3 Ways to Fall in Love with Blogging Again

Hello everyone!

For fellow Canadians out there: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

giphy5

I spent my Thanksgiving weekend with friends (on a pumpkin patch), family (eating lots of good food) and my novel (it’s thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis close to being finished).

Although we celebrate Thanksgiving, turkey really isn’t a thing in my family. We are so teeny-tiny (just Mom, Dad, and I) that we would never finish a full turkey if we cooked one. So, we had lobsters :’)

Today I want to write about something that is personal to me. You guys might not have known it, but I… was kind of in a blogging slump a while back in August. For a month or so, I dreaded the thought of writing a post, and even replying to comments (which is usually my favourite part of blogging) seemed like a chore.

Now, thankfully, I am out of my blogging slump. Here are some things that helped me 🙂

1. Change up the type of posts you do!

Do you always do the same kind of posts each week? I did. Monday was a discussion post, Wednesday a snippet of my novel, Thursday a quote from a book, and Friday a review. Next week: Repeat. I liked that I never had to think much about what to write. But it also got… kind of boring.

giphy8

It’s time to switch it up a bit! Check out some other bloggers’ posts and see if there are interesting tags and memes that you want to try out. Maybe it is time to take part in a Top Ten Tuesday or a Top Five Tuesday! Maybe another blogger’s post inspires you to write your own opinion about a topic (it is always a good idea to leave a link back or to ask the blogger for permission!)

For me, I got super duper excited about making an aesthetic post for the first time. I also realized that I don’t really like writing reviews, so I made an executive decision to………. write less of them. No one noticed :’)

2. Change up your posting schedule!

giphy12

It might help to switch up when you post. Do you feel too much pressure going by a fixed schedule (Ie. Monday, Wednesday, Friday every week)? Maybe it will be help to be more flexible, like posting three times every week on whichever days you feel like. If you’ve always blogged on a flexible schedule, maybe you will find stability in a more regimented approach.

Or, your posting frequency might need a change. Maybe posting x times a week is exhausting, and you need to pull back a bit.

Although I initially loved posting 4 times a week, I soon realized that it was causing me stress and just wasn’t sustainable. So, I decided to scale back to 3 blog posts a week, which made a world of difference. Not only did I feel less pressure, it also freed up more time so I can put more thought into each post. The unexpected thing is that it didn’t change my blog stats at all. Just look at some of the other bloggers out there: There are immensely popular bloggers who post two times a week or even just once a week.

3. Post about something other than books and blogging!

giphy11

Is there another passion that has been pulling on your heartstrings lately? Maybe you like fashion, or TV and movies, or music, or dance, or travel, or you’ve recently started writing your own novel! Chances are, you’ll have plenty to say about these things. Personally I LOVE to read about other bloggers’ travels, WIPs, outfits of the day (OOTD), or other hobbies and interests. It’s like a breath of fresh air!

As for myself, I haven’t ventured far from book/blogging topics. BUT I would very much like to make an OOTD post one day. In fact, I was thiiiiis close to posting one today… before chickening out :’) I also want to share my pole dancing journey! One day, guys, one day!

Blog_letschat

Do you celebrate Thanksgiving in your culture? What helps you get out of a blogging slump? Is there a “right” number of times to post each week? Is there something you’ve always wanted to post about, but haven’t? What are your other favourite hobbies?

And, guys… did I just reach 200 followers?!?

  1. Great advice!! And happy thanksgiving! We ended up with 17 people at my parents for dinner….. it was loud but so much fun. I’m sure they would have all loved to have lobster! 😂

    1. Thank you Shanah! That’s awesome that you had a big thanksgiving celebration 🙂 ours has always been small and cosy, but we find ways to make it special (like lobsters! Or dumplings! Or hot pot! 🙂 )

      2. That’s awesome 🙂 I’ve always wondered what it’s like to have a sibling, but there are perks to being an only child (like not having to share toys!)

      3. There are most definitely perks to being an only child! I have two kids and it’s so hard for me to figure out the sibling dynamic!

    1. Hello! Glad that you find this post useful 🙂 I don’t think readers will mind if you shake things up once in a while- you might start to gain more readers from a new audience as well! I like to share little tidbits from my personal life at the beginning of each post. I find that people actually like commenting about them because they can also relate 🙂 Thank you for dropping by!

  3. Happy Thanksgiving Sophie, it seems like you had a great weekend and I’m glad you got to spend time with your friends, family and novel. 😀
Great post as well. I haven’t yet fallen out of love with blogging but I think what helps me is that I have a variety of different posts I can publish, if I’m bored of reviews there are discussions, if I’m bored of discussions there are book tags. Also every so often I post about travelling which is another major love of mine. 🙂
I hope these tips help you if you ever fall out of love with blogging again, and I hope you never fall out of love with blogging for good.
    Again great post. 😀 ❤

I agree that the key is to switch it up, so that we will never get bored! In the future I hope to make a few posts here and there about my other hobbies, like fashion and dance. I look forward to seeing your next travel post 🙂 🙂

This is all great advice! I think it is good to mix things up so that blogging doesn’t just become routine?

    1. Hello Kristin! Thank you! Yes, when things become routine and all too comfortable, that’s when it’s a good time to shake it up!

  5. Happy thanksgiving! 200 followers sounds like a perfect gift for the occasion! We don’t celebrate thanksgiving in Greece (no corresponding cultural background) but Halloween is becoming quite a thing! As for family gatherings food is a big thing in our culture. My family have always been heavy eaters!
Your advice is really useful. I agree that repetition is easy but boring! To avoid this I keep re-inventing my show.

    1. Hello Michael! Hope Fantasticon was fun!!

That’s interesting to hear about Greek culture! Halloween is such a fun holiday and I was super excited to participate when I came to Canada as a child. In Greece, do kids also go door-to-door and get free candy? Both Halloween and Thanksgiving are not celebrated in China, although some western holidays like Christmas are being adopted (more as a commercial holiday than a religious one.) Yes food is a big thing for my Chinese-Canadian family as well 🙂

That’s great to hear that this advice is useful for you! Yes, it is always a good idea to re-invent to keep things interesting 🙂

      1. Yes it’s more of a commercial/recreational thing but then again even traditional feasts are less spiritual nowadays. We don’t have the door-to-door thing and I don’t think we will as door-to-door is slowly phasing out from our traditional events as well.

      2. Yes a lot of traditional holidays are becoming more commercial now (like Easter and Christmas) which is too bad! I wish there is less focus on shopping, although I am glad that spending time with family is still important during the holidays 🙂

      3. And yes FantastiCon was super fun, I’ll say some things in the next Ex Libris.

  7. I’m late but, HAPPY THANKSGIVING. I hope you had a lovely time with your family, Sophie! 🙂
This is such a lovely and helpful post. It’s SO good to change things up once in a while, or at least try to, re-focus on the things we love and the things we like less on our blogs, in order to fall in love with it all again. I’m definitely doing that every once in a while, my blog has quite changed since the beginning ahah, but it’s good, always keeps me motivated 🙂 I’m trying sometimes to talk more about writing, my WIP, and sometimes about traveling, and even if I enjoy it, sometimes the stats still get to me about these posts ahah. Anyway, I would LOVE OOTD posts, as well as hearing about your pole dancing journey! 🙂
Congratulations on the followers!! ❤ ❤

  8. A belated Happy Thanksgiving. We don’t celebrate the holiday in the UK, but I love how festive this time of year is in general. Your day sounded absolutely perfect and the fact that you spent it at a pumpkin patch sounds lovely. I definitely think changing things up is a great way to find blogging inspiration. I always use to stress about being consistent in posting, but now I’ve learned to post what I want when I want. I’d love to hear more about your pole dancing journey and I LOVE OOTD posts. 😀
