WIPpet Wednesday: Awkward Bear Moment

embarrassed-bearHappy Hump Day everyone!

WIPpet Wednesdays is a blog hop where writers can share a snippet from their WIP (Work in Progress). The only stipulation is that the excerpt is somehow related to the date.

Be sure to check out some of the other lovely WIPpet snippets here. Thank you Emily Witt for hosting.

My current project is a new-adult contemporary novella titled Together We Will Live Forever (tentative.) Olivia is a neuroscience grad student and an aspiring artist. Matt works at the art gallery and lives with his daughter, Zelda.

In this snippet, Olivia bumps into Matt at the art gallery:

Olivia’s cheeks turn a shade of crimson red, and she thinks she can very well camouflage with his shirt.

Her instinct is to pretend not to know him and walk away, very, very quickly, to the end of the hallway, because, well, it is possible that she is in dire need of a washroom, which he must be able understand, since he apparently works at the gallery.

But by then, she has already lingered there for so long, staring at him, that it is impossible to deny that she has seen him.

And, to add fuel to the flame, Matt has said. “Hey, aren’t you from my building?”

“Uh, yeah,” She replies. And then it all comes pouring out. “Uh. Sorry about a few days ago. I mean, Saturday. That was super embarrassing. It doesn’t happen with me all the time, you know? I mean, I don’t always get stuck on monkey bars.”

WIPpet Math: It is July 12 and I have 153 words. 1 + 5 + 3 = (2 + 7) x 1.

A quick Camp Nano update: I am at 22036 words out of 50000, which means that I am ahead of the game!

Also, this weekend I’m going to Hamilton, Ontario to do some research for my novel (I’m all for Real Life Research. You gotta get down in the trenches sometimes). By the way, did you know that Hamilton is The Waterfall Capital of the World. Nope, not of Ontario, not of Canada, but of THE WORLD. Who knew?! All you peeps, come to Hamilton 🙂

What are you working on this week? For the Camp Nano-ers out there: How is it going? Do you have a snippet?

    1. Haha thank you! It turned out that yesterday was a super busy day (and I caught the cold!) so now I am not as ahead lol…

  2. Yay for being ahead on Camp NaNo! That’s awesome!
I tend to be very socially awkward, so I can relate to her urge to get away at the beginning.

    1. Haha thank you! I am less ahead now (thanks to a busy day yesterday and a cold!) but I will catch up again 🙂
I am an awkward penguin as well so a lot of these awkward scenes find their way into my manuscript 🙂

  3. LOL! I’ve been stuck on monkey bars…I like to pretend it didn’t happen. 😀 (Love the snippet.) Well done on your CampNaNo progress. I am so far behind, I might just cheer everyone else on instead.

    1. Hello Debbie!
Haha I’m glad you like the snippet! It is an embarrassing moment for Olivia.
I think I may have cursed myself with that happy dance, because I got sick (promptly after that post) and now I might be falling behind again!
Anyway, I believe that it is quality over quantity. Writing down a few good quality chapters that we want to keep is better than finish an entire novel that will have to be rewritten!

  4. Congratulations on NaNo success! (I’ll pretend that I’m not really behind.)

LOL at being stuck on monkey bars. That’s the reason I never liked them!

    1. Thank you! Though I am falling behind as I speak… I’ll use catching the cold as my excuse 🙂
I hope that the weekend will be productive for both of us 🙂
Haha yes! Monkey bars bring back fond memories (not really)

  6. Congrats on the camp NANO. I never participate, because it’s so easy to fall behind and high-expectation deadlines and I don’t get along. They pass and I’m left behind sadly waving. Jealous about Hamilton… maybe one day, but I sincerely doubt it’ll come to my little piece of the world.

And I totally sympathize with Olivia’s social awkwardness. It’s so easy to trip over yourself at crucial moments.

    1. Thanks! I tend to do well when there is a deadline, but I totally get that not everyone feels the same way! Sometimes I feel that pushing to write x words might be counter-productive, and that it might be better to take things at our own pace 🙂

I love writing awkward scenes and awkward characters because they totally exist in real life! When people first meet, it’s not always smooth and I want to make that part realistic in my story 🙂

  7. I guess I’m not technically doing Nano, because I already had 15000 words, but anyway I’m working on the first draft of Lighter Places, a novel about a girl called Elaine who loves to do lights (like for theatre) but is uncertain about basically everything else. I’m excited because I”m planning to go to Thailand, where the book is set, in September.

    1. That’s awesome that you get to go to Thailand! Seems like you will be doing some research for your story as well! Did you decide that the story will take place in Thailand after you decided to go? Or did you decide to go to Thailand to research your story? In any case it seems like it will be a fun trip!

      1. The story was set in Thailand first, and factors just asking so I could go.

      2. Oh I see!!! Hope you enjoy the trip to Thailand and that you find some inspiration for your story there 🙂 that’s what I find happens when I do “real world” book research, I get ideas about what could have happened there! It is definitely a good experience 🙂

  8. Congrats on Camp! I’m around 2,000 words behind where I want to be, but I’ve still got time to catch up before the end of the week! Enjoy your real world research! 😀

2000 words is not much to be behind by!! You can do it!!! 🙂
I am less ahead than I was before (thanks to catching the cold and a busy week in general) but hoping to squeeeeze some writing in this weekend 🙂

Haha! Out of context, this is hilarious! I literally laughed out loud at the last line. Poor Olivia. Your characters do seem to keep mortifying themselves. 😉

    1. Glad you found it funny 🙂
Yes my characters do tend to find themselves in sticky situations 🙂
      Thanks for dropping by!
