August Wrap-Up

Blog_monthlywrapup.png

Hello everyone,

WOW, where did August go!? Can you believe that summer is over!? *Cries*

giphy

The plus side: I am AMAZED by how much I accomplished this month: 35,000+ words on my manuscript, and I read/listened to seven books this month! (Not counting the book that I DNF’d, or the book that I am 90% done listening to as of today!) It’s a personal record that I am super, duper proud of 🙂

And psst……….. Did you guys notice the shiny new graphics?!

The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli (Audio) ★★★★/5

This is a heartwarming story about Molly who has had 26 crushes, but never actually dated. I love that this features a MC who is fat and takes medications for anxiety, and none of these traits had to be “fixed” by the end of the novel. I also love the amount of diversity in this book (lesbian parents, twin sister with a pansexual love interest, and YES, sperm donor babies)!!! Check out my review here.

When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandya Menon (Audio) ★★★/5

This was a super cute novel featuring who Indian characters, Dimple and Rishi, who have different takes on their traditional Indian upbringing. I love the diversity in this novel, but ohh… the cheese. Check out my review here.

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson (Print) ★★★★★/5

This book tells the story of a girl, Melinda, who loses her voice after being sexually abused by a high school senior. With time, we watch as her wounds heal and she rediscovers herself and her own voice. Despite the subject matter, Melinda has a witty and dry sense of humour that makes me laugh. I absolutely loved this book and would read it again in a heartbeat!

The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger (Print) ★★★★/5

Holden Caulfield is expelled for the fourth time from his school. Instead of going home to face his family, he spends four days wandering New York city. During this time, we read about Holden’s thoughts, memories and experiences, as if he is confessing to us as a friend. I love that this book leaves us with something to think about, but it is a depressing, depressing book that was difficult to get through at times.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom (Print) ★★★.5/5

An 83-year-old man named Eddie is the maintenance guy for an amusement park. One day, he saves a girl from a falling cart in exchange for his own life. On his way to heaven, he meets 5 people whose lives have intersected with his. I love how the author uses simple language to convey strong emotions, though I am not used to the use of the omnipresent narrator. (How do you guys feel about omnipresent narrators?!)

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman (Audio) ★★★★/5

After losing his wife, Ove becomes a bitter man who lives a solitary life. Things begin to change when a cheerful couple moves in next door, as Ove rediscovers the kindness in his heart and comes to terms with his loss. This is a heart-wrenching book about grief and about healing. Ove is a complex character, and throughout the book, we learn about his past and how they shaped who he is as a person. Love this book, but warning: It is a sloooow book.

Him by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy (Audio) 4/5 stars

Jamie and Ryan were best friends as children, but things got weird during their last night as roommates at hockey camp. Now, as adults, they are in two different cities and drift out of touch. One day, the two meet again, and they have a chance to rekindle their friendship and maybe even let it become something more. This is a sizzling LGBT romance that got me hooked since day one. Absolutely loved it!!

The House of God by Samuel Shem (Audio) DNF

This book tells the story of medical interns and their lives. I liked House and Grey’s Anatomy, so I thought that this would be in the same flavour. I hated it. It is the first book that I’ve DNF’d since I’ve started blogging. The writing isn’t bad, and usually I don’t mind sex scenes that are well-written, but this book contains some of the worst, most distasteful and disturbing sex scenes I have ever read.

  1. Oh I absolutely loved Speak! However I was only half way into it and had to leave it for some reason I don’t remember now. (This was like 3 years ago)
But I loved loved wintergirls so I think I should start reading this book again!

    1. Hi!! I haven’t read Wintergirls yet, but I love this author’s writing, and it’s been a while since I read about eating disorders, so it is definitely going on my tbr. I really do recommend reading Speak again, since I especially enjoyed the second half of the book. I did find that it was slow to begin, but absolutely worth it 🙂 hope you enjoy this book if you do decide to give it another chance!

  2. Aww! Thank you for the highlight, Sophie! I’m so happy you enjoyed that discussion topic! 😀 (Secret: I was kind of worried people would think I was crazy. Hahahaha!)

    1. Haha yes I loved that one! I feel like some of my favorite blog posts are ones that I am a bit scared to post 🙂 It is a good sign because it means that the topic is original and not over-done.

      1. Hahaha! Very true, but also a test for yourself. Blogging is about being honest and fear keeps us from being honest. 🙂 Reasons why I’m not afraid of scaring people away when I talk about hard topics. They need to be talked about and I don’t believe anything is taboo. :p

      2. I absolutely agree that it’s important to be an honest blogger 🙂 The posts that I love reading most are honest and unique. I agree that we shouldn’t think of anything as a taboo topic. Even if it is hard to write about, chances are other bloggers and readers are probably thinking the same things too 😉

      3. Very true. I also think that we, as book bloggers, have a responsibility to discuss the hard topics and offer them a voice and representation. Like my discussion from last week: violence in fiction. Yes, it’s a hard topic. No, I don’t have experience with violence personally, but those who have may not be comfortable talking about it. Even so, it still needs a voice. 🙂

      4. Definitely 🙂 we shouldn’t avoid topics just because they are hard to write about, and it’s interesting to hear other’s opinions on the topic as well.

  4. It was a productive August I can see! It’s great you’ve also progressed with your manuscript (I haven’t written down a word). I am a great fan of summer and I am sorry it is over but happy autumn! My August was focused on crime fiction but what with the heatwave and going out, it felt a bit slow. Got myself some much desired but expensive reference books so I’ll rely on my unread books for the months ahead.

    1. Yes it’s been a productive month for me, although I wished to have written more! My goal for next month is to finish my manuscript. Are you working on a writing project right now? What is it about? Happy reading and writing in September 🙂

      1. Thank you Sophie! I hope you achieve your writing goal this month! I am working on writing down my RPG setting (the world my stories take place in). Hopefully I’ll get some friends to playtest it!

      2. Thank you!! I think I may have 30-40,000 words left to go but hope I can make it!
I am not too familiar with RPGs, but I hope that you are able to meet your writing goals as well 🙂

    1. Thank you!! Hope you will like The Upside of Unrequited and Speak! I enjoyed both a lot even though they are very different books (Speak is much more serious, while Upside was a lighter and faster read.) Loved your post, because it made me think about why I choose the books that I do 🙂 Thanks for dropping by!

  10. 35,000+ words and 7 books! That is what I call a productive month. Some of the books you read have been on my tbr list for ages. Speak and Him are the two priority reads for me but I’m told When Dimple Met Rishi is a cute book as well. I just need more time to read everything haha.

    1. Thank you Lois! I get what you mean- it’s so hard to find time to read sometimes! There aren’t enough hours in the day haha… I thought Him was a super fast and addictive read (I finished the audiobook in two days haha). Speak was a heavier novel that took some time to digest. When Dimple Met Rishi was super cute but I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would, though a lot of other bloggers did like the book. Hope you enjoy these when you do get the time to read them 🙂
