5 Ways to be Excited About Reading Again

Hello everyone!

How was your weekend? Mine was an eventful one: My friend has a crush on my other friend (a feeling which I suspect is reciprocated), so naturally I set them up on a subtle lunch date. It went well 🙂

Psst… If I never make it as a writer, maybe I can be a match-maker 😉

Today’s topic is also about love, that is, the love we have for reading. Marie @ Drizzle and Hurricane Books wrote an amazing blog post titled “Book bloggers: do we still love reading?” This blog post made me reflect about how my relationship with books changed as I became a book blogger: I used to be excited about opening each and every book. And now, well… I’m kind of not.

Then I realized I’m kind of in a mini-reading slump. It was “mini” in the sense that I continued to read at a pretty fast pace for me (about 6-7 books per month). It was a “slump” in the sense that I didn’t enjoy reading as much as I used to: though I couldn’t find flaws in a book I read, I also wasn’t moved by the stories or the characters.

Here are a few things I’ve brainstormed about how to be excited about reading again. (Spoiler alert: It is starting to help!)

1. Try a different genre!

Do you have a favourite genre? For me, it is contemporary YA. But recently, I read so many contemporary YA books that… well, it’s starting to bore me. When I began reading books from very different genres (When Breath Becomes Air, a memoir, and Two by Two, an adult romance), it is like a breath of fresh air. My next book is a YA science fiction (Illuminae, a YA science fiction), which I am so, so excited about.

Reading is like eating: No matter how much you like a certain dish, it’s not as tasty when you eat it all the time. Maybe it is time to try something new!

2. Try a different medium!

What is your preferred medium for reading? Do you like reading books in print? Or do you prefer audiobooks? Are you a graphic novel fan? My reading diet consists 90% of audiobooks, because I simply don’t have time to, well, actually read. Then, one day, I set aside some time to sit down and flip open an actual, physical, paper book (Two by Two). It was like magic.

giphy25

Are you an audiobook fan like me? Maybe it’s time to read an actual book again! Have you always loved reading physical books? Maybe it is time to give audiobooks a chance!

3. Find a reading buddy.

If you find it motivating to read the same book with a buddy or a group, maybe this is the option for you! There are plenty of reading groups on Goodreads (such as Fantasy Buddy Reads or The YA Book Club). Alternatively you can find a buddy who wants to read the same book as you!

giphy29

To be honest, although I am part of some reading groups, I haven’t actually actively participated in one. I am kind of a rogue agent :’) What is your experience with buddy reading or reading groups?

4. Read what you want.

As a book blogger, I find myself gravitating towards new releases, books that people like to read about and talk about. I don’t request ARCs, but I can imagine that if I did, I would feel the pressure to read and review them.

Maybe it’s time to read that book that we’ve always wanted to read, even if it is not a New & Shiny Book, even if it’s not popular, even if it’s not even on our TBR.

5. Read when you want.

I am terribly guilty of forcing myself to read. Because life is so busy, I feel that I have to use every spare moment to read or write. Then I think: Maybe I will enjoy books more when I only read when I want to read.

giphy28

Maybe today, you want to read to binge-read an entire book! Or just a chapter! Or just a paragraph! Or you just wanna chillax! It’s all okay!

Do you like setting people up (like me)? Have you experienced a reading slump – if so, what helped you get out of it? Do you think you will ever get tired of reading your favourite genre? What do you think about buddy reading and reading groups?

  1. Nice post! Reading slumps happen to everyone, I think it’s normal. I agree with the ways you propose to get over it. I jad written an article a couple of years ago about ways to overcome reading slumps (unfortunately in greek). Sometimes we don’t have the energy or we aren’t in the mood to read and I’ve learnt to live with it. Book blogging creates more responsibilities because you have to communicate in an effective way your feelings for a book and this doesn’t always come easy.
Oh and I love to watch match-making unfolding!

    1. Hello Michael! Yes we can’t always be in the mood to read, just like how we’re not always in the mood to exercise or work! Book blogging does make this hard since we always have to have a book to talk about, so we have to read despite our mood haha XD

Haha yes it’s definitely fun to watch what happens 🙂 I am excited for my friend but it is too early to tell!

  2. There are many times I take a break from a favourite genre esp after a really awesome book.
Group readings have never really worked for me and I haven’t really tried buddy reading. I guess it’s partly because I don’t have local reading buddies and internet buddy reading takes sth away from the experience.

    1. I can imagine why you want to take a break from a genre after reading a great book- another book from the same genre would pale in comparison 🙂

I haven’t gotten into group reading, whether it is online or offline! I can imagine that a book club would be fun 🙂

  3. People get bored of reading !?

I do get that people go off a certain genre for a while. I used to enjoy reading fantasy but got bored of unpronounceable names and books with pages of maps at the start and an unfathomable back-story. I have started reading a little of this again now and it is going OK.
Also I sometimes go off crime-fiction, especially when the world seems a nasty enough place without adding more nastiness.
I’ve thought about book groups but I read so fast I would get bored waiting for others to catch up. I like the idea of a reading buddy though.

    1. Haha yes I do think partly “being bored of reading” is being bored of what I am reading. I agree that reading the same genre for a long time gets repetitive! And sometimes the genre we gravitate towards depends on our mood as well. I also used to be a fan of crime fiction, but similar to you, the books tend to be heavier in content and often I am looking for something lighter! That’s great that you are reading more fantasy now- that also used to be a favourite of mine. maybe I will try this genre again as well!

Yes I can imagine that people read at different paces and that this can be an issues with book groups, maybe better with a reading buddy 🙂

  5. Yes, reading when you want and what you want is such a good idea! Right now, I’m taking a Reading break and just watching TV and movies, which is good for me! I know I’ll eventually get back to reading and enjoy it as much as I used to! And trying a different genre is a great idea as well; sometimes, I just need something new to shake it up! 😄

    1. Hi Mikaela! Yes I think taking a reading break is a good idea- hope you will come back feeling refreshed and ready to jump back into reading again! As book bloggers, we should remember that we read for fun and that it shouldn’t feel like work!

And yes it’s more fun when we try something new once in a while!

  6. Great tips Sophie, and a great post as well. 🙂 I’m always looking for tips for my next reading slump (which hasn’t happened yet but doesn’t mean it won’t at any moment) and there are definitely a couple here I’ll be trying. I never thought about trying a different medium before, but I will now. I mainly read on my Kindle so it could be that taking a physical book is all I need to do to beat my next slump. 🙂
    Again great post. 😀 ❤️

    1. Thank you Beth! That’s great to hear that reading is going well, and hope that these tips will be helpful for you in the future!

I definitely read more ebooks and audiobooks than physical books- when I picked up a physical book, I realized that I missed that feeling of reading words on paper and turning the pages 🙂

      1. That’s all right. 🙂 Yeah I guess reading always goes well for most of us until it doesn’t right?
It can be refreshing changing up the way you read. I completely get what you mean but just never really put it into words before. 🙂

  7. Oh this is such a great post, Sophie – also I’m so happy I inspired you with this, thank you so much for mentioning me, it’s an honor ❤ ❤
Your tips are all so great here! Whenever I find myself in a bit of a slump, I really like to try and switch genres, or go back to an old favorite of mine, trying to remember why I love reading so much and what I love about it all this way. It's one of the best remedies for sure ❤ ❤

    1. Yes! It’s always a great idea to try something new, and there are a few favourites that I always go back to 🙂

I am glad that you like this post! I am always a bit nervous when I am making posts like this because I don’t want to copy another blogger :’)

      1. Ohhh, you had no reason to be nervous – obviously I’m so happy to hear that I inspired you with this (and that you mentioned me, that’s so sweet of you. sometimes I feel like bloggers influence others, when you see tons of alike posts popping up suddenly, but too little mentions. It’s good to share the love, I mean, it’s not copying at all. depends on the blog post, I guess, buuuut… okay wow, I’ll stop or I will turn into a rant-blog-post-mode in your comment haha)
you have a totally different approach and take to the whole thing, which I LOVED ❤ ❤

      2. Yes I absolutely think that we influence each other and sometimes it is a good thing! I feel like sometimes there can be a fine balance or a thin line between being inspired and copying sometimes ideas haha (which is a whole different can of worms!) I am so glad that you like this post and my approach to this topic 🙂

      3. Oh yes, there’s a thin line for sure ahah. As long as we know when we’re crossing it, it’s all good 😛

  8. I’ve never set up a friend but I have had people try to set me up with others, which did not go well at all. I think if it’s obvious that the feelings are reciprocated then I say go for it but in my case it turned into my friend thinking he knew what was best for me and almost forcing his other friend onto me and in the end I had to be blunt and tell him I’m not interested. 😛

Onto the actual discussion I think the important thing is reading what you want and when you want it. I think with blogging you feel a sense of obligation to read and review as much as you can. The reality is though is that we all read at a different pace and gravitate towards different books. I feel a lot freer now that I read and blog at my own pace.

    1. Sorry to hear that you’ve had bad experiences with being set up! I agree that it should be done with the interests of both parties in mind. And it can get quite awkward if one person isn’t into the other! For last weekend’s event, we got together a group of mutual friends, so I was exaggerating a bit when I called it a lunch “date”. There was no pressure on their part to have to talk to each other (though they did end up chatting!) which I think makes them more at ease 🙂

Yes! It is important to take things at our own pace! I think I am still figuring out what pace works for me in terms of reading and blogging 🙂

      Thanks for dropping by Lois!
