100 Followers and The Versatile Blogger Award!

Happy Friday!

Do I REALLY have 100 followers? Like, really? (rubs eyes and refreshes page again, because part of me still thinks that I dreamed it all)

I am honestly SO happy and SO grateful to all of you who read my posts! I remember when I first started this blog with one sad, lonely follower (myself). And in the beginning, I honestly couldn’t believe that anyone would want to read what I have to write. I was ecstatic when I got my first like and my first comment and my first handful of followers.

And you know what? My heart still leaps when I get a new WP notification. I love each and every comment I get from you guys! And each new follower makes me smile! Really! From the bottom of my heart!

I am so grateful for all you wonderful peeps and fellow bloggers. It’s amazing to talk to people from all over the world who like the same stuff as I do. And I love discovering new books and new ideas through you guys. I find myself learning new things and pushing the boundaries of my imagination every day.

I have a greyhound (the dog, not the bus company) named Charles, like the Prince.

I am one of those people who have to check the stove and my alarm a gazillion times before I go to bed, because I am terrified that my apartment will burn down overnight and I won’t wake up in the morning.

I work with children who have cancer. Chemo and radiation are tough. But kids are so strong and resilient and brave, because they roll along with whatever life throws at them. They are amazing little humans.

My fiancé finished medical school this year and is starting his residency in pathology. It’s perfect for him, because he doesn’t like talking to people. He’d rather do autopsies.

My pole dancing friends call me fearless, because they see me trying things that could get myself seriously hurt. The truth is that I’m terrified each time, but I don’t let it stop me :’)

I secretly love spending time alone.

I was born in China and moved to Canada when I was 8 years old. On my passport, I am Canadian. But I am fiercely proud of being both. I love the stereotype that Canadians are nice, because it is so true. And did you know that the Chinese invented paper and printing? And gunpowder? Without China, we might not have books (or gun violence, for that matter.)

    Yay! Big ‘ole congrats on 100 followers Sophie! Haha – I’m the same way! I check that my alarm is set to 4:30 am and not pm every night like a gazillion times before going to bed to make sure I don’t get up lat for my morning hike.

      Wow 4:30am!! That’s super early! A morning hike sounds like a lovely way to start off the day 🙂 my alarm is usually set at 6:50am and I am always paranoid that it is am and not pm as well!!

    Wooooooo! First off, congrats! Second off, you totally deserve the award! I’m so excited for you! 😀 Third, thank you for the nomination! I have done this award before (just back in January, actually :p). I honestly can’t come up with any more fun facts about myself (I had a page of 43 fun facts from previous awards, but it had too many gifs so I took it down :p), so I may not do this one. But thank you so much for thinking of me! 😀

    Aww! Charlie is so cute! 😀 My dog is part whippet (smaller greyhound), so she has a similar body-shape and the oh-so-adorable ears that move all over the place when she hears things. Hee hee!

    Ah! I love being alone, too! some of my best times. Bahahahaha!

    I think that’s awesome that you’re of two different heritages! That’s really cool! Does your family still practice any Chinese practices? Like food/holidays/etc? (I love learning about new cultures! 😀 )

      That’s totally understandable that you’ve done this award before (I totally expected that you probably got nominated a few times) 🙂
      I’ve seen whippets before and they are super adorable! How’s she like? Charles is lazy and loves sleeping 🙂
      Glad that I’m not the only one who likes to be alone 🙂
      Yes we still celebrate Chinese New Year and everyone has a zodiac sign (I’m horse). Also, in China you are 1 year older than you are now (for example I’m 26 but my grandma would say I’m 27) which is one thing I’m not too excited about going back to china haha…

        Hee hee! Well, she’s part whippet. Part German Pointer. And I see a bit of both: she tries to point, but her tail is a bit curved on the end. She runs just like a whippet, but she doesn’t have a whole lot of stamina. (She’s also 9 now. So, she’s a bit older.) Still, she loves attention and is very much a sleeper. :p

        Ohh!! Chinese ages are like Korean ages! Because you believe you are 1 when you are born, yes? 😀
        I’ve always thought it’d be cool to experience traditional Chinese New Year. It seems like such a rich holiday. Are moonpies a thing? (Or am I mixing up cultures now? o.o)

        Aw she sounds super adorable! Charles is 8 now and he’s fast but doesn’t have much stamina either. They say that a sleepy dog is a good dog 🙂
        Haha yes! I think the logic is that you are 1 when you are born. We call it mooncake (but maybe there are people who call it moon pies…), and we celebrate it on a day in autumn when the moon is the fullest and brightest 🙂

        Hahaha! I’m okay with a sleepy dog. I don’t have the energy for an active dog anymore either. 😉

        Ohhh! Mooncakes! You fill them, yes? This sounds like a really cool holiday. What is it intended to celebrate exactly?

        Me? American culture. 😒 Suuuuuper boring. *sigh* I’d like to re-adopt holidays from my way-past heritage, but I haven’t taken the time to look into any of them. And my only resource would be the interwebs. 😛

        The mooncake is sweet on the outside and it has a salty egg yolk (cooked and preserved of course) on the inside. Not sure how they used to make it, but my family buys them premade 🙂 It is to celebrate the moon because back then people wanted to thank moon for a successful harvest 🙂

        Haha I think we always think that our own culture is boring because we are used to it. People in China are actually SUPER fascinated with western culture 🙂 there are quite a few Americans and Canadians who go to china and become talk show celebrities haha

        Ooo! I must now find a place to try a mooncake. Sounds yummy! 😀

        The holiday pastry concept reminds me of the Polish paczki (puen-tch-ki.) They are eaten only on Fat Tuesday right before the start of lent.

        Haha! That’s crazy! I don’t even know what I’d talk about if I became a talk show host. :p But like… I dunno. America doesn’t have any cool festivals or anything. All of our holidays (outside of july 4th/Thanksgiving) are celebrated elsewhere in the world, too. We don’t have any of our own holidays because of our melting pot heritage, (which actually ended up losing most of the cultural holidays from immigrants. *sigh*) And I’m like… 7th gen American or some craziness. So no one in my family even knows anything about our family’s heritage. :/ (I’m the only one who speaks one of our family’s original languages, too.)

        You should definitely try a mooncake if you have the chance! They are not for everyone but they are worth a try 🙂 they often sell them at Asian supermarkets during September/October (there are lots of them here in Ontario though I’m not sure if they have them where you are in the states!)

        I suppose that’s the thing with newer countries haha. I’m not sure if Canada is similar or different. There are many people from different cultures here who celebrate their own holidays. But there isn’t as much of a “Canadian” identity, other than polar bears and beavers and maple syrup and hockey haha… that’s cool that you speak one of your family’s original language 🙂 is that Polish?

        I haven’t tried the paczki yet! I will keep an eye out for that. I have heard about Fat Tuesday but I don’t know much about it haha… What is lent?

        We have an Oriental Mart nearby! (I enjoy buying lychee drink and insta-noodles. :p) I will make sure to look for Mooncakes in a few months! 😀

        Hahaha! Hockey and maple syrup are actually big in Michigan, too. :p Does that make me half-Canadian? 😉

        Nope. Not Polish. German, actually. (Though, my family is also many other heritages, as well. I’m working on those languages, too.)

        Oh!! Haha! Lent is a part of the Catholic religion. If I remember correctly, it’s for 40 days and 40 days (because Jesus was int he desert for that long or something). And so we give up X (food, hobby, etc) and there’s a bunch of other rules, too. But we splurge on the Tuesday before, known as Fat Tuesday, by eating paczki! (I’m not Catholic. So, I don’t fully understand all of this anymore, either. :/ I just like desserts! 😂)

        That’s cool that your family comes from many heritages. It seems like it will be hard to give up something for 40 days! Now Fat Tuesday makes sense 🙂 my family is Christian (I’m still deciding) and we don’t have anything like that, so it is definitely interesting to learn about 🙂

        YAS! Honorary Canadian! *gasp* Are we… friends now??? If so, I officially have more Canadian friends than American friends. 😂 *is totally waiting for you to say ‘no’*

        Ah. Yes. It’s part of Catholicism technically, but bits and pieces trickle into other Christian denominations. I… Was never very good at it when I was part of the faith. 😜

        Haha yes we can be friends! I am excited to have an American friend 🙂 so far I have a few American friends who had moved over from Canada haha (they are working for Facebook and some law firm!)

        It’s always interesting to learn about different cultures and religions 🙂 I can see how it would be tough to follow certain rules and practices of a religion… that’s partly why I am still undecided haha.

        Yes. I quite enjoy learning about different cultures and religions and often seek out any opportunity to do so. However, it’s also helped me to accept that I don’t agree with the faith I was raised with, nor with its backwards, hypocritical practices. And that is a choice everyone must make on their own. 🙂

        Sometimes it is hard to talk about culture and religion because some people feel uncomfortable or defensive. But I am with you in that I love to learn more about what people believe. It does help open my eyes to what is out there. That is great that you are able to make a choice that works for you 🙂

        I had a co-worker/friend who was Hindi and it was so awesome learning about her religion! It’s very unique. 🙂 I wish I’d gotten to learn more about Shintoish when I was in Japan, but it seems like most people don’t really practice the religion so much as visit the shrines out of tradition??

        I’ve been very fortunate in my short life. I had good school programs which allowed me to visit Europe multiple times and then I had money to fund my way to Japan. My bank account hated me, but I have fernweh. So, not traveling for extended periods of time is REALLY hard for me. And I’m about to spend 6 years in grad school. So… I thought the trip would be worth the pinched purse and… some days it is. Some days it’s not. 🙂

        That’s great that you had opportunities to travel abroad for school! I had the chance to visit Taiwan for an acupuncture course (which was super fun) and Switzerland for a global health project (I love Europe!) Travelling is expensive but worth it, I think 🙂 Definitely seems like a good idea to spend some time abroad before grad school… 6 years is a long time!

        I absolutely loved Taiwan! So much good food! And everything is super cheap!! Haha it is quite warm though but definitely worth the visit!

    Congrats, Sophie! And we’d love a Canadian trip too… we’ve looked into the scenic rail trips more than once but were held back by the expense.

    Charles is so cute! Is that a toy he’s sleeping with?
    I think people who go into the sort of field your fiancé is headed towards usually have the same type of antisocial personality hahaha There’s nothing wrong with that, though! We need all sorts of people for all sorts of jobs and while I wouldn’t be caught dead doing it myself (sorry, I couldn’t resist!) I admire everyone who does. I know people who hate desk jobs and love being outside, etc. To each their own.

      I’m glad that you found the China facts to be interesting! My (super patriotic) grandpa drilled them into my head when I was a kid 🙂
      Yes! Charles has a wide selection of toys. He also loves bones
      Haha I definitely agree that we need all types of people to do all types of jobs. I could never do what he does 🙂
