it with new eyes when we start editing. So if there has been enough time since you finished writing, maybe editing is a good option! However itโ€™s not a hard and fast rule- as you can see I already kinda started editing my 4th draft which I just finished writing haha xD

Also there is still 12 days until November! Maybe you will have a new idea for a story ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

      3. Ohhh, well…it’s been six weeks now, by the time NaNo comes around, 8, so..according to your statistics, I should be good to go? ๐Ÿ˜… I’ve been feeling like I want to write, lately…it’s slowly coming back, the itch to write, ahah. I have story ideas in mind as well, stories I want to tell, but… I’m also holding this one close to my heart and I think I might want to finish it before launching into something else? I’m not sure ๐Ÿ˜…

      4. Thatโ€™s great that you feel like writing again! I think Itโ€™s entirely up to you, whether you want to edit your story or start a new one! Whichever way your heart swings ๐Ÿ™‚
For me, each time I finished a draft I was very excited to start editing it, which is why I wrote drafts 1-4 of this story one after the other haha. I think all writers work differently though. It depends on whether you feel ready to jump right into it again or whether you feel like you need a break ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Oh congratulations on finishing your WIP Sophie. ๐Ÿ™‚ โค๏ธ First of all I canโ€™t believe this is your fourth draft (in the past Iโ€™ve struggled to finish one draft) and wow nearly 150K words is insane. I donโ€™t envy you trying to cut it down some.
Also great snippet. I always look forwards to seeing your WIPPet Wednesday posts for more snips of Matt and Olivia, it sounds like youโ€™ve written them a really cute relationship. ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. 147,617! That’s BIG. I’m just finishing up the second draft to my wip. It’s looking it’ll come in around 95K.

Usually when I have to cut, it’s because the scene isn’t doing anything to move the plot forward. In those cases I have no issues losing it. No guilt. No remorse. It’s just gone. If there’s a really cool line or something in that scene, I’ll take it with me and find it a home somewhere else.

    Congrats on another draft done!

    1. Thanks JW!! Haha yes my manuscript is huge. I am hoping to have it below 100k. Absolutely agree that it is best to eliminate scenes that donโ€™t move the plot forward- I am learning to be ruthless when it comes to that :โ€™)

Thatโ€™s great that you are almost done your second draft!! Hoping to hear more updates about it ๐Ÿ™‚

Are you going to take part in NaNoWriMo this year? Seems like the perfect thing to fill time while your betas are doing their thing.

      2. I really really really wanted to do nanowrimo this year! (The novel that I just finished originated as a nanowrimo story last year actually!) However I am visiting my family in China in the beginning of November and I want to focus on them while I am there. I am hoping to start a new novel mid/late November though ๐Ÿ™‚ Will you be doing nano?

      3. I am! I’ll be finished the draft of my current WIP in the last week of October. Just in time to take a few days off, and launch into something brand new. I’m pretty excited. Feels like a long time since writing the first draft of anything other than blog posts.

  12. Congratulations, Sophie! ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s a great feeling…but often kind of sad, too. I re-read mine until I’m sick of them and then I’m ready to move on. The cutting scenes – I do cut some out and save them, but mostly they stay, hence I write big books.

I’m so excited to read yours! I’ve loved the snippets – this one is fab, and I’m wondering where it goes from here, because if it was me, I’d be as annoyed with someone bossing me into not dieting as I am with dieting itself. But that is just me, I’m pretty sure.

    1. Thank you Debbie โค Yes it is a good but sad feeling to be done writing a novel. The characters are still floating around in my head haha- I think they will stick around for a while ๐Ÿ™‚ This week I am starting to be excited about planning my new novel!

Haha that is a good point that some people would be annoyed when others tell them to not diet. Olivia is pretty easy going in this case (she doesnโ€™t like dieting anyway)
