3 Reasons Why I Blog

Hello everyone!!

What is a perfect weekend for you? This weekend, I spent a day catching up with two of my close girlfriends and another day catching up on my novel. Yup, that means a whole day of pure, unadulterated writing time. Hard to come by when you are an adult 🙂

Recently, I’ve been thinking about why I do the things I do. A few weeks ago, I wrote about why I read. Today I want to write about something else that I love to do: Blogging.

Blogging has taken my life by storm. I can’t survive a day without checking my WordPress app. It’s kind of… an addiction.

Anyhow… Da da dum!!

1. We can express our thoughts, ideas, and opinions about things we care about.

Through blogging, we can write as much as we want about what we love. We can fangirl over our favourite books and characters, we can express our undying love for a particularly obscure author, we can rip apart a book that we feel is hyped (figuratively speaking. We know that books are sacred things which must never be physically harmed in any way, shape or form.)

And on a personal note: I am a quiet person out there in the real world. I have more confidence and trust in the words I write than the words that come out of my mouth. I would rather write 500 words than speak them any day. And blogging lets me do just that.

2. We find other people who love the same things as we do.

Frankly, growing up I thought I was a bit of a weirdo. The friends around me don’t really read unless they have to. They are of this variety:

So for many years, I read book after book all by myself, and I didn’t really have anyone to share this interest with. Which was, kind of………… sad.

That is, until I discovered the blogging community. It is like a whole new universe has opened up to me. It is amazing to meet so many awesome people who care about the same things as I do, who like the same books as I do, who love the same characters as I do, and who are as annoyed about the ending of Everything Everything as I am. I absolutely love discovering new blogs, learning new things, and meeting bloggers from all over the world. From all over the world! How cool is that?!

And it’s so amazing that there are people out there who actually want to read what I write. I still can’t believe it sometimes :’)

3. Blogging has changed the way I read.

I love reading, always have and always will. But there were two things I struggled with when it came to books, and blogging solved both for me:

The first problem was, believe it or not, I never knew what to read. Now, after discovering so many amazing fellow book blogs, reading other bloggers’ recommendations and reviews, and keeping up to date with what’s coming, my TBR is a bottomless pit. And…. I kind of have the opposite problem.

Secondly, I have the memory of a goldfish. It’s kind of embarrassing when I look at the cover of a book I’ve read and don’t remember what it’s about. OR, even worse, whether or not I’ve read it. One of the initial reasons why I started blogging is that it would force me to remember the books I’ve read. I know, right? Go ahead and laugh :’)

Now, I want to hear about YOU: What’s your idea of a perfect weekend? Do you have a leaky memory about the books you’ve read? Or are you the type to remember every plot point? Why do YOU blog?

  1. You seem to have read my mind, Sophie. I could not have said it better! I think we bloggers are a special kind of breed… And I love that about us. I love how similar we are and how we always have each other’s backs. I love how we share so many awesome experiences! I just wish I had more time for blogging but alas, real life happens 😢
    Wonderful, wonderful post! ❤️

    1. Thank you Sophie! So glad that you enjoyed this post 🙂
Yes I agree that us book bloggers are similar and that is what I love about blogging 🙂 and I definitely wish that I have more hours in the day to spend on blogging and reading!

  2. Gah Sophie!! I too have a leaky memory… it’s not that I don’t remember something but it’s all rather… vague… lol unless I’ve written a bunch about it…?! Then for some reason I remember better. Very odd! I also really love to write what I think rather than say it to others?! Writing is still hard for me in comparison but I think I just speak really strongly? lol, blogging is great! It can soften or strength at will!! ❤

    1. Glad that I’m not the only one!! Yes, writing things down definitely helps me remember as well. That is interesting that you are a strong speaker. I am different in that I am soft spoken 🙂 I like how you say that blogging can soften or strengthen at will. It reminds me of how they say that words can hurt or heal. So true 🙂
      Thanks for dropping by!

  3. Oh, my perfect weekend! I love my sleep (which is weird sometimes because I’m also the type of person to stay up all night) so I would probably sleep in quite a bit and then all I want is good food and my family! I love heading over to my parents for a nice BBQ and of course getting to spend time with my nephews! I absolutely love children and getting to spend a ton of time with my 3 and 2-year-old nephews is always great!

LMAO. Yes, I do! Most of the time I won’t even remember what happened in a book just days after I read it? Like, yeah I’ll remember major plot points but other than that? Nope, it’s probably all gone. Which is why I love re-reads so much!

    1. That does sound like a very nice weekend! Yum… BBQ!! I work with kids all day, and yes they are plenty of fun!!

Haha I’m glad that you relate to my book-forgetting woes, and that I’m not the only one! One of the great things about re-reads is when I encounter an awesome scene that I totally forgot happened! It’s kind of neat because I get to experience the book almost as if I haven’t read it before 🙂

  4. Well, I don’t blog (mainly because I am probably too lazy to write) but I do a book related podcast (yes, I love to talk). But my perfect weekend is one with no chores, just books, games, music with liberal application of coffee, chocolate and wine.
My memory works in a strange way, I remember too much of the plot for a reread to be enjoyable but I can’t recall specific quotes or many details.
As to why I podcast, it’s mainly to communicate with the bookish community, being kind of isolated in my small rural town.

    1. Hi Michael!
It’s great to hear from you 🙂 That sounds like an amazingly relaxing weekend! And yes it is awesome to have a weekend without chores, which means more time to do the things we love 🙂 I think a leaky memory is a blessing in disguise, because it means that we can still enjoy the book the second time around. I remember you mentioning before that you have a podcast! What is it called and do you have a link? I think podcasting, like blogging, is a great way to reach out to people with similar interests 🙂

      1. Oh Sophie thank you for taking an interest in my podcast but unfortunately it’s in greek mainly because there are relatively few (not YA) bookcasts in greek so there is still some interest. It is called Ex Libris by MikeBooklover (I use mixcloud and YouTube for hosting fb, g+ and wordpress for “presence”). However if you are into instagram (my username is michael_lux feel free to browse my bookish amd not so bookish photos) I often do lives in english there. In fact instagram has a wonderful bookstagramming community, have met great people there. Perhaps you could try it and see how it goes!

      2. Oh I see! I don’t speak Greek, but I do think that is a great idea to do a podcast in the language, especially if there aren’t many existing podcasts about books. Yes as you can see I am a bookstagrammer as well! I haven’t been posting too much, but it is one of my goals to be more involved in the bookstagramming community. Glad that we are able to connect on instagram 🙂

      3. I am so glad we’ve also met on the instagram, I m happy your account is not books-only! Btw yiu can get a glimpse of my books and me in the first couple of vids on my YouTube channel (maybe I need to subtitle them!)

      4. Haha I find it hard to just do book-only posts since there are so many other things going on. I took a peek at your YouTube channel- very impressive bookshelf 🙂 if you want to reach a wider audience, maybe subtitling is a good idea! Although I can imagine that it would be a lot of work

  5. I tend to forget the details of books within a few weeks, so enjoy re-reading. This is great if I read crime fiction as I can never remember who did it and how it ends.
I also read extremely fast. About 100 pages per hour. It is pointless my taking books on holiday as enough to last me a week would weigh a ton. I bought the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo when I was on my way to the airport once, but had finished it by the time I reached my destination 6 hours later.
If I could read more slowly I might be able to remember the plot better!

    1. Hello!
I am glad that you can relate! My memory works in the same way in that I always forget major plot points. When people ask me what a book is about a while after I’ve read it, the most I can come up with is a one-liner! Yes, it makes reread a enjoyable, so I think it is a blessing in disguise 🙂
That is amazing that you can read so fast!! I don’t read nearly as quickly (about 1 page a minute depending on the book). I do hear from people who read slowly, but say that they remember every single detail of the book. So I think it might be true that reading speed correlates with retention 🙂

      1. One page a minute is still pretty fast Sophie! People keep suggesting I buy a Kindle for holidays but I don’t like reading books on screens.

      2. I would absolutely recommend a Kindle, especially if you go through books quickly and need to bring more than one book along for a trip! It is super light, takes no space at all, and can hold many, many books! (There is probably a limit but I haven’t found it yet haha 🙂 )
Initially I wasn’t used to reading from a screen as well, but it was something that I got used to quickly. What is great is that the ereader screen doesn’t have glare (not like a computer or phone screen) so it almost feels as if you are reading a book. You can also dim the screen or make it brighter depending on your preference!
