Happy Hump Day everyone!
WIPpet Wednesdays is a blog hop where writers can share a snippet from their WIP (Work in Progress). The only stipulation is that the excerpt is somehow related to the date. Today is June 21. 6 + 21 = 27 sentences.
Be sure to check out some of the other lovely WIPpet snippets here. Thank you Emily Witt for hosting.
My current project is a new-adult contemporary novella titled Together We Will Live Forever (tentative.) It tells the story of Olivia, a neuroscience grad student and an aspiring artist, and Matt, a single father who works at an art gallery. This snippet features Olivia and her dog Charlie:
Olivia sits on her couch. The room is dark, the blue flicker of her TV screen on her face. She hugs a bucket on her lap, cold against her skin, and she stuffs a scoop of ice cream in her mouth.
“All the times that I did his Calculus assignments.” She says. She takes the spoon out of her mouth and points it at Charlie. “You would think, teach a man to fish, right?”
Charlie flops onto his side on the bed, then opens his canine mouth wide, panting.
“Well,” Olivia continues. “Not so. At some point you realize that it’s easier to give him fish every single day.”
She puts another spoonful into her mouth, then winces. Brain freeze.
“All his Calculus assignments.” She mutters. “Every damn one. And at the end of the course, he thinks that a derivative is a square root. A square root. Can you believe that?”
Charlie’s tongue lolls from the side of his mouth and he pants some more.
“No wonder he failed grade 3 math.” She groans. “How can someone fail grade 3 math?”
She digs the spoon back into the bucket.
“Whoever said that Asians are good at math should stop saying it. If I had known, I would never have sat beside him in Calculus class, and I would never have…”
Her voice cracks.
“… Never have…”
She breaks into sobs.
Interested in more snippets? Here is one about Matt, and here is another about Charlie.
What are you working on this week? Do you have a snippet to share?
Cheers,
Sophie
