WIPPet Wednesday: Cloudy Day

Blog_wippet

Hello everyone!

How is your week going? Last Thursday evening, I fell on my back during a pole dance class. It’s kind of a funny story:

Conversation with fiancé:*

Me: Uh, I fell on my back during pole class.

Fiancé: OMG go to Emergency right now you might have a lung perforation and drop dead like this minute-

*Note that fiancé is a medical resident, and that he is on the West Coast so this is a phone conversation

Conversation with medical resident in the hospital ER:

Me: Uh, I fell on my back during pole class.

Resident: How bad does it hurt, on a scale of 1 to 10?

[Meanwhile, the person in the room beside me screeches in pain. Cue feelings of guilt and non-belongingness.]

Me: Uh, a 5 out of 10?

Resident: Go back to work.**

Me: But-

**Note that I work in the same hospital

Conversation with coworkers:

Me: Uh, I fell on my back during pole class.

Coworkers: YOU POLE DANCE?!

They did eventually get around to asking how my back is feeling :’)

Anyway 🙂

Today’s snippet follows shortly after last week’s. Olivia goes to the library in hopes of understanding Matt better:

Olivia snaps the book shut and hugs it in her arm. She picks up a few other books about depression and checks them out. Her shoulders are sore by the time she lugs them all home and dumps them onto her desk.

It is a dark and cloudy day. she turns on her reading lamp and grabs a fresh stack of note cards.

The thing is, Olivia never failed at anything in life. She truly believes that, if you put your mind to it and work hard enough at it, you will succeed. If you can get top grades in all your classes and maintain a 4.0 GPA, surely you can make another person happy.

WIPPet Math: 3 paragraphs for Wednesday 🙂

  3. I hope your back feels better. I laughed at your fiancé’s response, though. Nothing like going to the immediate worst case scenario. 😉

Oh, Olivia. You can’t *make* someone else happy. No matter how smart you are, some things just don’t work that way.

    1. Haha yes! There is something called medical resident syndrome, where the trainee diagnoses him/herself and their loved ones with rare medical conditions 🙂

That’s so true, happiness comes from within. It is something that Olivia will learn 🙂 thanks for dropping by!

    1. Thank you! I am feeling much better today 🙂

Yes unfortunately Olivia will learn that there’s only so much you can do, and depression is more than the matter of making someone happy

I am glad that you like the snippet today. Yes Olivia really gives it her all (she is a keener in the best sense of the word 🙂 )

  7. Ha! That’s a great story, though I am sorry about your back. It’s awesome that you do pole dancing class.

Great snippet. I love how she seems to think she can pull a Hermione Granger to deal with his depression. It’s sweet of her, but I hope she knows she can’t fix him.

    1. Glad that you like the story 🙂 I love pole because it helped so much with my strength and confidence.

Yes, Olivia has the best of intentions, but she will learn that there is more to it than hard work in this situation.

  8. *cocks head* So, how did he immediately jump to a perforated lung from you falling? I mean, I get jumping to a worse case scenario – I do it all the time (see last weeks posts on my blog about the damn deer mice) but even that’s a bit of a stretch for me! I mean, unless you were gasping for air or something. Congrats on pole dancing though! I’ve always wanted to take a course, but there are none available near me. Plenty of belly dancing though, but it’s mostly cabaret and I prefer tribal.

Great snippet, but man does Olivia has a lot to learn about depression. Hopefully those books can knock some sense into her 🙂

    1. Haha yes I remember your post about the deer mice! I think he’s just being a bit too concerned about me 🙂 and to be fair to him, I did exaggerate a bit!

That’s awesome that you do belly dancing!! I used to take belly dancing classes before pole (but it was too hard on my knees). I love how beautiful and elaborate the costumes are.

Yes she has a lot to learn, and some of it is not just book knowledge. Thanks for dropping by Christina 🙂

  9. Hey, Olivia? I don’t quite think it’s the same. No one can make another person happy. We all have to get there on our own…

And the pole dancing story was as good as a snippet, except for that little detail of you getting hurt! Hope you’re better by now, and dancing away!

    1. Yes Olivia still has lots to learn about how depression works!

  11. I hope your back is all right! I feel like you would probably know if you had a perforated lung because you’d be in agony?

I love Sophie’s idealism but I wonder if this is the way to learn on this subject.

    1. Thank you!! Yes better to be safe than sorry 🙂 My back is feeling much better now!

There is more to depression than what is written in books. Olivia will learn 🙂
