WIPpet Wednesday: A Purple Heart

Happy Hump Day everyone!

WIPpet Wednesdays is a blog hop where writers can share a snippet from their WIP (Work in Progress). The only stipulation is that the excerpt is somehow related to the date.

Be sure to check out some of the other lovely WIPpet snippets here. Thank you Emily Witt for hosting.

My current project is a new-adult contemporary novella titled Together We Will Live Forever (tentative.) It tells the story of Olivia, a neuroscience grad student and an aspiring artist, and Matt, a man who works at the art gallery and lives with his daughter, Zelda.

Even though today is June 28, this is a snippet about May 13, Mother’s Day. (WIPpet Math: 5 x 3 + 1 = 6 + 2 + 8.)

“Now, remember to write a message to your mommies. It is her special day this Sunday,” Mrs. Patterson says.

Zelda pushes her chair back. It screeches as she gets onto her feet. She joins her classmates at the end of the line. She rocks back and forth on her feet, her eyes glazing over as the other kids rushed back to their seats with pieces of paper and pom poms, Mrs. Patterson crying out, “don’t run with scissors!”

She is the last to pick up her piece of construction paper. She deliberates over the colours, then decides on purple. She takes a tube of glitter and a blue marker.

She settles back into her seat.

The other kids around the table fight for pom poms, spilling glitter over their arms and clothes. Red and pink pom poms sail into the air.

Zelda works quietly on her heart. She draws a half-heart, then erases it, then draws it again, until she draws the best half-heart she can. Holding the folded edge with one hand, she cuts away the part of the paper that is not the half-heart. She unfolds the piece of paper. It is perfect, which makes her smile.

In the middle of the purple heart, Zelda writes:

“I love you, Daddy.”

What are you working on this week? Do you have a snippet to share?

Cheers,

Sophie

      1. I just felt like it was kinda choppy and could flow better with slightly different word choice and maybe more conjunctions? xD

      2. After reading it again, I can see what you mean. I’ll smooth things over during the edit. Thanks 🙂
