September Wrap-Up!

Blog_monthlywrapup

Happy Friday!

How is your week going? Goodwill (a donation centre and thrift store) had a sale today, so of course I went and scooped up some goods. I absolutely love thrifting! It is like a treasure hunt, or a box of chocolates – you never know what you will find! Here is (part of) my haul:

Yes! Those are the first 12 volumes of Sailor Moon, which was my favourite cartoon growing up. Seeing these on the shelves (in PRISTINE CONDITION), I couldn’t help but pick them up :’)

Anyway, can you guys believe that it’s almost October?! I feel like I just did my August wrap-up post :’)

Blog_booksread

I read 6 books this month – 5 audiobooks and 1 book in print – despite work, writing, pole dance classes, blogging, and everything in between. Sooooo I am quite proud of myself :’)

History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera (Audio)Β β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…/5

Griffin still loves Theo, even though he is bitter that Theo ditched him for his new boyfriend Jackson. When Theo dies in a drowning accident, Griffin realizes that Jackson is the only person who can understand what he is going through. I loved this book, which broke my heart in all the right ways. Check out my review here.

They Both Died at the End by Adam Silvera (Audio)Β β˜…β˜…β˜…/5

Death Cast informs Mateo and Rufus that they have 24 hours left to live. When the two boys meet using the Last Friend app, they make a pact to live their life to the fullest on their last day together. This was the book that I was eagerly waiting to be released. Although I liked the book, it was kind of… depressing. Click here for my review.

Will Grayson Will Grayson by David Levithan and John Green (Audio)Β β˜…β˜…/5

What is it like to meet another person who shares the same name as you (both first name and last name)? It must be a trippy experience. And that’s exactly what this book is. Super trippy :’) The writing is whimsical and laugh-out-loud hilarious, but I didn’t find the characters interesting or relatable.

Looking for Alaska by John Green (Audio)Β β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…/5

Miles “Pudge” Halter lives a pretty boring life… until he moves to a new school and meets Alaska Young, who is beautiful, unpredictable, and anything but boring. I absolutely loved the writing in this book, which made me laugh and brought me close to tears :’)

Two by Two by Nicholas Sparks (Print)Β β˜…β˜…β˜…/5

Russell Green is living the perfect life as a loving husband, father, and executive in a successful advertising company. Then, everything crashes down when he loses his job and his wife. And of course, in true Nicholas Sparks fashion, another woman who comes to the rescue :’) Although this is an adult romance, it is surprisingly very, very clean (even compared to most Young Adult romances I’ve read this year.)Β I have a few qualms about some of the characters and the ending of the book, but I really enjoyed reading it.

When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi (Audio)Β β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…/5

This is the memoir of Dr. Paul Kalanithi, an accomplished neurosurgery resident with a love for literature. He spent his life in pursuit of one question: What makes life meaningful? He found himself confronted by this question when he was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. This was an incredible book with absolutely superb writing, that made me think about how to live life to the fullest. One of the best books I’ve read all year :’)

Kudos to these awesome bloggers and blog posts for either putting a smile on my lips, or giving me food for thought (or both!) πŸ™‚

Mikaela @ The Well-Thumbed Reader gives tips about how to grow your blog. This is a must-read for newbie bloggers (such as myself)! And even if you have been blogging for a while now, maybe there are some tips that you will find useful here as well!

Marie @ Drizzle and Hurricane Books talks about how to buddy read and how to write the best comments in the universe. These are only a few of the amazing posts on her blog πŸ™‚

Dani @ Perspective of a Writer explains why we should all read subtitles! As a Chinese immigrant who had to learn English as a second language, subtitles have been a big, big part of my life, and even now I prefer to read subtitles rather than, well, listen to people talk on TV πŸ™‚ How do you guys feel about subtitles?

Darren @ The Arty Plantsman is a botanical illustrator who also writes little tidbits about life, including a social experiment about making sure no one will sit beside you on the bus (it is hilarious).Β Check out this other post about how to help a friend or loved one who have depression.

Ryan @ A Writer’s Path gives advice to writers about how to put yourself out there. A must-read for all those who want to make it as a writer!

Michael @ Ex Libris discusses The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest by Stieg LarrsonΒ and It Can’t Happen Here by Sinclair LewisΒ on his Youtube channel!Β Kudos to Michael for making his first videos in English. Definitely check these out and show your support πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you so much Melissa! That means a lot to me ❀ I loved History if All You Left Me, hope you will like this book if you ever read it. A warning though- Adam Silvera's books are quite emotional, and I find that I have to be in a certain mood to read them. Have a happy October πŸ™‚

  3. Sophie!! I was kinda shocked to see a couple of those ratings but I have to say that sometimes depressing kills it for me too… When Breath Becomes Air sounds truly inspiring, my book club would love it! You have your act so together… I haven’t even thought about ending September yet!! LOL, though I’ve read some AMAZING books this month so it’ll be hard to choose, but you’ve got me starting to think about my own wrap up post…

AND I WAS SO EXCITED TO SEE MY SUBTITLES POST MENTIONED! Okay sorry for the shouting but yeah I am super pumped, lol! That was one of my favorite posts I wrote this month so to see a shout out for it just about slayed me… and I too love reading subtitles rather than listening… (and English is my first language!) Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I hope you have an amazingly wonderful reading October ❀

In the middle of the week, I was like… what?! It’s already going to be October?! I love making wrap up posts because it’s a great way to reflect about the books we’ve read this month! Looking forward to seeing yours πŸ™‚

No problem! I love sharing posts that relate personally to me πŸ™‚

  4. Oh, Sophie, it sounds like you had such a lovely reading month – I am thrilled you liked Looking for Alaska so much, it is my favorite book of all times ❀ I'm sorry you didn't enjoy Will Grayson, Will Grayson so much, though :/
I used to read tons of subtitles whenever I watched movies and tv shows in English, now I put them to reassure me a bit, but barely read them anymore. They're so useful though, and this is mostly how I learned English really well, ahah πŸ™‚
Hope you'll have a fabulous October! xx

    1. Yes I am so glad that I read Looking for Alaska – it is an amazing book :’) Will Grayson is the second book I’ve read by David Levithan. I realize that I’m not a big fan of his writing haha :’)

That’s how I feel about subtitles as well! They were so useful for me to learn English. Even now when I watch some movies in theatres, some characters mumble a bit and I miss what they are saying. That’s when I wish that there are subtitles XD

Wishing you a happy October too ❀

  7. Sailor Moon is the one show that I didn’t watch in my childhood. I feel like I missed out on that but YAY for finding the volumes in tiptop condition. It sounds like you had a wonderful month. I’ve never read an audiobook but I always feel like I should try one. Hope October is kind to you. πŸ˜€

    1. Audiobooks are essential for me, because I barely have any time to sit down and read a book! I’ve only read 1 book in print this month, and if not for audiobooks, that would be my only book this month haha πŸ™‚ Some audiobooks are better narrated than other ones, so definitely check out the ratings beforehand! I am listening to the Illuminae audiobook and it is amazing so far! (There are 4 narrators and even some very effective sound effects!) Hope you have a happy October as well πŸ™‚

  8. Thrift stores all the way! Especially after finding some first edition HP’s today, haha. I couldn’t control myself – who could, really? Pretty unfortunate that there aren’t many English books in the stores though. Wish I’d live in an English-speaking country sometimes, haha. I’d definitely spend my rent money on.. not rent. :’)

Nice reading month & happy reading!

    1. Wow! Great find! That’s what I love about thrift stores πŸ™‚ I think I am lucky to be living in an English speaking country- it also means that I end up spending a lot of money on books haha :’) If you like second-hand books, there is an European website (awesomebooks.com) which sells books for great prices! They ship internationally as well πŸ™‚

      1. I’d probably have the same problem but.. I don’t think I’d mind it at all, haha. :’)
I’ve heard about it before and ordered there once. Made a huge order – really huge – and only received like a tenth of the books I ordered. I got my money back for the others but I don’t think I’ll ever order there again.. :’)

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Oh that’s terrible that you only received a few of the books that you’ve ordered. I only ordered from that site once and had a good experience, but I will be more wary about ordering from them again. Good to know πŸ™‚

        Liked by 1 person

      3. It might’ve been just bad luck, but it sucks if that’s the first and only experience you have. Immediately makes you not want to order there again, haha.

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Yes that is bad luck. I would’ve felt the same way!

  10. Wow that is an incredible find at your local thrift store Sophie, especially considering they were in such great condition as well. I never saw Sailor Moon as a child but I know a few of my friends loved that show. πŸ™‚
Also I have They Both Die at the End on my to-read list next actually. I’m hoping to start it tomorrow and I can’t wait. I’m glad you enjoyed it even thought it was a little depressing. I’ve come to expect that from Adam Silvera’s books so I’m totally ready for this one to break my heart into small pieces.
Great post, and I hope you have a great October as well. πŸ™‚ ❀

  12. Glad to see you enjoyed Adam Silvera’s books; they’re all so depressing, but that’s sort of why I love them? I’m a masochist, obviously. XD And I’m so glad you loved Looking For Alaska! That’s my favorite John Green book, and one of my favorite contemporaries of all time. ❀ And thanks so much for linking back to my post about growing your blog; I'm so glad people found those tips to be helpful! πŸ˜€

    1. That’s awesome that we like some of the same books! Looking for Alaska is also my favourite John Green book πŸ™‚ I feel the same way about Adam Silvera- although his books are guaranteed to break my heart, I still keep reading them πŸ™‚

No problem! You are an amazing blogger and I am glad to hear tips from you ❀

  13. I’ve been seeing They Both Die at the End EVERYWHERE lately. And since hype usually works very well on me, I WANT TO READ IT A LOT! Plus, I read about a fan interaction with Silvera where he was really, really awesome. So that just helps. Great post!

    1. Thanks! πŸ™‚ To be honest I didn’t enjoy They Both Die at the End as much as I thought I would, but there are lots of people who did! Hope you will like it if you are going to read it. That’s great when authors are kind to their fans! I haven’t met any authors in person before, but I would like to one day πŸ™‚
