WIPpet Wednesday: Human Fear

Hello Hump Day everyone!

WIPpet Wednesdays is a blog hop where writers can share a snippet from their WIP (Work in Progress). The only stipulation is that the excerpt is somehow related to the date. In this case, I am posting 6 paragraphs from chapter 14 (for June 14th)

Be sure to check out some of the other lovely WIPpet snippets here. Thank you Emily Witt for hosting.

My current project is a new-adult contemporary novella titled Together We Will Live Forever (tentative.) It tells the story of Olivia, a neuroscience grad student and an aspiring artist, and Matt, a single father who works at an art gallery. This scene takes place in a park:

Olivia’s mouth curled up into an amused smile. “Don’t tell me, you’re scared of dogs?”

Matt felt warmth rush to his face. Charlie wasn’t just a dog. He was a huge dog with veiny legs that reminded him of spiders. He shuttered. “No,” he grumbled.

Olivia made a sound, something between a snort and a laugh. “Look at him. He’s so hungry that he would eat anything. And you know what he enjoys feeding on the most?”

He swallowed. “What?”

“Human fear.”

Matt’s eyes widened. He glanced at the dog, who plucked mouthfuls of grass from the earth, tearing them apart with his teeth, swishing them around in his jaw until they were nothing but mush, before swallowing the clump whole, then repeating the process. Matt’s armpits were wet, his mouth dry.

What are you working on right now? I’d love to read an excerpt of your WIP!

Cheers,

  1. Oh wow that was a great excerpt! I’m really intrigued now, that dog literally sounds like a self-aware monster – no joke hahaha. I’m guessing it’s just a normal dog right?

I thought I’d share an excerpt from my current WIP – Page 14 (my chapter 14 is still a work in progress!!)

Turning to head for the bathroom, Nancy froze and held her breath. A sweet, clear voice was singing, the sound rising and diving in perfect lyrical dreaminess. The noise was coming from somewhere close by outside. It could only be Tiggy, who was probably already by the pool, no doubt lying in the sun to build up her golden summer tan. Her singing voice was beautiful, her high, clear soprano resonating with a gentle, enchanting lull that pulled Nancy to the poolside door. She snuck a look through the side window, spying Tiggy standing by the edge of the pool, singing to the swaying trees surrounding the house. Her voice rose and fell, the sweet words engulfing Nancy’s body and sending shivers of pleasure down her spine.

    1. Yes, Charlie is just a regular ol’ dog 🙂
I love that excerpt! I am guessing that this is a f/f romance? I am curious about what happens next in the scene!

      1. Haha thought he was! I absolutely love that you thought it’s a f/f romance – makes a lot of sense as it’s actually about this girl who is unhealthy obsessed with another – and it ends in death for one of them! ☺

  4. I love the description of the dog’s legs and Matt’s reactions. I have to admit, I’ve always been a bit nervous around dogs myself, until having one.

    1. I am glad that the description worked 🙂 How can we not love our dogs? (Mine is very much like Charlie!) Thanks for dropping by 🙂

  5. Wow. There was a bit of a Kujo (as in scary dog) element when describing Matt’s reactions to the dog. I love it!

I also like the premise of your novella. I am interested in reading more.

    1. Thank you! I haven’t worked up the courage to read Cujo yet (the thought gives me the bejeebies…)
