September 2017 Goals and TBR

Hello everyone!

Can you all believe that it is September already?! It’s already the 4th of the month and I am still in denial!

I am not a fan of cold weather (“Sophie, are you REALLY a Canadian?” *Sophie hides*), but there are aspects that I like about autumn: Like how it is a quieter season with fewer weddings and adulting demands, which means more time to do the things I lovelike reading, writing, and blogging!

The beginning of the month also means that it is now time to choose books for my monthly TBR, which is something that I am super duper excited for. It’s sorta like opening a box of chocolates and deciding which ones you get to eat 🙂

They Both Die at the End (by Adam Silvera) tells the story of Rufus and Mateo, two strangers who meet on the last day of their lives. I JUST finished History is All You Left Me, which kept me turning the pages from beginning to end. I absolutely fell in love with Adam Silvera’s writing, and I can’t wait to read this one.

Carry On (by Rainbow Rowell) is about the adventures of Simon Snow, who is apparently the Chosen One, in his last year at the Watford School of Magicks. I loved Fangirl, Landline, and Eleanor & Park. There hasn’t been a book of Rainbow Rowell’s that I didn’t love. Very excited 🙂

Looking for Alaska (by John Green) tells the story of Miles, a nerdy teenager, whose life changes forever when he meets the beautiful, unpredictable Alaska. I haven’t been consistently loving John Green’s books so far (never got through The Fault in Our Stars, though I did like Paper Towns), but I heard that this book is a good one. We’ll see how it goes 🙂

Wintergirls (by Laurie Halse Anderson) is about Lia’s struggle with anorexia. I absolutely loved Speak, which was so masterfully written, and I can’t wait to read another book by Laurie Halse Anderson.

One of my goals this month is to read more Adult contemporary fiction: (Since I am now, er, kind of sort of, *gulp* an Adult)

Tuesdays with Morrie (by Mitch Albom) tells the story of the author’s interactions with his mentor, Morrie, in the last years of his life. Mitch Albom was one of my favourite writers growing up, and this is one of his most famous books that I haven’t yet read.

In Two by Two (by Nicholas Sparks), Russell Green is living the perfect life with his wife, six-year-old daughter, and leads a successful career. One day, he loses his wife and his job, and struggles to raise his daughter as a single father. You know that horrifying moment when you realize a book sounds so much like the book that you are trying to write? That’s…. kind of what I feel about this one. Why I’m reading it is beyond me. LOL :’)

Here are my goals for the end of September:

  1. READ six books. As above 😉
  2. Finish WRITING that novel. Yes, the one that I’ve been working on for the past year. As much as I love my characters and they are like my literary babies, I am… kind of ready to be done with them (sorry Matt sorry Olivia), especially now that I have a Shiny New Idea fighting for brain space. LOL :’)
  3. BLOG three times a week. Also, I want to spiffy this blog up a bit: For example, finally create a reviews index!
  4. SLEEP seven hours a day. Unfortunately, sleep has been something I’ve been sacrificing in the past few months, but it’s so, so important. After all, I want to live to a hundred 😉

Now, I want to hear about YOU! What are your goals for September? What books are you planning to read?

  5. I am so glad that I am not the only one in denial! Summer lives on!
You seem to have a pretty neat plan for September, hope it goes well! I am too sloppy when it comes to my hobbies (guess it’s to offset having to be well organised for work and other adult responsibilities) so no great to-do lists or plans. I am currently reading “It can’t happen here” by Sinclair Lewis and I want to read some fantasy and history by the end of month. Also I have to finish the short draft of my setting so it’s ready to discuss it with people in October’s con. I am also going to watch The Expanse S.2 and hopefully I’ll make somecsolid progress in the videogame I am currently palying. And writing this I realise it’s already too much stuff for the free time available.

    1. Sometimes I feel stressed trying to accomplish too much in a short period of time. Maybe it is better to have a more disorganized approach to hobbies. They are meant to be enjoyed after all 🙂

It seems like you have quite a list of things to do this month as well. Happy reading and writing! Hope you enjoy your book, and that the convention goes well 🙂

  6. Such great goals Sophie! I would definitely read books that sound like yours… first it assures you that your book is unique… second it shows you’ve done your research to your potential editor and agent. It’s also a good way to find an agent and publisher sometimes. (I’ve done A LOT of reading for my own book!)

Reviews indexes are hard, lol… I thought long and hard before I decided on my format… (I just finished it last month!) I love Rainbow Rowell… it’s good to hear Landline is good and I loved Carry On so I hope you do too! ♥️ happy reading and blogging in September!

    1. Part of my reason is because I want to make sure that my own book is unique. And it is absolutely true that reading similar books is important when seeking out publishers! I am not there yet but I will hopefully get there one day 🙂 how is your writing project going? 🙂

Yes! I need to decide how to organize mine. That’s great that you finished yours! I’ll take a look! Glad that you enjoyed Carry On, definitely looking forward to it 🙂 hoping that you have a good reading and writing month too 🙂

      2. Yes it is! An author once said “I hate writing but I love having written.” Which kind of describes how I feel about writing haha 🙂

  7. I’ve read a couple books by Mitch Albom (assigned school reading), and I didn’t like any of them. I feel like the only person who doesn’t find him inspirational and uplifting and all that. 😦

    1. Mitch Albom does have a unique writing style and I get that it’s not for everyone. I think we all have different tastes in books 🙂 there are books that I love that others can’t stand and vice versa. Nothing wrong with having a different opinion! Thanks for sharing

      1. I actually thought The Five People You Meet in Heaven was depressing and kind of horrifying, and I really, really hope that heaven is actually nothing like it! :p

      2. Haha I see! It is a different take on how heaven is like. And yes, I can see why you think it is depressing. I do like that it ends on a thoughtful and uplifting note though 🙂 thanks for sharing your thoughts on this book!
